Well this seems to be a pretty good list of metal bands as well as some other stuff. I personally like Killswitch Engage, In Flames, As I Lay Dying, and of course Avenged Sevenfold. If you're interested in instrumental music, Blue Sky Black Death is a production duo in LA that has forged a genre of music somewhere between hip hop, classical, and believe me when you hear it you'll understand.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g3ww8LoTLp0&feature=related

Other than those bands, 30 Seconds to Mars, and Flyleaf, and maybe DevilDriver and Underoath. Otherwise I listen to rap and Linkin Park, maybe Rage Against The Machine.

well I'm not into very much metal, there's a few metal bands I'm into, which I've included in my list, my favorite being Dark funeral. I'm a punk-rocker so in general I like anything spooky and punky as fuck, mainly horrorunk. My favorite punkrocker is a guy who goes by the name of wednesday 13. this guy I find to be a true genius. he knows how to reach multiple different crowds to boost his record sales. For instance he's known to be a horrorunk artist, but he's also experimented with metal, glam, goth, and just recently even country music. Wednesday is a grade A artist in my book.

I have a wide taste in music but the base was pretty much always metal. Some of my favorite artists are given below:

[Metal] - Megadeth, Mastodon, Anaal Nathrakh, Morbid Angel, Machine Head etc.

[Rock] - Muse, Guns N Roses, Alice in Chains, Rush etc.

[Folk/neofolk etc] - Clannad, Triarii, Rome etc.

[Country] - Garth Brooks, Johnny Cash etc.

[Jazz/fusion] - Miles Davis, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Weather report, Esbjörn svensson trio (E.S.T.) etc.

[Scores] - I love alot of the Danny Elfman and Hans Zimmer scores. The score from "the fountain" may be my favorite though but I cant remember who wrote it at the top of my head.

[Pop] - The Beatles, Amy MacDonald etc.

I did just start to get into opera and I do love "die zaubtflöte" (one of the all time classics of course) and I also started to explore electronical music. It has so many subgenres but I believe its some kind of trance music that appeals to me the most.

Woha long list Mardi Gras x)

I listen to very few bands, and the reason for that is that when I first hear a band, and like em, I stick to it and can't really bother to search for other music, unless I stumble across some music that I might enjoy.. But heres my list..

In Flames (All time favorit)
System Of A Down (First band I fell in love with)
30 Seconds to Mars (However not their new album)
Flyleaf
Bullet For My Valentine
Serj Tankians Elect the Dead
Scars on Broadway
Raunchy
Kamelot
All That Remains

I have well over 10,000 songs in my library, so I'm just going to suggest a few bands to you based on what I see on your list.

The Blackshirts
The Tossers
The Business
Day of the Sword (particularly, "blood stained emerald")
Crass
The Buzzcocks
Crystal Method
666
Exploited
GG Allin
Megaherz (suggested to me but admittedly untested as of yet)
Redneck Girlfriend (I have no idea if they are available to the masses, sorry)

anything by any band that Chris Jones has ever been in.

Bon Appetit

Nice to see what all of you are into.

I'll just give you a sample of what shakes my headset these days. Being from that neck of the woods, I'm prone to listen to Norwegian black metal such as Dimmu Borgir, Satyricon, Immortal, and to a lesser degree Enslaved. Lately, I've also had a taste of Windir. Worthy Swedish bands are, among others, In Flames and Dissection. Ah, how I do love the hoarse harmonics of Maha-Kali from Reinkaos.

Cradle of Filth, At the Gates, Children of Bodom, Stormlord has also gotten alot of space on playlists lately. Among the classic, I would list Metallica, Slayer and Iron Maiden. Although I don't listen to them all that much these days, they sure as hell had their influence on me. System of a Down is one the more genuinely innovative bands, but again they have been replaced in the harsh competition on my playlist.

I could go on for awhile with the metal, but I probably should mention some of the things I like from other genres. Queen and Depeche Mode are sort of cornerstones of my music taste. I listened a lot to these as a teenager, along with a surprising amount of classical music. When I listen to non-metal today it is likely to include Depeche Mode, Madrugada, Yello, and Muse.

To be clear, my first love is classical music. However, I am by no stretch of the imagination stuck to any particular genre. My speakers go where my mood takes them and that mood can span all genres and almost any language. All the bands I suggested to the OP are from my own library or memory just based on his list of preferences (he did note that he was interested in expanding his own library).

I have to admit, I was a little surprised that there were not more bands in this thread that were unknown to me. I'm not exactly a follower of what is popular or a slave to any particular stereotype/mindset.

When it comes to classical music and opera, I'm listen to Wagner, Beethoven, Bach and Mozart. In my teens, Wagner got the most play-time. I still like it pompous, it seems :). Just now I had a touch of Borodin put in between Madrugada and Yello.

Check your email for a copy of Mr. Bojangles from an honors award that the did for Sammy Davis Jr. just before his death. It's a little darker than most versions of the song, where he talks about his feelings about the song itself. In most of his shows, he always spoke well of the song, but this shows his anxieties over it.

I like music that, by my standards, does not suck. I listen to mostly punk and metal but I have been known to stray out of my comfort zone and enjoy other genres as well. Really it would be easier for me to say what I don't like: "gangsta" rap, country (excepting the Man in Black), pop (excepting Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and P!nk), and any music that sings the praise of Jebus.

Like you, I'm quite eclectic in my musical tastes.

This may get me banned, but I can't stand metal bands whose singers sound like cookie monster. Beyond that, I like tons of different stuff.

I like big jazz era bands, Cab Calloway & the like.

I like crooners a lot, have a ton of Dean Martin & Sinatra.

I like Polynesian Pop\50's & 60's tropical\exotica like Martin Denny + Les Baxter + Arthur Lyman

I like new-ish Halloween themed swing like the Moon Rays (Swingin' at the Seance) old surf type music, etc

There is a lot of Country I like but most of it is old like Hank Williams Sr, Waylon Jennings, Roger Miller etc

I LOVE the Squirrel Nut Zippers.

I like metal.. Metallica is one of my favorite bands. I also love 80's style metal like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and the like.

Right now I like the fusion of metal & opera like the first Nightwish album and these guys:

Diablo Swing Orchestra.

That's it, too much to list really.

Your musical taste would hardly cause you to be banned from this site; although I'm sure that you know that.

I love "Hair Metal" from the 80's, but in no way would that make me a Satanist, or anything else. We just like different kind of noise. I can't stand Jazz, even though my father was a big fan, and tried to explain the intracacies (sp?) of the thing, it still sounds like crap to me. I do like some of the "blues" though. It's just a matter of individual taste.

Yeah, I was being facetious ;\)

I was sort of poking fun at the perceived relationship between death metal, black metal & Satanists. Certainly many Satanists do enjoy this type of music but I've also run across a few who'd prefer to listen to Tiny Tim strum Tiptoe Through the Tulips than to listen to metal.

