Well this seems to be a pretty good list of metal bands as well as some other stuff. I personally like Killswitch Engage, In Flames, As I Lay Dying, and of course Avenged Sevenfold. If you're interested in instrumental music, Blue Sky Black Death is a production duo in LA that has forged a genre of music somewhere between hip hop, classical, and believe me when you hear it you'll understand. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g3ww8LoTLp0&feature=related
Other than those bands, 30 Seconds to Mars, and Flyleaf, and maybe DevilDriver and Underoath. Otherwise I listen to rap and Linkin Park, maybe Rage Against The Machine.

I have a wide taste in music but the base was pretty much always metal. Some of my favorite artists are given below:
[Metal] - Megadeth, Mastodon, Anaal Nathrakh, Morbid Angel, Machine Head etc.
[Rock] - Muse, Guns N Roses, Alice in Chains, Rush etc.
[Folk/neofolk etc] - Clannad, Triarii, Rome etc.
[Country] - Garth Brooks, Johnny Cash etc.
[Jazz/fusion] - Miles Davis, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Weather report, Esbjörn svensson trio (E.S.T.) etc.
[Scores] - I love alot of the Danny Elfman and Hans Zimmer scores. The score from "the fountain" may be my favorite though but I cant remember who wrote it at the top of my head.
[Pop] - The Beatles, Amy MacDonald etc.
I did just start to get into opera and I do love "die zaubtflöte" (one of the all time classics of course) and I also started to explore electronical music. It has so many subgenres but I believe its some kind of trance music that appeals to me the most.

Nice to see what all of you are into.
I'll just give you a sample of what shakes my headset these days. Being from that neck of the woods, I'm prone to listen to Norwegian black metal such as Dimmu Borgir, Satyricon, Immortal, and to a lesser degree Enslaved. Lately, I've also had a taste of Windir. Worthy Swedish bands are, among others, In Flames and Dissection. Ah, how I do love the hoarse harmonics of Maha-Kali from Reinkaos.
Cradle of Filth, At the Gates, Children of Bodom, Stormlord has also gotten alot of space on playlists lately. Among the classic, I would list Metallica, Slayer and Iron Maiden. Although I don't listen to them all that much these days, they sure as hell had their influence on me. System of a Down is one the more genuinely innovative bands, but again they have been replaced in the harsh competition on my playlist.
I could go on for awhile with the metal, but I probably should mention some of the things I like from other genres. Queen and Depeche Mode are sort of cornerstones of my music taste. I listened a lot to these as a teenager, along with a surprising amount of classical music. When I listen to non-metal today it is likely to include Depeche Mode, Madrugada, Yello, and Muse.

When it comes to classical music and opera, I'm listen to Wagner, Beethoven, Bach and Mozart. In my teens, Wagner got the most play-time. I still like it pompous, it seems :). Just now I had a touch of Borodin put in between Madrugada and Yello.

Like you, I'm quite eclectic in my musical tastes.
This may get me banned, but I can't stand metal bands whose singers sound like cookie monster. Beyond that, I like tons of different stuff.
I like big jazz era bands, Cab Calloway & the like.
I like crooners a lot, have a ton of Dean Martin & Sinatra.
I like Polynesian Pop\50's & 60's tropical\exotica like Martin Denny + Les Baxter + Arthur Lyman
I like new-ish Halloween themed swing like the Moon Rays (Swingin' at the Seance) old surf type music, etc
There is a lot of Country I like but most of it is old like Hank Williams Sr, Waylon Jennings, Roger Miller etc
I LOVE the Squirrel Nut Zippers.
I like metal.. Metallica is one of my favorite bands. I also love 80's style metal like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and the like.
Right now I like the fusion of metal & opera like the first Nightwish album and these guys:
Diablo Swing Orchestra.
That's it, too much to list really.

