 Quote:
Late last week, Apple notified developer Chillifresh that its Wobble iBoobs application was being removed from the App Store due to its "overtly sexual" nature. Since then, it appears that Apple has gone on a rampage of sex-oriented app removals...

Chillifresh claimed in a Saturday post that a discussion with Apple revealed that more than 5,000 apps have been affected by its new App Store content policy.

While some have complained about such 'adult' software, I personally prefer an open system where you can obtain and run whatever kind of software you want.

I expect the iPad will face similar limitations too.

Is it just me, or is Apple becoming a bit Big Brother-ish?

It's your toy, you spent a lot of money on it. You should be damn well able to put whatever kind of porn you want on it.

I think until it hits them in the money, or bad publicity, Apple is just going to go all prude and limit everyone's content.

5,000 apps is a lot, that means it affects a lot of users. Thus unless people bitch, nothing will happen.

I think Apple is following a kinda silly path. Their last horrible creation is just amazing. Job's recent attack on flash and the exclusion of it is funny if you look at it in the light of being potential app-store competition. Who would buy their apps when the stuff would be freely or cheaply available online?

And about banning sex. Sex sells. Ban it and you risk losing your customers to the competition.

Indeed. One of the reasons VHS video was so popular back in the day (and trounced the superior Betamax) was because of the huge number of bootleg porno videos available for it.

In 2010, adults expect to be able to download porn and play pornographic apps and games, whether Flash-based or otherwise.

Surely the best solution would be to use a content filter by default for the app store, so potentially offensive app content is not shown unless this is wanted. This would please both the prudes and those after some one-handed portable gaming. The fact that Apple decided to go down the blanket ban route is very telling. That expensive toy does not in reality belong to you, it belongs to Apple...

The naming of the iPad is also somewhat amusing in light of this YouTube video which has been up for 3 and a half years now:

I wonder... did they genuinely miss that or just hoped people wouldn't notice?

Apple has been "Big Brother-ish" for years now. They are the most anal-retentive company I've ever heard about. They only thing they have going for them is the fact that their products are awesome. However their service, their prices for aforementioned products, and the manner in which they force the consumer to bend to THEIR will instead of catering to the consumer's needs, you'd think would be enough to keep people away from Apple.

I hate Apple on principle, but I use an ipod for the mp3 player in my truck. Ahhh, hypocrisy!

Mostly at least. The iPad doesn't look "awesome" by any stretch of the imagination. More like an overpriced and underpowered netbook with no Flash support, no multitasking, a crappy iPhone OS and (in the iPhone mold) Apple-censored apps.

Did I mention it's quite a bit slower than the refurbished netbook I picked up for under half the price? I have no problem playing porno Flash games on that either, hell it even runs GTA Vice City at a playable speed, and Photoshop CS3 and MS Office 2007 run pretty well (so would Office 2010). On Windows 7 Ultimate to boot. Let's see the iPad do that ;\)

Orwell was right.

OK, to avoid making a one-line post I have to say that I think Apple has messed up big-time here with its over-zealous approach to (presumably) maintaining "family values" or some such. Sex does indeed sell and I believe consumers are going to find this latest development pitiful and off-putting. Surely porn doesn't randomly flood your iPhone when you're checking the weather report, for example? *Immediately visualizes pictures to accompany warnings of a cold front and sudden showers down south* \:\)
People can choose what they see, can't they? Or are they really so incapable? Hang on, I just remembered where I am so that's probably a rhetorical question. ;\)

It is bad enough that the iPhone is incredibly over priced and does not come with a warm wet hole. Taking away porn is going too far; people need their porn! I never had any intention of getting an iPhone but now I will definitely stick with my Razor. Motorolla doesn't care if I want to look at porn on my phone ;\)

They'll probably launch "upgraded" iPad versions soon, including some of the essentials now lacking. That's how you make cash; you launch something on the market, have all the Apple-fanatics buy it because it is Apple and then you launch a new and slightly better version to make them sell their shit and invest in the new version again.