It was the lifestyle he lived that killed him, it was also the lifestyle he lived that made his music what it was. The only way GG could still be alive today is if he didn't live the life that he did. If that were the case his music would suck.

My music choices vary from day to day. Classical, classic rock, hard rock, southern rock, soft rock, pop, industrial/grunge, some rap (nothing hard gangster type), and some country.

Here are some in my collection. I know, I know....stuck in the past but some of these are just too great to give up. Ok, a lot of these!

Bach
Beethoven
MoZart
Handel
Lerue Delashay (some of the most intense goth/classical you can imagine)
Jackyl
Rob Zombie
Metallica (their S&M CD locked me in with the San Francisco Orchestra playing with them)
Whitey Ford
Queen
Van Halen
Sammy Hagar
Nine in Nails
Linkin Park
Collective Soul
Match Box 20
Kiss
3 Days Grace
3 Door Down
Nickleback
Kid Rock
Uncle Kracker
Jay-Z
Pink
Evanescence
Seether
Breaking Benjamin
Korn
Mudvayne
Tool
Creedence Clearwater Revival
Eagles (nothing better than hearing Hotel California live to set a witchy mood)
Garth Brooks
Travis Tritt
Brooks and Dunn
Lynyrd Skynyrd
Pink Floyd
Aerosmith
Creed
Marilyn Manson
Godsmack
Meat Loaf
Velvet Revolver
Def Leppard
Lady Gaga
Triumph (One of the most INCREDIBLE concerts even to this day!)
Bad Company
ZZ Top
Bon Jovi
Phil Collins
Peter Gabriel
Genesis
Trans Siberian Orchestra
Rolling Stones
Led Zepplin
Christina Aguilera
Foo Fighters
Green Day

And these are the one's I can remember without looking at our collection of CD's and the music I've got on my computer. There's some big bands on here, along with some really good oldies but it's late and I'm finally pooped. Hope you've found something else to add to your collection, cause so far in this thread there's been a ton of good music suggested.

I couldn't have said any better. The music I listen to mainly depends on the mood of the moment. I enjoy (in no particular order): 60s and 70s rock (Led Zeppelin and not so famous bands like Sweet Smoke, Loudest Whisper, Tennent & Morrison), classical music (Mendelssohn, Bartók, Brahms, Debussy, Malher, Saint-Saëns), blues (from Robert Johnson to Derek & The Dominos to Roadhouse) and, well, some heavier things like The Stooges, old Marilyn Manson stuff, Dimmu Borgir or anything with big guitars.

I must admit, the older I get, the softer the music :]

I'm a music/sound obsessed mind. I have a tendency toward extremism and experimentation. My favorite musics are those that not only accept being as inaccessible as possible but make a pride and beauty about it. This has lead me down the deep paths of avant-garde, free-jazz, harsh noise, death/black metal(although that's clearly become it's own kind of accessible popular music now) I would highly suggest the widely unheard-of Rock in Opposition movement that developed in europe in the 70s. The bands Magma(which kindof spawned it's own "zeuhl" style), Art Bears, Universe Zero, and Art Zoyd in particular.

If you're interested in expanding your horizons big enough for your mind to fall out here's some suggestions-
The Residents

The Boredoms

Ruins (Yoshida Tatsuya is the best drummer I've ever heard)

Naked City

Mr. Bungle

Sleepytime Gorilla Museum

Magma

So much to choose from and what to pick I think in all honesty some of my favorites are
Alabama
Alan Jackson
All that Reamins
As Blood Runs Black
As I Lay Dying
Atreyu
August Burns Red
Avenged Sevenfold
Big & Rich
Canibal Corpse
Charlie Daniels
Coal Chamber
Cradle of filth
CCR
Def Leppard
Devil Driver
Devil Wears Prada
Deicide
Dio
Disurbed
Dope
Godsmack
Gorgoroth
Guns N Roses
Hatebreed
Hollywood Undead
Ill Nino
Iron Maiden
Job for a Cowboy
Kill Whitney Dead
Lamb of God
Linkin Park
Marilyn Manson
Metallica
MSI
Montgomery Gentry
NIN
Rammstein
Skillet
Slipknot
Toby Kieth
Trace Adkins

I am a music fiend I live for my music. I like anything up beat but cant stand Rap, RnB or Hip-Hop. I have a tendency to stick to music that will get my heartbeat up or that just makes me want to fight, but I like to ralax to my country side every now and then

Being a kid in the '70's I have a real fondness for that era in music. I love '70's R&B/Soul. But I'm a huge fan of '70's guitar rock. It's what shaped my own style in starting as a musician. There are too many to list but here are my main influences:

KISS
Elivs Presley
AC/DC
Cheap Trick
Ted Nugent
The Who
The Stones
Led Zep
Foreigner
Thin Lizzy
Prince
Queen
Parliament

I have to say, I never really cared for The Stones until I heard them in concert. The age range at the concert was incredible, from kids around 10 and 11 on up to guys with walkers. They rocked the stage and the Collisium rocked the entire concert as everyone sang to every song. They earned my respect that night.

Then again, Kiss seems to do that any given show. lol

I listen to too many things. I'll throw out some genres first.

Black Metal (1349, Satyricon, Tsjuder, Absurd, Enslaved)
DSBM (Thy Light, Life is Pain, Morthond)
Death Metal (Grave, Nile, Entombed, CC)
Melodeath (In Flames, At the Gates, Mors Principium Est)
Jazz (all types)
Blues
Punk (Oi, Pogo, Crust, Power Violence, Grindcore, Hardcore)
Classical
Gothic Rock/Metal (Graveworm, Theatre of Tragedy)
Folk (Of the Wand and the Moon, DMB [that counts])
Electronic (DJ Mystic, Lady Gaga)
Industrial (Ministry)
NDH (Eisbrecher, Rammstein, Oomph!)
EBM (Early Oomph!, and other things I can't be bothered to remember)
Power Metal (Iron Maiden, DragonForce, Manowar)
Doom Metal (Sahg, My Dying Bride, Anathema, Paradise Lost)
Funeral Doom (Funeral, Doom:VS, Shape of Despair)
Classic Rock (Motley Crue, AC/DC, Deep Purple)
Technical Death Jazz (Cynic)

That should give a tiny bit of an idea.

Music that stands for freedom and expression. That be anything. It's not the music itself, it's the message.

The music video is almost as equal to the song for me to like the song, with a few exceptions such "A Benediction" by Winterpills.

I don't have a hatred for most music, except the type were it's not really from the creator's mind but from the company that person was working for.

Dr. Aquino,
I'm sure you forgot 'one' other artist . . . the infamously diabolical 'Black Muse Element'.

Arthur Lymon's 'TABOO' was one of my first recordings I ever dug, my dad had it, along with a bunch of swing, also cool. Those exotic grooves and sound effects, to this day, influence my recordings and probably directed me towards the musical path I have taken.

