I am currently doing a research on Satanism and music. I will appreciate if you can give me a list of bands that had composed music about Satan/Lucifer. I will like a list of songs that are in some way related to Satanism. Thanks for your help.

You sir, are an idiot. Please to be explaining how this song is about satan? It's about teenage angst and depression on the surface. Read a little deeper and I think you see it is about an addiction. To make this a little easier, here are the lyrics......
I want to fly into your sun Need faith to make me numb Live like a teenage christ Im a saint, got a date with suicide
Oh Mary, Mary To be this young is oh so scary Mary, Mary To be this young im oh so scared I wanna live, I wanna love But its a long hard road, out of hell I wanna live, I wanna love But its a long hard road, out of hell
You never said forever, could ever hurt like this You never said forever, could ever hurt like this
Spin my way out of hell, theres nothing left this soul to sell
Live fast and die fast too How many times to do this for you? How many times to do this for you?
Mary, Mary To be this young im oh so scared I wanna live, I wanna love But its a long hard road, out of hell I wanna live, I wanna love But its a long hard road, out of hell
You never said forever, could ever hurt like this You never said forever, could ever hurt like this
I wanna live, I wanna love But its a long hard road, out of hell
Long hard road, out of hell
I wanna live, I wanna love But its a long hard road, out of hell
Sell my soul for anything, anything but you Sell my soul for anything, anything but you
Hold on, phone call. What? The village is calling, they are missing their idiot.

There are a lot of "RRRRRRRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAWWWR!!! SATAAAN WILL RIIIIISE!!!! SPILL THE BLOOD OF THE CHRISTIANS!!!! RAAAWWR!" (LOL I liked that Zebu). My favorite is Slayer.
I came accross these Lyrics a few days ago and it "vibrated " in me :
This world does not want me This world does not care And I'm a product of this world Confused. I'd say that's fair This pain will never leave me It's scarred upon my brain Destroying everything that brought this Just to keep me, just to keep me sane
A hatred burns inside me Emotions out of hard But I've the will to focus this Survive, contrive, command From pain comes a courage The strength from injustice The rage to overcome it all An open mind With a closed fist

I'm going to correct myself:
Reading the lyrics I don't think that Tori Amos' Father Lucifer is about Satan...
Father Lucifer, you never looked so sane You always did prefer the drizzle to the rain Tell me that you're still in love with that milkmaid How's the Lizzies How's your Jesus Christ been hanging
Nothing's gonna stop me from floating Nothing's gonna stop me from floating
He says he reckons I'm a watercolour stain He says I run and then I run from him And then I run He didn't see me watching from the aeroplane He wiped a tear and then he threw away our appleseed
Nothing's gonna stop me from floating Nothing's gonna stop me from floating
Every day's my wedding day Though baby's still in his comatose state I'll die my own Easter eggs Don't go yet And Beenie lost the sunset but that's OK Does Joe bring flowers to Marilyn's grave And girls that eat pizza and never gain weight
Father Lucifer you never looked so sane You always did prefer to the drizzle to the rain Tell me that you're still in love with that milkmaid How's the Lizzies How's your Jesus Christ been hanging
For those in the mood to laugh at paranoia and general Christian hysteria, I found a excerpt of an "expose" on the "Satanism of pop music": Hell's Bell's II

I find this song and the lyrics charming in a way:
Cake: Satan is My Motor
Ive got wheels of polished steel Ive got tires that grab the road Ive got seats that selflessly hold my friends And a trunk that can carry the heaviest of loads
Ive got a mind that can steer me to your house And a heart that can bring you red flowers My intentions are good and earnest and true But under my hood is internal combustion Satan is my motor Hear my motor purr Satan is my motor Hear my motor purr Satan is the only one who seems to understand Satan is my motor
Ive got brakes I'm wide awake I can stop this car at any time At the very last second I can change directions Turn completely around if I feel so inclined
Ive got a mind that can steer me to your house And a heart that can bring you red flowers My intentions are good and earnest and true But under my hood is internal combustion
Satan is my motor Hear my motor purr Satan is my motor Hear my motor purr Satan is the only one who seems to understand Satan is my motor Satan is the only one who seems to understand

