I consider myself a connoisseur of dark and golden rums, with there being a large selection available here in Blighty. My personal favourite dark rum is British Navy Pussers Rum, the original naval rum given to navy personnel for more than 300 years. Woods 100 is also a kick-ass dark rum, though at 57% i find i can't drink any more than a couple of an evening. Lambs Navy Rum is another affordable classic that should never be considered mediocre (unlike Captain Morgan which is a crap commercial rum purely for the rum-and-coke brigade) whilst Havana Club is almost my sole preference for golden rum. I also heartily recommend to other Brits the Sainsbury's Superior Dark Rum which has won Gold at the San Francisco Spirits And Wines Competition last year, which is virtually unheard of for an own-brand supermarket rum. Superb stuff. \:\)

Hearing you diss my precious Captain Morgan like that has certainly peeked my interest in your other suggestions.

I too was a captain morgan's fan. if you can, try Old Ezra or Ezra Brooks...it's bourbon, not rum, but it's good shit. smooth enough to drink on its own, even in the 101-proof selection...

Back in the day I use to drink Captain Morgan spiced rum and Coke mostly because it was around. One to many hard nights with The Captain have pretty much put me off dark rum.

In more recent times, most of hard drinking has been with Crown Royal. But, only on the rare special occasion....

I live in a city that used to to be famous for producing a rum called O.V.D. "old vatted demerara" Demerara was the sugar used. They still make OVD rum, but not here. It's black as pepsi and super sweet. But I'm not confident I could tell the difference between it and Meyers Jamaican rum.

Personaly, I like Sailor Jerrys Navy rum. It has a 92 proof kick to it, but it goes down easily. But keep in mind, it is harsh to people new to rum. Drink up, have fun!

I too am a fan of Sailor Jerry's. All the window sills of my basement are lined with empty Sailor Jerry's bottles.

My sister got me a bottle of Sailor Jerry's when she got back from a trip to Wales, I sent away a coupon that came with, plus the receipt for a cool little Sailor Jerry tattoo book. His work wasn't really to my taste, but I enjoyed the novelty of it. Over here I drink Jamaican Seadog, cheap and tasty (acquired), nicer than Morgans once you get used to it (I've always wondered about Morgans being called a dark rum....golden? I don't know)

But I went on a family holiday to St.Maarten Island in the Carribean that was validated and justified in my eyes only because of the Old Man Guavaberry Rum I bought over there (wish I got more). So good.
If you're ever feeling adventurous enough to buy an unfamiliar bottle of flavoursome goodness, (adventurous could maybe be replaced with "bored", I guess), I'd look into it.
Just look at the guy on the bottle.

That's how happy YOU could be. With alcohol.

Their rum is delicious. I got a bottle of it as well. I should have tried one of her guavaberry smoothies she makes. I had a sample of one, but didn't want to be toasted as I walked down the shops.

Side note--Never use the bathrooms at the McD's in St. Maarten. They are disgusting. As in, shit on the walls disgusting.

On a general rum note, pick up a bottle of 10 Cane Rum. It's light and goes down like liquid candy. Dangerously delicious, and tastes great in mojitos. For every other drink, I use Bacardi 8. It's aged and doesn't leave me with a hangover in the morning.

Awwww, my guy brought home some Sailor Jerry's as a treat and I must be one of those people who Domonic describes as being "new to rum"; it was far too harsh for me. (Then again, I'm a little girl when it comes to booze anyway. I like liqueurs and schnapps in mixed drinks with lots of soda or juice, so take that as you will.)

Captain Morgan's dark rums seem to cause worse hangovers than they are entitled from the degree of buzz they induce. :P As for the rum-and-coke brigade (to which I suspect I am a member), I love something sappy sweet like Malibu coconut rum.

Xiao, you'd probably enjoy a drink I made from Bacardi 8 and Dole Strawberry/Pineapple/Orange juice (or whatever flavor you like). Fill about 1/3 of the glass with rum, the rest with orange juice, mix, then pour over ice. Delicious and moderately healthy

I can't stand any Captain Morgan rums...it must be the way they're processed just makes for a very rough drink. The higher quality, more expensive rums are worth it if you're looking for flavor and having little to no hangover.

Just remember, it's the amount of sugar in a liquor that causes the degree of hangover you get, and if you're drinking sweet stuff, drink lots of water along with it. That's why those dark rums should be used in moderation.

Give me a bloody mary any day! I never have problems with those ;\)

5 shot glasses filled to the brim with 151
Light all five on fire
Drink as fast as you can (blowing out fire first)
See how long you can hold it before you puke

Alternatively:

Gargle broken glass
Drink Ipecac
Have friend hit you over head with a pressure treated 4x4

The results will pretty much be the same either way,

Ouch. I was about to argue otherwise, thought 151 was a brand or something.. I assume that it's 151 proof rum. 5 in a row would work wonders. I've never understood the whole flaming shot thing, and a google search described how but not why. Is it just a visual thing?

Wow, I like the sound of it...I haven't seen it round these parts, doesn't seem to be pricey at all. You'd pay at least the equivalent of $23 for a regular 40% bottle here though, 750ml.

The lighting of alcohol is often used to caramelize a rim that has been coated in sugar. Some people say it makes the alcohol taste a little better but the only thing I notice is that the shot burns more. The blue flame does look pretty cool though.

That sounds pretty good actually. I'll bet the flame looks awesome alright, though there's quite a wide and unique range of accidents I can see happening with it after a few too many \:D

We use to drink a shot called a Harbor Light. It was 1/2 Vodka (usually Absolute but I've seen them done with any kind of Vodka), 1/2 Blue Curacao (Bahama Mama Schnapps or Blue Raspberry Schnapps if you can't find the Curacao) in a shot glass topped with 151. Light the 151 and suck the shot up through a stir straw. You have to be fast or the straw melts and you'll have to blow the flame out to do the shot. I've watched too many people toast an eyebrow, a mustache and even a bit of hair.

As for Rum, well, I use to like it until I decided one night to tie one on with a bottle of 151 and some major Coca Cola. Didn't end well after almost a whole 5th but somehow I managed to still function the next day. Not well, but at least I was mobile. Now, if I can smell the run in a drink, it can't pass by my lips, although, Captain Morgan's Spiced Rum doesn't seem to bother me too bad in drinks.