I assuredly haven't overlooked Black Muse or many talented individual Setian artists, but here was just citing commercial works.

Ah yes, the magical working that inspired thousands of nationwide backyard tiki parties in the '50s. Lyman later came out with Taboo 2, whose shrunken-head cover scandalized the Great Unwashed as much as the infamous Beatles' "butcher cover". At least with T2 you have the option of folding the cover over to reveal a more tikiloungey one.

The chump-change world of Satanism has nothing on the hideous, blasphemous, and forbidden Tiki Cult, which even now plots to subvert world governments, replace all opium, heroin, & pot with tiki drinks, and convince all young girls to remain virgins until they can be properly tossed into volcanos. [This is admittedly getting more complicated in today's multiwhateversexual culture.]

I also have a weak spot for really hick country music - you know, the sort where the singer can't figure out whom he loves more - his dead girlfriend, his pig, or his coon dog. Here's a sample. Lilith generally throws me out of the house when I play this stuff.

I have recently been listening to the Elvis Presley Sun sessions, which I love. I like that stripped down sound and those songs and the sort of raw excitement generated. Also Sam Phillips was a crazy genius!

I have a three CD set of raw garage rockabilly songs – just wild stuff that I like and never was released in its day.

I also have been listening to Howlin Wolf’s old Chess records sides - what a voice.

I like the music that came out of Stax, Motown, Chess, Sun and Atlantic.

I also like deep rural blues and the evocative nature of it.

You may ask: you’re an Australian, do you actually like any Australian music? I do, but tend to get off on the sort of music the Blues Brothers loved, as well as that San Francisco 60's sound. Velvet Underground and Lou Reed as well (Buffalo Springfield) etc. etc.

P.S. the best feel-good song of all time is ‘Slice of Heaven’ by Dave Dobbins. This is a song which went along with a movie of my favourite cartoon strip Footrot Flats.

Here lately I've been listening to a local radio station while driving to and from work that's pumping out some fantastic music and has gotten me completely hooked on Shinedown. I liked them before but this song just gets the blood pumpin' even after working all night! Even 6am can rock!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WGt-8adyabk&playnext=1&videos=NBSSSbL6PiM&feature=artistob

Edit: I just discovered, if you let the link above just stay and don't click through more or close it out, it plays more of their songs. I love their version of Simple Man and Devour kicks ass too. I'm going shopping this morning at the local CD Exchange!!

I really like the way you've worded this.

It explains why I avoid most popular music, including populist classical (Mendelssohn, anything Russian except Rimsky-Korsakov).

I'm mostly a classical listener, but I love classic metal (Maiden, Priest) and old school death metal and black metal.

Also I have a weakness for some ambient like Tangerine Dream, Biosphere, Troum, Autechre and Maeror Tri.

I've decided to type a short list of musical genres because typing out a list of bands would be huge and annoying.

Ska
Black/Death Metal
Thrash
Grind Core
Classic Rock
Punk

That covers the major points of my musical tastes. Thank you.

I must say that I have been stuck on industrial for a straight couple of years. I normally don't stray from it and actually took on a 6 hours bus ride to Chicago last year to see KMFDM and Angelspit. I would also have to lay claim to my love of almost all 90's alternative.

_Too Dark Park_ & _Last Rights_ are two of my favorite albums of all time. They provided a dark and haunting sonic atmosphere for a special period in my life, when I first identified with the term Satanist.

Why not? They make good music.

I also like Earth, Wind & Fire, Rick James, David Bowie, Robert Plant (including post-Zep), Van Morrison, America, Run DMC, Public Enemy, Grim Reaper, Dusty Springfield, Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Abba, Al Green, Frank Sinatra, the Conan soundtrack (Basil Pouledoris), Rob Zombie, and lots of classical music (but I cannot identify them by tune yet).

But I never liked Aerosmith, and I'm totally burned on AC/DC - if I never hear Back In Black again, it'll be too soon.

And of course all country music just sucks. Except for maybe Hank Williams, Sr.

How many takes is that?

Ok...gotta go there....LMFAO!
Nah, none of those surprised me. I guess those two just wasn't something I was expecting. I know how you feel about AC/DC, and quite frankly, after my younger sister replayed Thriller at least 100 times a day when I was a teen, I feel the same way about Michael Jackson. Janet had a couple of decent teen songs, but beyond that, I couldn't really get into her music.

I have to tell you, I like David Bowie's music, especially some of the stuff he put out for the movie Labyrinth, his Little Drummer Boy (Peace on Earth) medley that he did with Bing Crosby, and even his duet Dancing in the Streets with Mick Jagger . BTW, one of the BEST concerts I ever saw was the Stones, who at the time I really didn't care for at all. They rocked the house for more than 2 1/2 hours and the place was standing and singing right along with them the WHOLE time. To boot, the crowd ranged from 9 year olds (or about that) to guys with walkers that could have passed for my great grandpa at that time. They earned my respect that day.

As for Robert Plant (post-Zep), I liked his music too, until I saw him in concert. The show was extremely short (under an hour total stage time) and what he did to the songs, just completely blew. I wouldn't go to another show of his if it was FREE.

Yeah, two different things. Listen to the music - don't pay attention to concerts, scandals, VH1 exposes, etc. Just listen to the music.

I never cared what anybody did outside the song. Every celebrity has drug stories, sex stories, crime stories, Entertainment Tonight and The Enquirer stories ... Michael Jackson may or may not have been a child molester, I don't care - I don't know him, I'm not voting for him, I just like his music.

How does the saying go? Average people talk about events, great people talk about ideas, small people talk about people.

I know what you mean. I enjoy a good concert, but I was ruined at a young age. 13 and my first rock concert was Kiss, with Queensryche opening for them. I can't even count how many concerts I've been to since then. I've known a few bands and my favorite times where when they would practice in a garage or a basement. I think that's why I've always liked concerts. My favorite concert was Bad Company and Triumph. I've always been a huge fan of both bands and to see them in one show was "It" for me. Triumph had one hell of a light show. I don't care what the latest gossip is about the bands or singers. I just want to enjoy them playing and putting on a good show. If they're having a good time performing, all the better for me!

I love most of what Robert has done since Zep. Although I've been to his shows in the past, I decided to pass up on his recent tour because he is performing the songs he feels like doing , instead of what most fans want to hear. He doesn't give a shit( his pocketbook is not hurting), and the fans will still come into the show, to hear an acoustic version of "thank you" for the one millionth time.

I still harbor an irrational small sliver of hope that one day he will reach out to his former bandmates and gives us the tour we want (Robert is the only holdout preventing a Zep reunion), but I sure won't be holding my breath.

"Never a horse that couldn't be rode and never a cowboy that couldn't be throwed."