There are countless songs about Satan/Lucifer in black metal, and most of them are just "RRRRRRRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAWWWR!!! SATAAAN WILL RIIIIISE!!!! SPILL THE BLOOD OF THE CHRISTIANS!!!! RAAAWWR!"
Although as far as actual Satanic philosophy goes beyond the typical "Hail Satan!" stuff, two songs by an industrial band called X-Fusion have caught my attention, called "C'mon Devil", and "Bringer of Light"
Okay, I have to ask, seriously, what kind of black metal have you been listening to? Maybe you have encountered some more retarded bands as well as people claiming to like this type of music? You are NOT describing the black metal I know and love. Have you heard "most" black metal songs? I doubt it. Actually I was surprised as well. Most of their early songs were "skullfuck the Christians!" and "DEMONS ARE TEH AWESOMEM!!!!",
Firstly, Dimmu's first two albums were ENTIRELY in their native Norwegian, so unless you can read/speak Norwegian, it is unlikely you know what you are talking about. Also bear in mind that when their first album, "For All Tid" came out, the average age in the band was 16. Expecting a bit too much maturity out of these boys, methinks. Secondly, when they did finally convert to English on their third album, the lyrics weren't terrible. Yes, they did have one song titled "Tormentor of Christian Souls", the lyrics for which you must visit their website since the label declined to print them in the booklet. And yes, Satan is mentioned a number of times in their lyrics, but bear also in mind that, much like many other songs by many other artists, they make frequent use of metaphor.
Take the time to actually listen to and read the lyrics of some of these bands. You might be surprised to find that these guys are not simpleton fakers who have no idea what they are talking about; on the contrary many of these guys have been around the block, and full well understand what it is to be Satanic.
I would like to point you in the direction of some bands that AREN'T completely idiotic that may just change your stereotypical view.
The first one on my list: Emperor These guys are/were amazing, and their lyrics (especially in the early songs) are quite metaphorical, but they eventually matured in their Satanic philosophy. Their swansong studio album "Prometheus: The Discipline of Fire and Demise" was an exploration of the parallelisms that can be drawn from the archetypes of Lucifer and Prometheus. I will chose, however, to include my favorite song, from their second album "Anthems to the Welkin At Dusk"
With Strength I Burn Deep Green Dark Chaos. Blinded I run down these paths. By heart I know them. They lead to the searing cliffs. Stout they stand above the water's edge. Lifeless. And this is my foundation. Cold stone. Formed only by winds and time. How invulnerable. Lifeless. Ahh... I have longed to be at one with this. Yet, the waters call my name. For once I wish to see the entity behind the voice. The face of this seduction, the beauty of my pain. Am I blessed or am I cursed by thy presence... What is my crime... What is my deed... Is this life my redemption. Shall I repent or proceed? I hate my flesh. Its dimension poisoned my soul with doubt. It made me question the essence of... The <<I>> Slaves are those of this world given freedom to lay chains upon The Master. The wolf is no longer free. Release the chains and come for me. The Elder: <<Suddenly, his mournful cries were stunned. Out of the cold mist came three enthralling ships. Sails torn by many a storm, and the bows adorned by the most fierce gargoyles he'd ever laid eyes upon.Yet, the crew they bore... Three times twelve in number. They stood motionless, wrapped in grey, worn gowns. And from behind their shadowed faces the seductive chanting. Bidding him on board. Without hesitation, he accepted. And away they sailed...>> Upon these seas. Wherein I drowned so many times. I scatter the ashes of destiny. Still my flames are in hunger With fire in my heart. Shall I greet the shores ahead. Though, I know not what will burn Desire... Ahh... In the distance, I hear the waves wash over solid ground. And in this moment I am struck blind Grant me sight so I can see. That which lies ahead of me. Cursed be my mortal eyes. For dying in the realm of death Hear my call... I return to the soaring cliffs, they truly shine of strength. Even though, I nothing learned. With strength I burn...
Next is IHSAHN (Vegard Tveitan), former vocalist/guitarist of Emperor. His latest solo album Angl is excellent, though many may hesitate to call it black metal. Still, of a decidedly Satanic nature.
Monolith It was never the icy winds of the heights but the coldness of the world that hardened my foundation
whether your approach is that of praise or blasphemy the construction of my being will remain the same
if my soaring presence threatens to break your neck then so be it you shall dread my name
there is a fundamental cleft between your world and mine one of divine origin
were you to witness the nakedness of your own soul it would still appear a tower of Babel
is it such a crime to go apart and be alone? your holy simplicity turns gold into stone
Darkthrone Darkthrone has been in the scene since the late 80s. Their music, of late, has taken on a strong punk influence (good punk).
SHUT UP
Shut up, shut up! I'll stick to my guns, now you stick to yours Sit down! Let's not pretend that I have to use force Are you Satan? I don't think so! You copy my style, and you call yourself a man
You want a piece of me? Yeah, you do Begging for this and asking for that Shut up, fucking twat!
Never could fathom my hate Unable to take a hint Who am I? You haven't got a clue Satanism is lost on you
Not very profound, I know, but it has become one of my favorite songs ever.
These are just a few examples, all from the Norwegian scene. You can trust the quality of the Norwegian scene, for the most part. Probably the most immature and worthless of all is Burzum. It is a one-man band, Varg Vikernes at the helm; he is a media whore, and gives the rest of the scene a bad name. He went to jail for fatally stabbing Řystein Aarseth (Euronymous, guitarist of Mayhem). The guy is 100% sensationalism, 0% substance.
A few other band suggestions:
Gorgoroth: draw much of their lyrical inspiration from Nietzschean philosophy; one of their albums is titled "Twilight of the Idols". The have recently undergone some legal battles, and have since taken down their myspace page.
Immortal: while they are certainly Satanic, they prefer to draw inspiration from the northern wintry landscapes they inhabit; winter is a VERY big theme in their lyrics.
Impaled Nazarene: these guys are Satanic, and similar to Darkthrone in that they are heavily influenced by punk. They have some "funny" song titles like "Angel Rectums Do Bleed"; take a guess what the song is about...However, songs such as "Zero Tolerance" will leave you with little doubt as to where they stand.
Anyway, I know I was long-winded here. I don't believe that I will really change any opinions and, to be honest, I really don't care. I'm more concerned with setting straight the uninformed. I love this music and will take to task anyone who makes such a generalized statement without the goods to back it up. Are there "black metal" bands that are all about the sensationalism? You bet there are. Are they the norm? I don't really think so. Are they taken seriously? Only by adolescents who don't know any better. However, just like this lovely forum here, the good will rise above the bad (and crush it underfoot ).

