Hi,

Since most members here read, and now with the Amazon linked up, maybe it would be a nice time to start a book club whereby we could discuss a given decided upon book.

Any ideas for which book might be a good one to start with?

thanks,
Morgan

I suppose the cliche and "expected" answer, given the nature of this forum, would be TSB, Might Is Right, Beyond Good and Evil, or something of that nature.

I'm reading a book called The Demon Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark by Carl Sagan. I have found it pretty engaging thus far and think people here might enjoy it. Well, there's my two cents.

A nice bold task, Morgan... and good first suggestion "666", but are we going to all go out and read that one now? The only problem I see with this, is that the intent will get lost, and it will quickly turn into a "book list" of sorts, which we already have... it could quickly turn into that with "suggestions" - so I now ask for your executive action - is the first book suggested "our new book"?

Otherwise, some structure is necessary - is this to be a weekly thing, or a monthly thing... You know I'm reading pretty fast these days, but perhaps "monthly" would be better... that is "Satanic Book of the Month". And, since this is your little baby, I think a book of your chosing would be appropriate (as mentioned above), and one hopefully at least some of us already have... I could go broke with this thing!

So, read my mind and find a good book from my library!

Atlas Shrugged is a great book, so is Fountainhead. Been awhile since I read either of those and I sure as hell wouldn't mind reading them again.

HA!

most of the books I read are political or survivalist. Both genres I think are relevant, but I'm the merry minority in reading material...You want to brave some, "Out of range"? or "When technology fails" anyone? Howzabout some "poor mans' james bond"?...

Yeah, I didn't think so....

Ah, don't write us off too quickly CS!

I for one think that the books you mentioned would make very interesting reading.

"When technology faiks", and "Poor man's James Bond" have piqued my interest...

I've just finished reading "Without concience- Charles Manson in his own words"
It describes in minute detail the events in his life that culminated in the forming of the Family, and the Tate/LaBianca murders.

Pretty gripping reading (if your interested in that sort of thing!)

I would suggest doing a structured “book a month” type of thing, where there would be one month to read and discuss a book and then at the first of the month introduce a new title. In my experience book clubs are a very part-time thing, so I would suggest choosing books that wouldn’t take a long time to read (unless you found a great, long book, then you could keep that title for two months rather than one). You could put up a pole once a month with the top picks for books and go with the one that gets the most approval.

Why not start with one of LaVey’s classics? I’m rereading The Devil’s Notebook right now...

I wanted something out of the usual 666 mindset.
Yet, something that was revelant to making one think.

As I mentioned, once decided upon (the book), anyone could comment or bring up questions as they read it.

I don't expect it to appeal to the whole mass of members here.
But I do expect it to appeal to some members here.

"Atlas Shrugged", then?

Isn't that book like ten-thousand pages...? Ayn Rand... ugh... I'll do it...

We could always read the Cliff's Notes versions ;\) Or Ayn Rand for Dummies.

Just kidding...I'd be up to it, but as long as we can all read at our own pace, because I devour books and will not go slow for anyone!

I want to be in on it, too...but right now I have 4 classes and an IP left before I am supposed to be reading anything other than necessary textbooks...and I still haven't read my textbooks...which is sort of funny because I've already finished one class.

The books looked promising, though, "Democracy for the Few"...you know that's gonna be cynical.

Okay, I first thought that other people would add other titles to this discussion, and we could do a poll thus deciding a book that way.
But if you want to read or reread that book Atlas Shrugged, its fine by me.
I'll start on rereading it tomorrow.
I thought people might read at different paces thus why I said make comments or posts as they occur to you.

Sorry, I didn't realize your intent... I just didn't want this nice endeavor to become another "Book" thread... people just shouting out random titles. My apologies!

Poll sounds like a nice way to go.

Otherwise, the only Ayn Rand book I ever read was "Anthem", which has been discussed before... I almost gouged out my eyeballs while reading it... but I'll give this one a try.

I won't be reading this one in bed... and I'll keep a glass of water beside me at all times.

Ha! I actually liked 'Anthem'...at least it was a slim read.

I downloaded 'Atlas Shrugged' in pdf last night via torrent, so I'll start on that soon. We should start a separate thread for each book, for easier reference.

Okay, then Atlas Shrugged it is...
Whoever has a question/comment first can start the new thread with the book title in the heading.

Yeah, that's great...

So I went to the bookstore... and before I left the house I was thinking "Atlas Shrugged, Atlas Shrugged, Atlas Shrugged..." Then I started thinking about Ayn Rand's other books, and my loathing for "Anthem", and how I've heard about "The Fountainhead"...

So what do I do? I fucking end up buying "The Fountainhead"...

Unless you guys got a copy of "Atlas Shrugged", I'll count myself out of this one! Besides, I'm already invested in this one... and much to my surprise... I'm liking it.