If there is one thing I do like about Apple, it's how they make their users feel unique by selling them just another mass-consumer product like all the others do.

Aye, but not just ANY product. The high price tags are a status symbol for many, giving customers the impression of belonging to a classy elite little club reserved for those able (and willing) to cough up.
Reminds me of the old slogan of Stella Artois, "Reassuringly Expensive". (Always used to make me laugh - 'expensive' as an actual selling point.)

If you want to show off some bling bling which will last, get a Rolex. (Wearing one in public might be akin to carrying around a huge "Rob Me" banner, but that's besides the point...)

It might actually still be worth something in 5 years time, unlike silicon which doubles in power every 18 months, turning your once impressive gadget into a relative pile of junk in no time. Sure, many keep old hardware for nostalgic reasons, but the bottom line is that a more capable product WILL come out for less - and much sooner than you may like.

The latest Apple product is hardly an investment. Still, if you have plenty of disposable income (with the emphasis on 'disposable'), knock yourself out ;\)

This doesn't surprise me at all. A little while back I came across this article ( http://www.cracked.com/article_18377_5-reasons-you-should-be-scared-apple.html ) detailing the various over the top type crap that Apple pulls.

Then again with the way some people go crazy over anything with the apple logo, they kinda deserve what they get.

Apple products are pretty Maw, even the bags and boxes they come in make you feel all warm and fuzzy.

I was in the Apple shop in Glasgow, and I have to say, my wallet nearly fainted. There was so much gadgetry on hand; I just about had to change my slacks.

But the sales staff.....erg, forget about it. Talk about high pressure sales.

Upon entering the shop I was greeted by a gimp in red, whose name tag informed me his name was Gavin;

“Laptop, or desktop? What your preference?”

“Well” I replied, “I’m a little of both, but I’m just in here to get my sister an iPod touch.”

“Ah, then you might be interested in our notebook range, they are of course compatible with the touch, and can be used for a multitude of tasks.”

“No, really, it’s just the 32gb touch I’m looking at today”

“Well we have the iphone here; it has all the functionality of the touch and a great deal more. The operating system is the same as the touch, so if you have both, there will be little confusion when switching between the two.”

“Yes, I’m sure that is very handy if you own both, but I’m simply interested in the touch.”

“Right you are sir, what version of the touch are you interested in getting her?”

“Well, I was thinking of the 16gb first or maybe the 32gb version, but because she is in university and is studying photography, I figured that a larger memory might be the better option, what with here need to move allot of pictorial data.”

“Are you sure that the 64 GB might not be the best option?”

“No, I’m sure. Just the 32 GB.”

“Does she have a printer and a laptop? A friend of mine was at university doing something quite similar and he needed....”

“Yes she has both”

“Is she happy with them? You do realise that no computer system on earth is suited to multimedia like the apple, and our printers are top of the line...”

“Yes, she is ecstatic. Ring this up for would you.”

“Of course sir, would you like to pay but cash or by card?”

“Card”

“Okey doke....would you like to by an iTunes gift certificate?”

Irritation personified was our Gavin.

And now the crackdown on porn/happy pants fun time apps...its a joke.

They need to watch their step with this one.

Can you imagin if their Safari browser starts blocking porn? The streets would be chock a block with irritated Graphics designers and tetchy Sound engineers.

Yes, they're worse than furniture store salesmen. Unless you really have no idea what to buy, stay away from their stores. My boyfriend bought iPod touches for both him and myself at one of the big US wholesale stores, Sam's Club (which is a wholesale Walmart). While there wasn't any flashy demonstrations to play with, there were no salespeople jumping down your throat to add shit to your purchase. You just take a purchase card to the checkout, and the cashier will run and get it for you. Pay. Leave. Simple.

Having never been in one before, my curiosity got the better of me and I ventured inside. Despite knowing EXACTLY what I wanted, I was still hard pressed to keep the braying moron off my back. I dare say that in future, I shall reserve my spending to online shopping or failing that, large electronic shops.

I doubt I will venture into another, even for the iPad.
