Can an option be implemented into the profile page to change one’s display name? Or did the method of doing such a thing exceed my limitations of understanding?

For now you can always PM one of the moderators or administrators (other than myself) and ask them to change it for you.
Login names are separate from display names, the latter can be changed while the login names remain fixed (as far as I'm aware), so your login remains the same.
Personally I prefer people to have a fixed name. If you fuck up, live with the consequences. Else every bozo posts trash, swaps names and starts with a clean sheet.
And those of us who remember Anthony West remember his last time here. Those who don't can refresh their memory from the posting history on his profile. Hope it's not a case of "here we go again."

Yes, suck it up. You should keep the same name.
If you learned from your past, then it isn't a problem.
If anything, with all your whining about your name and making a new intro, instead of just writing responses to posts, more people are now going to read your older posts and see what a dick you were.

There is nothing wrong with him changing his name. As we have learned if you were watching that is, when a name is changed it changes everywhere even on the old posts.
Now this is strictly assumption but perhaps Tony here has learned enough to realize that putting his first and last name as a nick on a forum as this wasn't the smartest thing to do.
If I were looking to change my nick here, I would pm the site owner. If you cant figure that out then start with the admins. Be prepared to wait as a name change might not be anyone's top priority.