That pretty much covers every man, woman, singer, writer, actor... you name it. People are fickle to be sure, and today's superstars often wind up seeming like the bizarre and grotesque Norma Desmond, mind gone and still performing, coming screen forward and moaning "All right, Mr. DeMille, I'm ready for my close-up," in the 1950 production of HOLLYWOOD BOULEVARD.

EVERYONE has their personal moment of "jumping the shark," when their career is on the downhill slopes. In this case, musicians, especially hugely popular ones, have this moment magnified like a particle in the view of the nuclear powered microscope of fandom. You MUST be better than your last effort... but it MUST be the same. You can't deviate and hurt the fans, because they loved you as that innovative and music-forward rock star that broke them out or their doldrums. But now... stay the same. You belong to US, and our $15.95 for your latest CD gives us godlike powers to condemn you to hell for singing one single note of which we don't approve.

Ricky Nelson sang it best in his song "Garden Party." "If memories were all I sang, I'd rather drive a truck; but it's all right now. I learned my lesson well. You see, you can't please everyone, so you've got to please yourself."

We criticize and condemn those who take the formulaic route in writing and in music and in the graphic arts... where is that boldness? Where is the innovation? Don't you have the guts to do anything different? And then, as soon as they do, we damn them for all eternity on that one result we find disappointing. But at least THEY TRIED! THEY ACTUALLY TRIED! All we did was waste a few bucks on a disc of plastic.

Said it before and it bears repeating. Babe Ruth held not only the record for home runs, but the record for strike outs as well. He TRIED.

During times I was into the gigs and active in the amateur bands who asked me, I noticed there was a certain trend in which most of them tried to be innovative.
The problems that occured were:
a) They tried and used new sounds to make different numbers, but it didn't appeal to the crowds or the different music labels (even the small ones) to actually bring out a disc from these people.
b) they TRIED to be innovative but in the wrong direction. My former group from which I resigned is the perfect example. They try to become famous by being "innovative". But what they understand here is the use of already known sound effects and simply raising the volume on their speakers. Most of the time it is a very crappy sound (even scratching your nails on a chalkboard is more appealing). There was/is a certain understanding in most new bands that to be innovative you have to scream your lungs out of your body so you can't at least speak for a week, only to get that high-pitched sound which resembles a pig to be slaughtered.

The case of b) is one of the cases which occur most. Many new found groups try to combine different sorts of music (I guess the people here are familiar with terms such as "metalcore", "progressive grindcore",...). Sadly enough most of these attempts already exist and the new "sound" they want to create is already existant for ages. So far the innovative part.

I'm currently writing numbers which are a bit more on the odd side. Things such as a combination of Jamaican music with rock, GOA with a slight hint of drum and base,..

Anyway, the last band I would more or less call "innovative" would be Tenacious D. Credits to those who have tried, but sometimes things just sound bad no matter how hard you try.

And some people like music that sucks by their standards? Actually, it would be kinda funny to see that in a post. "I like music that, by my standards, sorta sucks."

If I were to simply say "I like music that doesn't suck" it doesn't really say much. By adding the part about my standards being the measure of judgment and what does and does not meet those standards, my thoughts are more clearly flushed out.

It might seem like an obvious statement to you but I can assure that if I had just said "I like music that doesn't suck" some smart-ass would have said something like "doesn't suck according to whom?"

I guess a smart-ass comment was inevitable after all.

My point was that it wasn't necessary at all (the thread is 'what kind of music are you into'). No big criticism, I was just being a smart ass. It made me smile because it immediately made me think of someone posting, "Here's the music I like, but, well, honestly, I personally think the stuff sucks."

Yes, I know you were being a smart ass. Hence my pointing it out in the post you responded to.

Okay Gentlemen!

I like Ministry's "With Sympathy"... because no matter how hard ass they try... Ministry will never get over that album in my book! It's like catching old footage of Marilyn Manson singing "Over the Rainbow"... if there was such a thing...

Marilyn Manson has never done a cover of that song that I know of, however, Me First and the Gimme Gimmes do a pretty sweet cover of it.

Some interesting selections, you might enjoy my show, Planet Trapezoid, on Dark Ryde. I play stuff in the neighborhood of Mr. Bungle and the Boredoms along with a lot of other off-center sounds. Give a listen

Ahhh...music...one of my favorite subjects. I admire you for being able to organize your tastes into an alphabetized post. I am much too scattered in thought to remember even half of what I love to listen to. I'd be better off trying list genres I am passionate about and then see if I can remember some of my top favorite artists within each.

First off I have to say Rush is my favorite “modern” band, and by modern I mean since the infiltration by the pop culture medium on the human psyche. To me they are their own genre and each individual band member holds an enormous technical influence over me. I play drums bass, guitar and a bit of keys but bass is my true passion. Geddy Lee is the school in which I continue to respectfully study for bass chops. I discovered Rush even before Satanism as a youngster, and to me Neil Peart’s lyrics reflect much of what I consider to be the Ayn Rand-influenced side of LaVey’s writings. Also – the guys in the band admittedly (obviously) challenge each other whenever they write new material in order to stay on top of their game. This is something that dusty old prog-rockers of the same era weren’t consistent in. (Would Rush ever write something equivalent to “Owner of a Lonely Heart”? Even for money?)

Hmmm, now to genres…
• Dark Ambient (really enjoying Lycia all over again, these days)
• Goth (Death Rock, Post Punk, Neoclassical, Neofolk – Christian Death to Death in June kinda stuff)
• Traditional Country (the fun, rebellious stuff from the hills…not Nashville)
• Appalachian Bluegrass (again, clearly NOT Nashville)
• Glam Rock (NY Dolls, Sweet, Bowie, Wizzard etc, – NOT Poison)
• Metal (mostly 80’s “shock” or “horror” Metal –Kind Diamond was a favorite of mine as a lad, along with his Glam Rock predecessor, Alice Cooper)
• Classical (piano concertos by the truckload)
• Tribal Percussion

That’s a good start, I suppose!

In the standpoint of music prior to looking on the Self in reflection of space, space cannot be contrasted to the Self and posited prior to the Self in relation to music. Let me give an example: As I sit, I think of where I sit as the "here." From this "here", space expands infinitely in all directions. By the mere fact of my sitting, space which extends infinitely in all directions comes to be as such. Neither is it the case that music comes to be created by my sitting as if this were somehow prior to infinite space.

There is no question of one being prior and the other being subsequent. (cause and effect) Infinite space unfolds simply as space. Music and as I sit are not two different things. We are not the same and yet are not seperate. Therefore, what we call music does not denote the space that is put forth by my sitting within. The infinite space that spreads out in all directions as I sit is the "here" of music.

In other words, from the standpoint of music; there is no space without my sitting (a "here").