I agree, Dissection is a great band. Reinkaos is good, but their most classic album is "Storm of the Light's Bane"; the songwriting on this album is unparalleled in any of their other work (of course, this is my opinion, but ask almost any fan, and they will say the same).
It should be noted that Dissection is of a more theistic orientation. The band leader, Jon Nodtveidt, killed himself several years ago in a sort of "Satanic" ritual. He belonged to the Misanthropic Luciferian Order (MLO) which has since been renamed the Temple of the Black Light.
Nevertheless, the music is great and I would strongly encourage those who enjoy underground metal to check them out if they are unfamiliar with them.

I'd say that "Black Sabbath" by Black Sabbath is a rather Satanic song, if not necessarily in the philosophical or religious sense. Not only is it written about Geezer Butler waking up to a black, menacing apparition after reading through an occult book given to him by Ozzy, but the music of the song is based on the tritone, which is also known as "Diabolus in Musica", or The Devil in Music.
I'd say that the aesthetic is very Satanic, even if the theme and the lyrics are only debatably Satanic in nature.

Like I stated in another post, I am envolved in a Satanic "black metal" project. The following are the lyrics to one of our songs:
Excidium Music and lyrics by Lord Drakon (my stage name)
Languishing forever deep in Heavenly despair, Angels sigh, weaping for the loss of the heir. Satan ArchDaimon, Lord of all he surveys, Rules a throne now black once gold on this the end of days.
Impaled upon his cross defiled, cursed priest of lies, Crimson tears, the blood of sorrow dripping from his eyes. King of the subservient race, fallen Nazarene son, Thy father hath forsaken thee, the day of the trinity is done.
Dark Lord who art in Hell Hallowed be thy Name, Thy Kingdom is come, thy Will is done On Earth as it is in Hell.
Set aflame the churches of Christ, they defile and plague the Earth, Receive thou liege of Lucifer the Flame of Satanic re-birth. No more lies shall vomit forth from reviled Christian tongue, Children of Hell arise and hail the birth of Satan's Son!
Everlasting Darkness now descends upon the land, Legions of Evil gather under the aegis of the Pentagram. Satan ArchDaimon, Lord of all he surveys, Rules a throne now black once gold on this the end of days.
Dark Lord who art in Hell Hallowed be thy Name, Thy Kingdom is come, thy Will is done On Earth as it is in Hell.
Before the Black Altar of Darkness we stand, On the night of our Infernal Kingdom's come. So let it be written in blood, So let it be done!

