Has anyone else noticed that more and more people are talking about the end of the world coming soon? It seems like every day I am hearing more and more people talkng about having to go to christ to have him save them. Its not only the usually crazies on the train or street corner preaching conversion, but regular looking people having conversations over their cell phones. I understand why some people may have the need to have a god in their lives, but is it the same in other places? Has the political/economic situation fostered/forced the comfort of religion to people as an acceptable escape pod from reality?

If Bush isn't a harbinger of the end times, then I don't know what is

I'm in the D.C. metro area, which plenty full of crazies, but I can't honestly say that I've heard talk of the end times, except that my buddy told me a few months back that the Mayan calendar is actually set to run out in 2009 or sometime around then, and so people are thinking that is when the world is going to end.

Otherwise, nothing. I'll have to keep an ear open.

You listening in on peoples cell phone conversations again?

People have been preaching about the end of times, for thousands of years at least. And you know what, they are all right. Their time will end. Unfortunately, many of them are too busy worrying about it, instead of living in the moment.

Fuck’m.

Hello Morgan…

No more so than in “82” when the planets were supposed to align and the world would end…

One could say that reality has a way of pushing the weak to the comforts of a god to guide them and take blame for the things that just are… Is this not the whole basis for religion? Having the easy answer to all the toughest questions? Effectively nothing more than a safety blanket…

Here in CT I do not seem to hear much one way or the other but I am sure, as with anything if I was to start looking for it I would find it…

Reminds me of 10 years ago in 97 me and a friend were crossing a street in the city there and this guy with a microphone and small amp was corner preaching… As me and my friend approached him he looks at me and starts on the demons walk among us… It was worth a chuckle then and now…

Peace

Hi,

Draculesti, yes, I think Bush is doing his part to bring about the end of the world after all he think god talks to him. I believe the Mayan calander ends in 2012.

Asmedious, yes, I get bored easily, and I listen to what people say on the street into their phones when I walk by.

"Unfortunately, many of them are too busy worrying about it, instead of living in the moment."

This is very true, if they come to think about their life in the moment, they might realize that their life is meaningless, empty, and full of regret. (IMO)

ta2zz, hmm, last time the world was supposed to end I was in a bar with friends. 82,97, and 2000. It ends everyday for someone.

"Is this not the whole basis for religion? Having the easy answer to all the toughest questions? Effectively nothing more than a safety blanket."

Yes, and lots of people want to cuddle up in it.
True enough, if you look for something or just be more aware of it, it has a habit of popping out into your face.

I guess it was more of the hiphop/slutty looking chick outside the train station near my house talking to her boyfriend on her cell phone about how the world was ending, that christ needed to save him, and that he couldn't save her for the stuff she did. It was just kinda surreal and bizarre all at once. Kinda like the icing on the freaky christ cake.

Truth, simple and plain.
The world ends every day for someone, somewhere. It's called dying.

This is exactly like people who claim life flashes before your eyes at death/near death experiences. And you know, it's true, your life does flash before your eyes before you die.
As far as I know, that process is called "living".

Again, I am reminded of one of the MANY reasons I left NYC...

NY reminds me of a novelty store - lot's of neat stuff but nothing I really need.

Here in Baltimore, most people talk about Raven's football. The end of the world comes at the end of the season.

It probably doesn't help that ours has been a millennial generation. I'm sure you remember all of the doomsday scenarios that were ubiquitous at the turn of the century. Even though there were no major catastrophes, people (probably due to "commitment and consistency") are still expecting some sort of impending cataclysm. It's become somewhat of a common mindset...This sense that something final is imminent.

I read these posts and have to laugh to myself. I love to think that the conclusions that I myself have drawn regarding life and death are completely original. I was all ready to proclaim that the world ends in death. In reading however I've been beaten to it.
I, like most people, am extremely arrogant regarding my own place in history and the world. I really think it is this part of ourselves which contributes to the atraction of being the last generation on the planet. Given most peoples accepted view of times linearity and the idea that there was a world before and there will be one after we die; it is hard to accept on a subconscious level that we will be a laughing stock for future generations. It hurts us to realize that our entire existance could (and I believe is) completely irrelevant.
If we are the last civilization we get to be the ones Jesus returns to. When Armageddon comes we can be the ones standing with God to smite the evil beast. In our society where so many people lead utterly meaningless lives it gives us something to look forward to.
I'm kind of bummed. While these super-fabulous heros are fighting Satan at Armageddon I'll be either playing with my motorcycle, dancing with some hot chick at a dance club, blowing my money at the strip club, jacking off to porn, or posting stupidity on random message boards. As much as I can try do deny it, that's probably what Jesus will find me doing when he returns. Oh well; since he is my all loving all forgiving father figure he should understand right?

Personally I think the whole "end of the world" talk is just a bunch of hysterical heresay. It gives the bored and the myopic something else to talk about. Also, if that same 'scenario' is in the minds of the masses, it will make them think of God, etc. as an after effect of the aforementioned. So by proxy they (the weak) are actually steared into the direction of the church doors to be accepted by people unctuously preaching about salvation because "the time is near". The churches get more followers (more money) and they are kept in line by the fear of 'the end of the world' and 'God's judgement day'. It's really clever marketing now that I think about it.

Nostradamus also predicted the end of the world at 2012 and many current events, I don't know how many of you know much about him but things like the 9/11 attacks. The mayans did not necessarily say the apocalypse would happen in 2012 but that a superior being would be on earth. Who knows the election is set for 2008 and maybe the next president is the Anti-Christ. I highly doubt any of it but just a theory.

That's odd, I heard that he predicted 1999 as the end of the world.

Perhaps this is but one interpretation of his work, though.

That‘s fine with me Morg. The end of the world is the favorite topic of propagandists and weaklings in their pursuit of power and attention. They like to victimize their existence because that makes their Goodguy badge shine even more. The Satanist knows how the matter stands and fires away creatively. \m/