I really love Satanic metal. I have enjoyed Mercyful Fate and King Diamond for years. I also like Alice Cooper and Danzig and Misfits. I enjoy some Elvis too, especially from the '68 Comeback tour, Guitar Man and EVIL especially. I recently started enjoying music from Black Widow, especially Come to the Sabbat! I like System of a Down too. It took me a long time, but I am going to buy some Marilyn Manson for the trip back from the west coast. I'll have to pick up some Rob Zombie too. For whatever reason, I don't have any Marilyn Manson or Rob Zombie material as of present. Even though both would be great for a long drive.

My house is split about equally between two dominant acoustic states; vibrating with music, or silence. Last night I was listening at intervals to “Dark Age of Reason” by the Scandinavian “neoclassical” group Arcana.

In the car it’s either news radio or CDs. On the way home earlier tonight it was “May All be Dead” by BDN. Both are part of a recently arrived order of new music from Cyclic Law -- the label and online catalog I referred to recently in another thread.

I listen to almost every kind of music: ambient, blues, tango, classical, rock, electronic, soul, reggae, punk, indie rock, lounge, jazz, hip-hop, rap, Mexican folk music (except northern crap), psychobilly, rockabilly, heavy metal, batcave and deathrock, etc. My collection is not very big, I only have 200gb of music, that covers only the "basic" stuff of each genre, I'm not a connoisseur.

My favorite genre changes every couple of months I get bored very easily, right now I'm into Japanese electronic music, specially videogame soundtracks, I highly recommend the soundtracks of Dodonpachi Daifukkatsu, Mushihimesama Futari and Death Smiles , just in case anyone cares.

My musical tastes run the gamut. I had formal guitar & music theory lessons when I was young, and my teacher always made it a point of knowing what music I was listening to. She would give me practice pieces that I at first might have thought, "this sucks!" but after a time, I would realize where "this band" or "that band" got it's inspiration.

Good music is good music, regardless of the genre.

So, in no particular order and in no all-inclusive:

Dick Clark (great guitarist and banjoist)
Mason Williams
Joe Bonamassa (met him in San Diego. was outside chatting and smoking with his basist waiting for the doors to open, but didn't know he was the basist until we met the band before the show)
KISS
Metallica (pre-Black album)
Megadeth (anything "Risk" and back. Saw them in concert 6 times, two of those in a 2 month period, and another months after)
Manowar (Eric Adams' voice is just absolutely amazing)
King Diamond/Mercyful Fate
Helloween
Judas Priest (after Rob revealed he was homosexual, certains songs took on a whole new meaning)
Avett Brothers
Louis XIV
Alan Parsons Project (I wore out "Tales of Mystery and Imagination")
Dave Matthews (saw him in concert
Bob Dylan
Anthrax
Michael Franti & Spearhead
Pearl Jam ( & Eddie Veder solo material)
Sound Garden
Amon Amarth
Iced Earth
Rammstein (anything in German sounds angry and agressive)
Tommy Emamanuel
Bloodhound Gang
The Eagles
T-Rex
The Ventures
Slayer
Iron Maiden
Joe Satriani
SRV
The Pixies
Helmet

the list goes on and on, but from what I listed above (hey, it could have been MUCH longer), you can bet that another band in the same genre is also on my list.

I have a bit of a fetish at the moment for the music of Richard Wagner.

I am a bit fixated on Tristan and Isolde, and the Ring Opera's.

During my recent travels I visited Neuschwanstein Castle in Germany, which is the one Ludwig the Second built and dedicated to Wagner; and I enjoyed looking at the murals of the great German mythical stories Wagner used to populate his operas.

I like titanic music at the moment, the sort of music that makes the hair on your neck stand up and reveals a vision of greatness.

Those stories are great and Wagner was someone who was capable of giving those heroes, those giants, a music which compliments and unveils them.

I am also listening to 'West Side Soul' by Magic Sam, which makes me feel good.

Pretty much all of the metal and rock bands I'm into have already been listed, so I'll stick to classical.

Quite a few people have mentioned that they like classical, and some have listed excellent composers, but I haven't seen anyone list any actual works. Since the general inclination here seems to be towards metal, I'll list some of my favorite, darker works.

Also, being a string player, the vast majority of my preferences are for string pieces, so if you can't stand the violin and it's relatives, go ahead and ignore this.

First, my all time favorite is Prokofiev's cello sonata, op.119 in C. Barbara Switalska has an excellent performance of it on youtube, though my favorite is still Yo-yo Ma's interpretation.

Also worth listening to;
Shostakovich - Violin concerto op.99
Dvorak - Cello Concerto in b minor op.104
Bruch - Romanze for Viola and orchestra in F
Mendelssohn - Hebrides Overture op.26
Beethoven - Egmont Overture op.84
Tchaikovsky - Slavischer Marsch
Vivaldi - "Summer" From the Four Seasons, op.8
Bach - Suite for unaccompanied cello no.3, bwv1009 - Prelude
Mozart - Symphony no.35 "Haffner"
Chopin - Prelude op28 no. 15 "Raindrop"
Whitacre - Cloudburst
Barber - Overture to "The School for Scandal"

Enjoy!

Here is 4 of my favorites, every one of them is a bit from different music style and genre.

1.
My absolute favorite is Norwegian black metal band 'Gorgoroth'. Band is from Bergen, the second largest city in Norway. The band’s first studio album was 'Pentagram' released in 1994, but I'm a bit addicted to their two last studio albums: 'Ad Majorem Sathanas Gloriam' (2006) and 'Quantos Possunt ad Satanitatem Trahunt' (2009). My favorite song is 'Satan-Prometheus'. I'm so impatient to hear and maybe even be in the concert of Gorgoroth new work 'Under the Sign of Hell 2011'.

2.
Second place is for 'Therion'. They were last autumn in Latvia and played in my favorite music club - melnā piektdiena. (http://www.melnapiektdiena.lv/) The club is easy to be found, when you are in Riga, it is located near the main street of the capital… I was on ‘Therion’ concert with my best friends. Therion is amazing Swedish Swedish symphonic metal band already from 1987 and is located in Upplands Väsby. My favorite song is ‘Harlequin’ from my favorite disc ‘Sintra Ahra ‘.

3.
Third is ‘Dimmu Borgir’… Even my signature here in ‘the 600 club’ is derived from my band’s favorite studio album ‘In Sorte Diaboli’… I’ve all studio discs and I’ve all songs even in my mobile… I was in May with 2 my friends in Oslo Spectrum (in Norway) to ‘Dimmu Borgir’ concert, where they gave concert together with Oslo symphonic orchestra and . It was brilliant!

4.
… And of course ‘Marilyn Manson’! Maybe he and plays a bit different music, but I’ve all studios albums and even singles from Marilyn Manson. I enjoyed his great talent many years. I started to listen to him, when I was teenager and sometimes I remember my addiction to his lyrics.

Of course I listen and enjoy other music as well…

It's hard to write it all down, but a bit of fun trying, so here goes.

I have a varied listening range, anything form Bjork, to Immortal, but my passion is for rhythm and blues, rock n roll, rockabilly, blues, doo wop, gospel, traditional jazz, hillbilly, big band, New Orleans jazz, basically anything rockin'! Love boogie woogie and real rock n roll.

