I *love* the Twilight Zone!
We're making our way through the original series at Casa Maw right now, and we've been doing so for months. Some episodes are good; others not so much. Even the less-than-perfect episodes are good in that they score head and shoulders above The Outer Limits' most recent run. The latter show had turned into some kind of proselytizing soapbox for its obviously xtian creators, whereas Rod Serling's brainchild was all about providing good scares.
Of course, there are moral lessons baked into TZ as well, but these are mostly of the open-ended kind, whereby the viewer can draw their own object lessons. Like you, Matthew, I hate being spoon-fed.
The b/w early 60's style also serves the show well. There's something inherently *good' about it. We're almost dreading the viewing of the more recent episodes, since the show's charm was its style.
Then again, Rod Serling was awesome. I think he could make a show about ants and it would be awesome.
I like the dramatized short stories best, especially when written by sci-fi luminaries like Richard Matheson. Matheson had his finger on the pulse of man's fears. How the recent "I Am Legend" turned into such a load of wank I'll never know. The book was so awesome I actually cringed when watching the film.
Episodes of TZ such as "The Shelter" would probably not be made today, since they were misanthropic and wouldn't pass through the moral filter of the producers of today's network programming.
TZ is a work of art, and one everyone will be a better person for watching. Miss it at your own risk!

Twilight Zone was the "must see" TV of its time. Even as young kids, there were people talking about the episodes the night before. We didn't understand the underlying political messages at times, such as when the "aliens" began taking over the city "one neighborhood at a time... one neighborhood at a time," or the diner that was attracting aliens, etc. It was just good, interestingly spooky fun.
Once a year, there's a Twilight Zone marathon on one of the old-time-TV channels, and I'll always be found, sleep deprived, unshaven and munching a snack, watching the same old reruns and finding something new every time.

The Monsters are due on Maple Street. I think that may be the episode where the “aliens” begin taking over the whole city neighborhood by neighborhood. You can see that episode here. It was famous enough to be the finale chapter in the first TZ paperback book collection.
