For your consideration,

http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2009/05/090519-missing-link-found.html

It's been all over the news here. Looks like a cat if you ask me, I guess they didn't do so well with thumbs and died out.

I was reading the article yesterday, pretty interesting stuff. I wonder what other artifacts of our primitive past are out there still undiscovered.

i think ida's cute.

this isn't really related to human ancestors, but they did discover a whole frozen mammoth baby. she is about 40,000 years old. an elephant never forgets, and apparently she was not to be forgotten. they are discussing ways to clone a mammoth using an elephant surrogate.

I saw all the videos on the baby mammoth.
She is so cute.

If they clone them, then what?
New food source?
New zoo exhibit?

How fucked is that, cloned to end up behind bars....

I agree that it wouldn't be the best idea to create a mammoth in an enclosed environment. Animals really and truthfully need to be in the wild, and our species has pretty much domesticated most animals.

But suppose they end up releasing a clone of a mammoth into the wild. Wouldn't there be a small chance that it could survive with other clones of mammoths?

The magic word is "suppose".
Before a clone is possible there must be literally thousands and thousands of try-outs. Before your first little baby mammoth is cloned, already thousands attempts should be done.

Another fun part is the fact that if a whole colony is being made, that diseases and certain negatif facts will arise since their genes are from the same mammoth (incest).
Also the mammoth dissapeared from the surface of the earth for a reason... Cloning one now is making a biological zombie..
The climate in this era is far too hot for a mammoth to survive, even if we change a bit the genetic make-up.

Exactly...that's why elephants have thrived, where the mammoths died out. Worry about resurrecting the mammoth when the Earth enters its next Ice Age and the bare-skinned elephants start dying off ;\)

Maybe then we can bring back the saber tooth tigers, sloths and cave lions, just for kicks. The Prehistoric times were just so much damn fun, we should live them over again.

You prove a valid point. It's still fun to think about either way.

*Sigh* One can only imagine these things I suppose...

i think the worst part is the fact that they're using an extinct animal (extinct for a reason) to be a "curio," as national geographic described it. how sad and lonely it will be. \:\(