Notable mentions:

Ray Charles,
Emperor,
Less than jake
the dominoes
amos milburn
Mahalia Jackson
Johnny Guitar Watson
Big J McNeely
Jackie Wilson
Hank Williams
The Robins
Johnny Horton
Little Richard
Johnny Otis
Johhny Burnette

Basically all the sun records artists.

and so on...

Does any one here get in to any of this type of stuff?

I love any music that is of a pure remnant and well polished- many different genres, including-
Classic Rock
Metal (Death, Viking)
Industrial
Trance (Psytrance, Anthem)
Breaks
Punk
Ska
Jazz (Smooth, Bebop)
West Coast Rap
Some R and B
Various Instrumental (Ambient, Art of Noise)

My favorites in recent years are Ministry, Static X, KMFDM, Prodigy, Combichrist, Soulfly, Slipknot and any kick ass metal bands or Industrial bands. Tenacity is my tastebuds lately...

Country whines too much so I mostly dont like that except a little Willie Nelson or Johnny Cash.

So much music is commercialized and the art of laying down a track with gifted lyrics using mysticism has been watered down in the creation of some genres. Pop synth, sure Uncle Al Jourgensen was and still is the shit- even have a new album on the way AGAIN! But pop in general had its splash in the 80s and too many fucking pussies are on the mic ruining music.

First and foremost, I like classical music. I find composers ranging from Shostakovich to Wagner evoke powerful emotions. I also like blues. Howlin' Wolf is probably my favorite. Crooners like Frank Sinatra. The ragtime of Scott Joplin is appealing. That may stem from a "player piano" my grnadfather had in his parlor. A lot of the aforementioned groups appeal to me. I also like the raw anger of punk rock. I have a pretty wide range of tunes in my collection. It all depends on mood.

Ditto goes for “If I Was Your Vampire” from Eat Me Drink Me and “Running to the Edge of the World” from The High End of Low. EMDM’s “Heart-Shaped Glasses,” on the other hand, did nothing for me.

I think his latest album, Born Villain, is his most solid effort in more than a decade. “Hey, Cruel World” is a hell of an opener, and “No Reflection” sounds great blasting from my car speakers. I just wish he’d bring back Pogo. Manson, Twiggy and Pogo always seemed to me like the core of the band.

What kind of music am I? Listing artists just can't do justice to how important music is to my life.

Sometimes I'm chiptune music blaring out of shitty speakers accompanying a primitive fighting game.

Sometimes I'm three power chords and a distortion pedal.

Sometimes I'm a lone bluesman playing from his heart.

Sometimes I'm a Wagnerian score and a riding adventurer.

Here are a few songs I am listening to at the moment. Can’t pick a favourite at the moment, but maybe Slice of Heaven by Dave Dobbyn would be near the top.

Baker Street by Gerry Rafferty

Born to be Wild by Steppenwolf

I thought I might post a few more songs, as I am listening to a lot of music at the moment.

Warning! Warning! There is no black metal in this lot, nor are there any satanic imagery/lyrics either.

Also most of this is for the so called oldies like me, beware youngsters.

I Fought the Law by the Clash

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4-1Ihwt48EM

Transmission by Joy Division

I think this is my favourite Joy Division song. I like the studio version more than the live version, but I really like that dance style of Ian Curtis and I always found this band interesting to watch live so ...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ZwMs2fLoVE

Charlotte Sometimes by the Cure

This is probably my favourite Cure song along with Primary. The film clip is pretty ordinary, but it’s funny to look at Robert Smith and Lol Tolhurst and how young they were then. I saw the Cure years ago and thought it was probably the best show I have ever seen.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4KeII31qyck

Wonderwall by Oasis

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6hzrDeceEKc

Alison by Elvis Costello

I can’t resist putting this one in here. I like this good stuff.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C9GlC9GyF4Y

P.S. was going to put in the Smiths but thought that was going a bit too far

I would like to share (what I consider) an absolutely wonderful song by Alan Parsons - feat David Gilmore(of Pink Floyd) and Shpongle. This is the first track of Alan Parsons 4th solo album Valid Path(2004)

Return to Tunguska - Alan Parsons feat David Gilmore and Shpongle

This one has my favorite audio engineer (Alan Parsons) my favorite Guitarist (David Gilmore) and my favorite electronic artist (shpongle) all wrapped up in a nice neat package.

You started me thinking of David Parsons, whose Maha Puja is a mystical, dreamlike flight over the Himalayas to a secluded Shangri-la monastery of chanting maniac monks. Great magical working music if you're in this kind of meta-mood.

I am currently doing some government work which touches upon Atlantis, and for the proper inspiration looked around for appropriate thematic music. Disney's Atlantis the Lost Empire is too "soundtracky" and has what I would call cheaply-dramatic moments, but David Arkenstone really did a nice job with his Atlantis. It's an entire "musical story" of glorious sound-pictures; here's just one of them of the great Tower of Light whose radiance illuminates the entire island.

^I've never heard of David Arkenstone. That was very nice.

I haven't been listening to a lot of music lately, for some reason. But when I do, I've been listening to the work of Soviet/Russian composer Alfred Schnittke (1934-98). For example:

Symphony No . 1;

Violin Concerto No. 3;

Piano Quintet;

String Quartet No. 3.

To the best of my knowledge, there's nothing Satanic about Schnittke and his music, though he did compose a Faust Cantata which he later incorporated into an opera, Historia von D. Johann Fausten:

Satango!

He and his wife Diane have done some really breathtaking stuff in the "New Age" genre. YouTube has a number of examples, including from his Egypt and Rainforest albums. He also took a very nice whirl at a LOTR album before the Jackson series of movies [he looks rather like a big Hobbit himself.]

While we're on the subject of Egypt, meet James Asher. I first ran into his music at the Al Masri in San Francisco, where the dancers will really boil your blood while you're enjoying delectable dishes. What the website doesn't tell you is that Hatem, before coming over here, was a General in the Egyptian Special Forces, which is how we met. ;\)

I really love Brent Lewis. There aren't examples of his best work (Anything from The Primitive Truth on youtube but HERE's the best one on there that I could find.

Lewis is a student of drumming. He travels the world and learns from different cultures etc. I like The Primitive Truth best because it's all just drums... in many of his other albums he mixes in other music which still sounds cool but the solo stuff allows you to really focus on the drums. There's really one song that embodies what it is I love in music. Like many here, there's no particular genre or genres that embody what I like. Rather, I love music from any genre that has stood the test of time, that has lasted as good. Popular music is that which is appealing to a particular time's sensibilities: good music is that which can be appreciated in any time or place. I listen to more older music than newer music, and I feel strangely old, given my age, when I hear the radio top 40 on at a public location and think, "what the hell are the kids these days listening to?"