"lucifer in starlight" (by george meredith) has been set to music by two composers, bantock and radcliffe.
henley's "invictus," which is undeniably satanic, has been set by many many people.
iago's "credo" from verdi's otello, nick shadow's "i burn, i freeze" from stravinsky's rake's progress, and "son lo spirito" from boito's mefistofele are all fabulous operatic monologues from satan's point of view.
and if the devil be a woman- lady macbeth's aria "o vluttŕ del soglio" from verdi's macbeth!

If you're not opposed to the "RRRRAAAWWWRRR", try:
Dechristianize - Vital Remains
Vital Remains....nuf said. There whole album "Dechristianize" is the staple of American Death/Black Metal. They are one of the only Death/Black Metal bands that are 100% behind there lyrics in thought of mind. Known them for a while. Very talented, fast, brutal and too the point.

I got Coven's recording of a Black Mass which was pretty good.
Anyways, Jerry Goldsmith's 'Ave Satani' form the Omen. Gregorian did a cover of that too that used guitars and drums etc. which I prefer. Religious chant turned satanic.
Also LaVey's Hymn of the Satanic Empire, redone also by Schizoid (hard to make out words through the horrid voice though)
I really dont like Satanism in metal CoS its brings Satanism to a diabolical extreme and puts Satanists in a bad light. Not to mention all the shit alot of bands do in their often Theistic Satanism and then the non-theistic look like theistic anyways and basically the whole thing spins Satanism in a bad way. I just wish more effort was made into more traditional music made satanic and chant is a good one.

Thanks for turning me on to BLACK MASS by Lucifer. I'll have to add that to my music collection and maybe even play parts of it sometime on Dark Ryde. Thanks for turning me on to Dark Ryde.
I checked my list of things I have in storage and found that I have THE ELECTRIC LUCIFER, although I don't ever remember owning it. Haack also did a followup EL2, which was not released at the time ... only after his death in 1988. Just as frisky & fun; here's "Mean Old Devil" from it, and you get to see Haack visiting with, of all people, Mr. Rogers. [Wouldn't that have caused a scandal back in the "Satanic Panic" '80s?]
One other ritual type album that was out there at that time that I also have is WITCHCRAFT by Coven (they did One Tin Soldier... a silly antiwar pop song), which features a "Black Mass" and songs like THE WHITE WITCH OF ROSE HALL, and DIGNITARIES OF HELL. Apparently now OOP, although copies are still available. I never picked it up, probably just because the cover art looked too Raymond Buckland, but the Amazon reviews seem quite positive in a Jefferson Airplane way.
Speaking of which: I don't think that Anton ever got a memorial service from Densley & Co.; but if it had been up to me, I'd have held it atop Land's End, scattered his ashes over the cliff & into the waves, and played this.

Apart from the classic "Black Sabbath" , I also like very much "The Foetus of a New Day Kicking" , by Cradle of Filth. I would also not neglect mentioning "Venom". Personally I like "Buried Alive", but I also like very much "In League with Satan", "Welcome to Hell" and "One Thousand Days in Sodom".

Sleepytime Gorilla Museum's Hymn to the Morning Star is, in my humble opinion, one of the greatest recordings to ever meet my ears. In that creepy plucked violin and fretless bass-

Not really holding any message or meaning but more embracing the theme for the drama of a hymn to Lucifer. The only time SGM ever really dealt with this subject matter. This particular album was all about various anti-human beliefs. The band is based on a fictional anti humanist mathematician named John Cage and a fictional museum (they speak as if this is all historical fact) that was burned down on the day of its opening.