My music choices vary from day to day. Classical, classic rock, hard rock, southern rock, soft rock, pop, industrial/grunge, some rap (nothing hard gangster type), and some country.
Here are some in my collection. I know, I know....stuck in the past but some of these are just too great to give up. Ok, a lot of these!
Bach Beethoven MoZart Handel Lerue Delashay (some of the most intense goth/classical you can imagine) Jackyl Rob Zombie Metallica (their S&M CD locked me in with the San Francisco Orchestra playing with them) Whitey Ford Queen Van Halen Sammy Hagar Nine in Nails Linkin Park Collective Soul Match Box 20 Kiss 3 Days Grace 3 Door Down Nickleback Kid Rock Uncle Kracker Jay-Z Pink Evanescence Seether Breaking Benjamin Korn Mudvayne Tool Creedence Clearwater Revival Eagles (nothing better than hearing Hotel California live to set a witchy mood) Garth Brooks Travis Tritt Brooks and Dunn Lynyrd Skynyrd Pink Floyd Aerosmith Creed Marilyn Manson Godsmack Meat Loaf Velvet Revolver Def Leppard Lady Gaga Triumph (One of the most INCREDIBLE concerts even to this day!) Bad Company ZZ Top Bon Jovi Phil Collins Peter Gabriel Genesis Trans Siberian Orchestra Rolling Stones Led Zepplin Christina Aguilera Foo Fighters Green Day
And these are the one's I can remember without looking at our collection of CD's and the music I've got on my computer. There's some big bands on here, along with some really good oldies but it's late and I'm finally pooped. Hope you've found something else to add to your collection, cause so far in this thread there's been a ton of good music suggested.

Oh man, there's so much music I like I don't know where to start. Or when to stop.
I couldn't have said any better. The music I listen to mainly depends on the mood of the moment. I enjoy (in no particular order): 60s and 70s rock (Led Zeppelin and not so famous bands like Sweet Smoke, Loudest Whisper, Tennent & Morrison), classical music (Mendelssohn, Bartók, Brahms, Debussy, Malher, Saint-Saëns), blues (from Robert Johnson to Derek & The Dominos to Roadhouse) and, well, some heavier things like The Stooges, old Marilyn Manson stuff, Dimmu Borgir or anything with big guitars.
I must admit, the older I get, the softer the music :]

Being a kid in the '70's I have a real fondness for that era in music. I love '70's R&B/Soul. But I'm a huge fan of '70's guitar rock. It's what shaped my own style in starting as a musician. There are too many to list but here are my main influences:
KISS Elivs Presley AC/DC Cheap Trick Ted Nugent The Who The Stones Led Zep Foreigner Thin Lizzy Prince Queen Parliament
I have to say, I never really cared for The Stones until I heard them in concert. The age range at the concert was incredible, from kids around 10 and 11 on up to guys with walkers. They rocked the stage and the Collisium rocked the entire concert as everyone sang to every song. They earned my respect that night.
Then again, Kiss seems to do that any given show. lol

I listen to too many things. I'll throw out some genres first.
Black Metal (1349, Satyricon, Tsjuder, Absurd, Enslaved) DSBM (Thy Light, Life is Pain, Morthond) Death Metal (Grave, Nile, Entombed, CC) Melodeath (In Flames, At the Gates, Mors Principium Est) Jazz (all types) Blues Punk (Oi, Pogo, Crust, Power Violence, Grindcore, Hardcore) Classical Gothic Rock/Metal (Graveworm, Theatre of Tragedy) Folk (Of the Wand and the Moon, DMB [that counts]) Electronic (DJ Mystic, Lady Gaga) Industrial (Ministry) NDH (Eisbrecher, Rammstein, Oomph!) EBM (Early Oomph!, and other things I can't be bothered to remember) Power Metal (Iron Maiden, DragonForce, Manowar) Doom Metal (Sahg, My Dying Bride, Anathema, Paradise Lost) Funeral Doom (Funeral, Doom:VS, Shape of Despair) Classic Rock (Motley Crue, AC/DC, Deep Purple) Technical Death Jazz (Cynic)
That should give a tiny bit of an idea.

