Don't you actually have to DO something in order to get a Nobel? Not just SAY that you will? /facepalm
Those Europeans--they'd give an award to a turtle for moving slowly, "being peaceful to neighborhood children". Oy vey

I thought it was kinda bizarre too.
I am pasting the email I got from him in regards to it below:
m --
This morning, Michelle and I awoke to some surprising and humbling news. At 6 a.m., we received word that I'd been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for 2009.
To be honest, I do not feel that I deserve to be in the company of so many of the transformative figures who've been honored by this prize -- men and women who've inspired me and inspired the entire world through their courageous pursuit of peace.
But I also know that throughout history the Nobel Peace Prize has not just been used to honor specific achievement; it's also been used as a means to give momentum to a set of causes.
That is why I've said that I will accept this award as a call to action, a call for all nations and all peoples to confront the common challenges of the 21st century. These challenges won't all be met during my presidency, or even my lifetime. But I know these challenges can be met so long as it's recognized that they will not be met by one person or one nation alone.
This award -- and the call to action that comes with it -- does not belong simply to me or my administration; it belongs to all people around the world who have fought for justice and for peace. And most of all, it belongs to you, the men and women of America, who have dared to hope and have worked so hard to make our world a little better.
So today we humbly recommit to the important work that we've begun together. I'm grateful that you've stood with me thus far, and I'm honored to continue our vital work in the years to come.
Thank you,
President Barack Obama
Anyway, reality is weird.
Morgan

They're disillusioned by what they think the man can accomplish. They also can't fathom why so many Americans don't like him. They think, "He's so much like us, how can they POSSIBLY hate him?"
Mostly true, even before Obama was elected as president almost whole of Europe was in some Obama-craze. Critics against him were a bit pushed aside. Tv-programming which introduced a critical view against him were programmed in the very late night and/or with another more appealing program (sport or an exclusive movie) accompagnied.
Still now most people here see him as some kind of "savior" for economy and diplomatic issues. Not going to expand on the issue why most people think US-citizens are crazy for voting against some of his points. But the words "lack of perspective and vision about the US" spring to mind.
More on topic, it also kinda surprised me he received the Nobel price, I always thought it was awarded to someone who took some action. Maybe it's just as (Ankhape?) said, political issues and perhaps a few other things.
I'll only judge his leadership qualities when his job is done, looks the most fair to me and the best way to judge. The vision I have now is that the US has become an economical dead horse with Obama being a surgeon trying to revive it.

Any prize awarded for one's ability to fight for such an ephemeral concept as 'peace' is to be distrusted. Especially when all the recipient has done is apparently talking about peace as a nice thing. I could do the same, but I'm not the leader of the world's strongest military machine. If I were, I'm pretty confident I wouldn't be praising the Gandhis of the world.
But hey, he's said he wants to remove the "Don't ask; don't tell"-doctrine from the U.S. military. I keep thinking about what Denis Leary said about gays in the military: "You can fuck *anything* you want if you're in my armed forces! 'I wanna fuck a guy...' 'Here's another guy and a gun - go on, get in there!'"
I don't know - there may be a huge part of the picture I'm not seeing here. Using regular forces in conflict areas always gets you in trouble, but they're necessary for maintaining the precarious peace established by the spearhead forces going in first. The problem is that Dubya was perceived as over-extending his reach, even though optimistic estimates about international commitments in Iraq and Afghanistan stated that a 20-year-presence was to be expected.
I'm sure Jake has loaded some pretty weird stuff on board SOCOM's Chinooks in Incirlik, Turkey, half of which the U.S. Armed Forces would never acknowledge. SpecWar ops in and around the Middle East won't stop in the foreseeable future, and giving the sitting POTUS an award for saying it will is just wishful thinking. But hey, that's what they do - they're the Nobel committee.

I wonder if Obama had even read this e-letter. I am sure one of his speech-writting lackeys wrote this well ahead of time and had it ready to be posted the day of the award. I thought this was a joke until I went and read it on several other newssites. I don't think he's done anything to warrant the kind of recognition the Nobel carries. And in this letter he admits he's not worthy... you're right Obama, you're not.