Madonna - The Beast Within
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rX73a4HzFPU
Blessed is he who reads aloud the words of the prophecy And blessed are those who hear And who keep what is written therein For the time is near
[from Revelation 1:7] He is coming with the clouds And every eye will see him Everyone who pierced him And all the tribes of the earth will wail on account of him
[from Revelation 2:1-4] Those of you who have not learned what some call the deep things of Satan I know your works, I know your toil, and your patient endurance And how you cannot hear evil men But have tested those who call themselves apostles, but are not And found them to be false I know that you are enduring patiently and bearing out for my namesake And you have not grown weary But I have this against you That you have abandoned the love you had
[from Revelation 2:9-10] I know your tribulation and your poverty And the slander of those who say that they are Jews, but they are not They are a synagogue of Satan Do not fear what you are about to suffer Behold the devil is about to throw you into prison
Wanting, needing, waiting for you to justify my love Hoping, praying for you to justify my love
[from Revelation 13:1-10] And I saw a beast rising out of the sea with ten horns and seven heads And a blasphemous name upon its head And the beast that I saw was like a leopard Its feet were like a bear's And its mouth was like a lion's mouth And to it the dragon gave his power, and his throne, and great authority One of his heads had a mortal wound But it seemed to have a mortal wound that was healed And the whole earth followed the beast with wonder
Men worshipped the dragon for he had given his authority to the beast And they worshipped the beast saying "Who is like the beast and who can fight against the beast?" And the beast was given a mouth uttering haughty and blasphemous words And it was allowed to exercise authority for forty-two months It opened its mouth to utter blasphemous words against God
It was allowed to make war on the saints and to conquer And authority was given it over every tribe And a people and tongue and nation And all who dwell on earth could worship it in vain If anyone has an ear let him hear If anyone is to be taken captive, into captivity he will go If anyone who slays with the sword, with the sword
Wanting, needing, waiting for you to justify my love Hoping
[from Revelation 21:1-8] Then, I saw a new heaven and a new earth And I heard a great voice from the throne saying: "Behold the dwelling of God is with men He will dwell with them, and they shall be his people And God himself will be with them He will wipe away every tear from their eyes And death shall be no more Neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore For these things will have passed away
To the thirsty I will give water without price From the fountain of the water of life He who conquers shall have this heritage And I will be his God and he shall be my son
But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the polluted As for the murderers, fornicators, sorcerers, idolators, and all liars Their lot shall be in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone."
[from Revelation 22:10-13] And he said to me, he said to me: "Do not seal up the words of the prophecy, for the time is near Let the evildoers still do evil, and the filthy still be filthy And the righteous still do right, and the holy still be holy Behold, I am coming soon I am the alpha and the omega The first and the last The beginning and the end."
Amen
What are you gonna do?

Most of the material from these three bands is going to be Satanically themed: Electric Hellfire Club Tiamat Samael As for Tiamat, I will be the first to admit that their earlier work (early 90's) was indeed the "RAAWWWWWR!!!! HAIL SATAN!!!! I LOVE THE DEVIL!!!!!" loud and angry junk. But they underwent a pleasant transformation in the late 90's when Johan Edlund learned to sing instead of howling. And thank goodness he did! He has a deep, rich baritone voice, much like the late Peter Steele. It would have been pitifully wasted growling throughout his music. The lyrics also got a bit more refined as the singing did. Note that, in addition to concrete "Satanic" references, there will also be references to Thelema and Sumerian mythology in Tiamat.
One of my favorite cover tunes is from Tiamat doing The Stones, Sympathy for the Devil.

I have to second that, Master Magick. Everyone and their fetus has done a cover of "Sympathy for the Devil," and most of the covers are painfully bad. Ozzy? Awful. Guns 'n' Roses? Yuck. Laibach (who I usually love)? Oh sweet Satan, no!
Tiamat not only managed a decent cover, they actually gave it a whole new dimension. Jagger's take on it was lighthearted, tongue-in-cheek, energetic, and playfully mischievous. Edlund made it serious, dark, sinister, and dangerously subtle. He did to SftD what Joe Cocker did to "With a Little Help From My Friends."
My only gripe is that he cut the "Call me Lucifer" verse, which I think is the climax of the whole song. Every bit of it, "guess my name," seemed to be leading up to that.