The bands I love are usually those that are versatile, where many of their songs are significantly different. A band that can pull of a compelling blues song, a compelling hard rock song, a compelling heartbreak song, and a compelling country song will appeal to me a lot more than a band that's unidimensional.

Funny, Doc, my 16 year old daughter is just starting to discover Grace Slick. She's fairly advanced in her guitar lessons and calls the 60's "something else".

There is hope for the future... just letting you know!

This one is for the Dr.

This song always reminds me of that scene with Acosta and Raoul Duke from the book about the search for the American dream.

Clearly Grace Slick was a legendary good looking singing babe.

Most people don't know that "Rabbit" dates all the way back to the pre-JA Great Society in 1965, where Grace Wing got started before she joined the Airplane. Here it is in that earliest version, recorded at the Matrix on Fillmore Street in S.F. The Matrix is still here, but 100% remodeled from the original: right across the street from the Six Gallery (gone today, but there's a memorial plaque to Ginsberg & "Howl" on the sidewalk). Back then the Matrix was pretty creaky - my mom bought it from Marty Balin for tax purposes, and I spent many an afternoon patching rain leaks on the roof. I finally sold it to the present owners in 1985. It was also the launching pad for Big Brother & the Holding Co. (Janis Joplin).

Over the years "Rabbit" became a signature song, of course, along with "Somebody to Love". I remember Grace getting ready to sing it at the Santa Barbara Bowl in 1975 and pre-warning the audience (most of whom were high as kites) to not sing it with her "because you'll just fuck it up".

By 1995 "Rabbit" had evolved to such a classic that no one bothered to keep it "pure" anymore.

Wonderful cover! If you enjoy Fleet Foxes, give Mimicking Birds a listen. Preferably "New Doomsday".

Let's see,

Tonight I listened to some Diablo Swing Orchestra to get my blood pumping after a day of spec reading.

Then it was a brief trip into Styleistics land.

Then some Steve Miller Band SpaceIntro/FlylikeanEagle/Etc.

I met Steve Miller in a guitar shop once. Very cool dude.

GWAR. I love me some GWAR - campy as all hell, but I dig 'm - even their oddball carnival of chaos stuff.

IWrestledABearOnce.
RetardOBot.

Anything with a gimmick, really.

Aside from that I'm pretty much all over the map - goa trance, various electronic artists, some Hip Hop, even broken clocks are right twice a day.

I'd like to sound "cultured" and say classical and jazz, but really I don't necessarily "listen" to it so much as I put it on for background on lazy rainy afternoons.

Mega death

Slayer

Black Sabbath

Mozart

A lot of eighties rock. I'll pretty much listen to anything that has a nice melody too. I cant believe how plants respond to classical music. My indoor herb Aerogarden is thriving better since I put a radio in there and put it on a classical radio station.

I used to play a lot of jazz in school(1999 musicianship award after just blowing a trumpet for one year) so I can't stand it now. Its annoying to me for some reason. I don't mind playing it but cant stand to listening to it.

Though I like a wide range of music: blues, jazz, hardcore, etc, my declared favorites depend on the situation or mood. Soul Fly and Richard Wagner cover a lot of the bases.

As for your plants liking music there is a glaring lack of data on that, or at least I have not found any. It may have more to do with your own mood in relation to the music where the level of care you give them coincides with it.

Devo! :p thanks for the ear-worm... yeah - anything with a "gimmick" - prime example. The Stray Cats too have a sort of gimmick that I find catchy. When it comes to music the message is often the medium, I'm a sucker for that sorta thing.

Oh, also polkadot cadaver: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A2r4HE29qSs

and Crystal Castles: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vStjmYxetY0

anything left-feild odd ball type stuff.

my favorite though (aside from GWAR, who I'm pretty sure is about to hang it up soon) is IWAB

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hA__eBQAVVg

basically tongue-in-cheek weirdO rock - whenever "artist" means a lil more than just the people playing the music. \:D

Polkadot Cadaver is a rebranding of Dog Fashion Disco, one of my all time favorite bands.

If you like stuff like DFD and Mr. Bungle I would really recommend Idiot Flesh. They started the same time as Bungle doing something similar but their style is much more dramatic and thematic.

I have been really into Dodheimsgard lately. I didn't really appreciate Supervillain Outcast when it came out but it has now grown on me.

k' now I am utterly fixated. For all the odd-ball things I'm into I definitely missed out on this one. This shit is... just plain awesome. Oh sure I get a ton of "you might like this" and usually I'm like "yeah, sure that's cool" but every so often a suggestion really perks the ears. This is one of them. When I say thanks, I definitely mean it - straight-up awesomesauce - Idiot Flesh.

Well thank you very much Mistress B, all those years of living in blissful ignorance blown away in a matter of minutes & all thanks to you.

I've not listened to Devo for maybe 30 years & your post reminded me of them; Whip it Up was one of my favourite tracks though I seem to have recalled it in my head very differently to how it actually is.............just listened to it again & it's terrible! Very, very dissapointed!

It did get me thinking about other tracks from the day so I downloaded Werewolves of London by Excitable Boy & I'm afraid the end result is the same.

From the day I still listen to Chelsea, Slaughter & The Dogs, ATV, Buzzcocks along with many more but my favourite was & still is Eater......closely followed by The Damned

I've quite an eccelectic iPod as it's got all those above on it, loads of David Bowie, Lou Reed & Iggy Pop, a smattering of Duran Duran & Spandau Ballet, Green Day, The Strokes. I've a number of full operas, highlighted operas & collections of arias; a whole load of Vespers mostly by Rackmaninov & even a collection of Christmas Carols sung by King's College Cambridge Choir.

So plent of choice depending on my mood.

I used to be exclusively into underground music, in particular punk and metal. Oddly enough, blues was a favorite too -- I could never get a band going long enough to do anything, so I would play rythem for my brother at coffee houses and open mics. It was pretty funny. Here's my brother, some long-haired hippy asshole and me, some dead-beat waste case with a twelve inch blue mohawk. Going to play shows with him, I'd hear all sorts of great musicians, some original, but mostly covers of blues and early Americana rock.

At that point, I started listening to anything I thought sounded cool. Today, that includes a spectrum from Old Crow Medicine Show to Wiz Khalifa. Not to mention, damn near all of the other punks were hypocrites and losers anyway, so I got the hell out of that scene after years of being involved.

The vast majority of music I listen to most of the time is deathmetal, deathcore, slamming brutal death etc. My all time favorite bands are: Slipknot, I Declare War, Parasitic Ejaculation, Rose Funeral, Extermination Dismemberment, Aborted, and much more.

I listen to all kinds of shit, but The Rolling Stones are and have always been my favorite band. Right up there with The Ramones, Iron Maiden, Slayer, Tom Waits, and what ever else I get stuck on. I have been on a big black metal kick lately, preceded immediately by a long stretch of hip hop and r&b. For those of you who were into Polkadot Cadaver and Idiot Flesh, I would suggest checking out Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, Deep Turtle, Deverova Chyba, Plaid Retina, Melt Banana, and a whole shit ton of other wacky experimental music that I could suggest if anyone is interested.