Music that stands for freedom and expression. That be anything. It's not the music itself, it's the message.
The music video is almost as equal to the song for me to like the song, with a few exceptions such "A Benediction" by Winterpills.
I don't have a hatred for most music, except the type were it's not really from the creator's mind but from the company that person was working for.

Dr. Aquino, I'm sure you forgot 'one' other artist . . . the infamously diabolical 'Black Muse Element'. I assuredly haven't overlooked Black Muse or many talented individual Setian artists, but here was just citing commercial works.
Arthur Lyman's 'TABOO' was one of my first recordings I ever dug, my dad had it, along with a bunch of swing, also cool. Those exotic grooves and sound effects, to this day, influence my recordings and probably directed me towards the musical path I have taken. Ah yes, the magical working that inspired thousands of nationwide backyard tiki parties in the '50s. Lyman later came out with Taboo 2, whose shrunken-head cover scandalized the Great Unwashed as much as the infamous Beatles' "butcher cover". At least with T2 you have the option of folding the cover over to reveal a more tikiloungey one.
The chump-change world of Satanism has nothing on the hideous, blasphemous, and forbidden Tiki Cult, which even now plots to subvert world governments, replace all opium, heroin, & pot with tiki drinks, and convince all young girls to remain virgins until they can be properly tossed into volcanos. [This is admittedly getting more complicated in today's multiwhateversexual culture.]
I also have a weak spot for really hick country music - you know, the sort where the singer can't figure out whom he loves more - his dead girlfriend, his pig, or his coon dog. Here's a sample. Lilith generally throws me out of the house when I play this stuff.

Sometimes, though, I get the distinct impression I'm listening to someone who isn't in it for the music, but rather the fat paycheck or a sense of worth obtained through posturing and pandering to a sycophantic audience.
I really like the way you've worded this.
It explains why I avoid most popular music, including populist classical (Mendelssohn, anything Russian except Rimsky-Korsakov).
I'm mostly a classical listener, but I love classic metal (Maiden, Priest) and old school death metal and black metal.
Also I have a weakness for some ambient like Tangerine Dream, Biosphere, Troum, Autechre and Maeror Tri.

I like that list. I'll add:
Megadeth Astral Projection early Metallica Dune Scorpions Accept Synaesthesia Michael and Janet Jackson Prong Lacuna Coil Chopin
You just made me take one hell of a Double Take! Michael and Janet Jackson? Never would have expected that at all.

Why not? They make good music.
I also like Earth, Wind & Fire, Rick James, David Bowie, Robert Plant (including post-Zep), Van Morrison, America, Run DMC, Public Enemy, Grim Reaper, Dusty Springfield, Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Abba, Al Green, Frank Sinatra, the Conan soundtrack (Basil Pouledoris), Rob Zombie, and lots of classical music (but I cannot identify them by tune yet).
But I never liked Aerosmith, and I'm totally burned on AC/DC - if I never hear Back In Black again, it'll be too soon.
And of course all country music just sucks. Except for maybe Hank Williams, Sr.
How many takes is that?

Ok...gotta go there....LMFAO! Nah, none of those surprised me. I guess those two just wasn't something I was expecting. I know how you feel about AC/DC, and quite frankly, after my younger sister replayed Thriller at least 100 times a day when I was a teen, I feel the same way about Michael Jackson. Janet had a couple of decent teen songs, but beyond that, I couldn't really get into her music.
I have to tell you, I like David Bowie's music, especially some of the stuff he put out for the movie Labyrinth, his Little Drummer Boy (Peace on Earth) medley that he did with Bing Crosby, and even his duet Dancing in the Streets with Mick Jagger . BTW, one of the BEST concerts I ever saw was the Stones, who at the time I really didn't care for at all. They rocked the house for more than 2 1/2 hours and the place was standing and singing right along with them the WHOLE time. To boot, the crowd ranged from 9 year olds (or about that) to guys with walkers that could have passed for my great grandpa at that time. They earned my respect that day.
As for Robert Plant (post-Zep), I liked his music too, until I saw him in concert. The show was extremely short (under an hour total stage time) and what he did to the songs, just completely blew. I wouldn't go to another show of his if it was FREE.

