Thanks for the comments & forum reference. I am curious about this because the SB & SR seem to be floating around the Internet from identifiable sources, such as this forum, without noticeable efforts at copyright enforcement. This may trigger, or already have triggered, the Doctrine of Laches concerning these works.
This is of interest to me because over the years I have been thinking about doing an annotated, combined ebook of them, with extensive footnote analysis & possibly some more extended essays at the back. [The SB & SR chapters in my Church of Satan ebook give a rough idea of where such annotations might go.]
The original contents could also stand some cleanup of grammar, spelling & punctuation, foreign language correction & translation, restoration of original deleted contents, etc., though this would need to be done very carefully so as not to compromise the flavor of the original.
Well, I'll keep playing with the thing now and then, and perhaps check with an attorney as to whether general failure to enforce copyright effectively throws the SB/SR into the public domain where any future version is concerned.

It's seriously doubtful that the SB & SR would all into the public domain because of this. The CoS used to spend a lot of time going around to different websites that hosted the SB & SR in ebook format and threatening them with litigation (even though the CoS as a corporate entity doesn't own the rights), but they appear to have given up doing that.
I think the main reason is that the LaVey estate is split 3 different ways (and I think Diane also gets a cut of the SB royalties), and also the annual sales figures for both the SB & SR aren't all that spectacular. If the SB & SR were major money makers for the publisher, they'd be doing everything in their power to sue anyone putting up unauthorized copies of the books, like what the Harry Potter people have been doing.
There is a modified ebook of the SB floating around that has all four different introductions (including yours), and includes the original LaVey monographs and a bunch of other stuff.

Yeah, it's called "The Underground Satanic Bible" or something; you can find it on Rapidshare or as a torrent easily.
The two books aren't QUITE old enough to constitute public domain, but thankfully I don't think the publishers are douchebaggy enough to hunt down every crappy angelfire site with the PDF uploaded and bitch at them to take it down.
Although, I wish they would release a hardcover version again... A wimpy little pulp-paperback doesn't look very spectacular on one's personal necro-altar of ultimate evil.

Unfortunately, there hasn't been enough interest in releasing a hardcover edition since the University Books editions back in the early 1970s, but the hardcover rights are there to be acquired for any publisher willing to undertake the venture.
For what its worth, there's a guy on EBay who makes leatherbound hardcover editions out of paperback copies of The Satanic Bible and The Satanic Rituals. I can't vouch for his handiwork, but I've heard good things.
On occasion you can also find original 1st editions of The Satanic Bible by University Press on EBay as well. Prices range anywhere from $300-$1000, depending on the quality and of course how many motivated bidders are involved.

I think I know what you're talking about; they're basically hardbacked pleather slip-in covers with a symbol stamped on the front. Not the most stellar appearance in the world, but at 50 backs a pop they're the most affordable by a longshot.
Every so often, though, a professional binder will crank out a super-fancy leatherbound version and plop it out on Ebay. They're usually extremely beautiful, with raised bands, silk bookmark ribbons, marbled endpapers, and fancy Baphomet sigils embossed on the cover. (I almost creamed myself just thinking about it). Unfortunately, the bids and prices tend to shoot way off beyond my range.
Concerning copyright, I know some publishers prohibit re-binding of their books, but as far as I know Avon has no such restrictions.
In all likelihood I'll probably end up printing a single pirate copy for personal use, with both the SB and SR combined. (The mass paperback pulp paper is a bit icky in my opinion).