Classic Rock: Rolling Stones (Sympathy for you know who).

Hard Rock: AC/DC (Angus!!).

Newer Stuff??: Queens of the Stone Age ("No One Knows" one of best songs ever - especially with Dave Grohl on drums).

Country: Hank Williams (Ain't nobody can touch 'im).

Classical Music: Mozart (Genius).

Gospel: Gaither Vocal Band (That ole' time religion).

Blue Grass: Anything with Chris Thiele - Damn!!!

Soul: James Brown (Father of funk).

Pop: Taylor Swift (sorry - she's actually pretty good).

Blues/R&B: Robert Johnson (allegedly sold his you know what to you know who).

I have been listening to a lot of American music lately.

I personally think the relationship Atlantic records forged with Stax records in Memphis, Tennessee and Fame and the MSSS in Muscle Shoals, Alabama was the highest point in American music.

A close follow up would be the music made in Laurel Canyon and Haight Ashbury during those heady ole days.

Here are some samples. If you are a Cliche Satanist, then don't listen as this is hippy feel good music. Beware.

Land of a Thousand Dances by Wilson Pickett

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3mz_EXHKGHs

This Pickett record was recorded at Fame Records in Muscle Shoals with Rick Hall producing and Jerry Wexler present.

Sweet Soul Music by Arthur Conley

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=grE0lwTsSPg

Wooden Ships by Crosby, Stills and Nash

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jv7FNyckr7w

A Laurel Canyon classic from the first album.

New Speedway Boogie by Grateful Dead

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_nOpJMQ3-VE&list=PLsndoOIvPwpa_8P1pOUY5B4osFPn4LImi&index=4

I would also include Phil Spector's work, stuff made at Chess records and Sun records. I'm not as into rural blues and country at the moment.

I have always wanted to record a super heavy stoner metal version of "New Speedway Boogie." That whole record, along with "Let it Bleed," and "Who's Next," and possibly Jefferson Airplane's "Volunteers" document the hammering in of the final nails in the coffin of the dreams of peace and love.

Yes Let it Bleed is the album which I think best represents the passing of that dream. I would also include There's a Riot Goin On by Sly and the Family Stone.

Riot was such a different record than Stand.

In the same vein, I think Funkadelic's "America Eats it's Young" was a break-through record.

And for more of my old hippy bullshit, Bruce Springsteen's "Greetings From Asbury Park, New Jersey" has some great tunes on it, and also a fair bit of "Satanic" subject content. Lots of doomed anti-heroes, visceral bestial pleasure, carnivalesque street-hustlers, and the Devil himself even helps old Bruce get away from the cops in "It's Hard To Be A Saint in The City." If LaVey could have stood the way the women at the concert were dressed, he might have been a fan of the music.

80's rock, underground and a few mainstream bands. The mainstream bands I like are Disturbed, Linkin Park, Static-X, Breaking Benjamin, and Skillet. Other than that I don't listen to much else. I do like some classic rock. I love the Animals, Americans, Bobbie Day, The Beatles, and Ben E. King just to name a few.

O.K., so here's a funny music story ...

Nikolas Schreck (Zeena's husband) considers himself a "music authority", including the film music of Walt Disney.

So I bought a copy of Heigh Ho Mozart and its companion album Bibbidi Bobbidi Bach (of both of which he was unaware). I sent him some audio clips from both on a cassette, and said, "Are you aware that Walt Disney stole almost all of his famous music from obscure works of the Old Masters?"

Well, I thought Nik was going to have a stroke. His hero exposed as a serial plagiarist!

I let him apoplex about this for about a week, then said, "Smile, you're on Candid Camera!" and fessed up.

It's a good job he & Zeena were living 500 miles away in L.A. at the time, or I think he'd have come over and killed me. Zeena said she bit her lip and kept an absolute poker face.

Of course the converse was true: those albums are very skillful renditions of famous Disney music as various Masters might have composed them. Click on some clips on the Amazon pages.

Not to mention that this is another illustration of the technique of "misdirection" in Lesser Black Magic & stage magic.

You mentioned something along these lines in some other post – one that alludes to “If the human mind was simple enough to understand, we'd be too simple to understand it”

This is true to such an extent that, at least in my redunkulous world-view, you have to fuck with human minds in order to better understand how they work. You have to fuzz them - treat them exactly like computers.

This includes willingly fucking with your own (computer/psyche) – be it chemically or just going out there and shouting “fire” in a crowded movie theatre.

I suspect that was a common theme among “satanists” - be it boyd rice, or Anton LaVey, and I secretly suspect gilmore – you as well... but I'm more of the opinion that satan (allegorically speaking) was something closer to loki than of apophysis (“there's funny, and there's flat out 'dick'” / “if you are a dick, you'd better be funny”)

Shit! The merry pranksters, even.

We're fucked on all sides w/r/t to the serious nature of drone warfare and the patriot act... but one can never defeat teh lulz. There's only two masks that can be of any avail to the human psyche in the grander scheme of things.

Comedy and tragedy. (eat, drink, be merry, for tomorrow___ fuck tomorrow)

It's when it gets too fucking serious that I cringe and go “ok, this probably won't end much better than the sanctimonious bullshit 'we' started up against in the first place”

On that note, though, aardvarks are fucking hysterical – second only the duck-billed-platipus... and on a serious note – it is our seriousness that defeats us :|

Sure, words are bullet proof, but laughter is contagious.

My 3 favorite genres of music are heavy metal (all kinds of metal - though a lot of power metal lately), ska (again, all kinds of ska, from original, old school ska to 3rd wave ska-punk) and 1990s era country music. I cannot really narrow down a favorite band/singer, but some are: The Offspring, Static-X, Suburban Legends, Reel Big Fish, Less Than Jake, Sabaton, Def Leppard, Metallica, Garth Brooks, Tim McGraw, Manowar, Megadeth, etc.

Today I rediscovered the version of The Band's "The Weight" recorded by Aretha Franklin at Muscle Shoals during the period when Duane Allman was a studio musician there. That version really should be considered the definitive version. I always found The Band to be too bland and middle of the road for my taste. In fact, even Joe Cocker's version of "The Weight" is far superior to the original. But, for my money anyhow, you can't top the version recorded by Aretha and Duane.

I am a big fan of the guitar, and most of the music I like best features guitar.

I can’t play the guitar to save my life, but love great guitar players and guitars in general. I like old Fenders and Gibson’s.

I never got the chance to watch Jimi Hendrix or Jimmy Page play live, but I did see Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton live.

Here are a few links for people like me who love guitar. I think that the guitar is a slowly dying relic, something not used too much in contemporary popular music. I may be wrong though.