Yeah, two different things. Listen to the music - don't pay attention to concerts, scandals, VH1 exposes, etc. Just listen to the music.
I never cared what anybody did outside the song. Every celebrity has drug stories, sex stories, crime stories, Entertainment Tonight and The Enquirer stories ... Michael Jackson may or may not have been a child molester, I don't care - I don't know him, I'm not voting for him, I just like his music.
How does the saying go? Average people talk about events, great people talk about ideas, small people talk about people.

I know what you mean. I enjoy a good concert, but I was ruined at a young age. 13 and my first rock concert was Kiss, with Queensryche opening for them. I can't even count how many concerts I've been to since then. I've known a few bands and my favorite times where when they would practice in a garage or a basement. I think that's why I've always liked concerts. My favorite concert was Bad Company and Triumph. I've always been a huge fan of both bands and to see them in one show was "It" for me. Triumph had one hell of a light show. I don't care what the latest gossip is about the bands or singers. I just want to enjoy them playing and putting on a good show. If they're having a good time performing, all the better for me!

"Never a horse that couldn't be rode and never a cowboy that couldn't be throwed."
That pretty much covers every man, woman, singer, writer, actor... you name it. People are fickle to be sure, and today's superstars often wind up seeming like the bizarre and grotesque Norma Desmond, mind gone and still performing, coming screen forward and moaning "All right, Mr. DeMille, I'm ready for my close-up," in the 1950 production of HOLLYWOOD BOULEVARD.
EVERYONE has their personal moment of "jumping the shark," when their career is on the downhill slopes. In this case, musicians, especially hugely popular ones, have this moment magnified like a particle in the view of the nuclear powered microscope of fandom. You MUST be better than your last effort... but it MUST be the same. You can't deviate and hurt the fans, because they loved you as that innovative and music-forward rock star that broke them out or their doldrums. But now... stay the same. You belong to US, and our $15.95 for your latest CD gives us godlike powers to condemn you to hell for singing one single note of which we don't approve.
Ricky Nelson sang it best in his song "Garden Party." "If memories were all I sang, I'd rather drive a truck; but it's all right now. I learned my lesson well. You see, you can't please everyone, so you've got to please yourself."
We criticize and condemn those who take the formulaic route in writing and in music and in the graphic arts... where is that boldness? Where is the innovation? Don't you have the guts to do anything different? And then, as soon as they do, we damn them for all eternity on that one result we find disappointing. But at least THEY TRIED! THEY ACTUALLY TRIED! All we did was waste a few bucks on a disc of plastic.
Said it before and it bears repeating. Babe Ruth held not only the record for home runs, but the record for strike outs as well. He TRIED.

All we did was waste a few bucks on a disc of plastic.
During times I was into the gigs and active in the amateur bands who asked me, I noticed there was a certain trend in which most of them tried to be innovative. The problems that occured were: a) They tried and used new sounds to make different numbers, but it didn't appeal to the crowds or the different music labels (even the small ones) to actually bring out a disc from these people. b) they TRIED to be innovative but in the wrong direction. My former group from which I resigned is the perfect example. They try to become famous by being "innovative". But what they understand here is the use of already known sound effects and simply raising the volume on their speakers. Most of the time it is a very crappy sound (even scratching your nails on a chalkboard is more appealing). There was/is a certain understanding in most new bands that to be innovative you have to scream your lungs out of your body so you can't at least speak for a week, only to get that high-pitched sound which resembles a pig to be slaughtered.
The case of b) is one of the cases which occur most. Many new found groups try to combine different sorts of music (I guess the people here are familiar with terms such as "metalcore", "progressive grindcore",...). Sadly enough most of these attempts already exist and the new "sound" they want to create is already existant for ages. So far the innovative part.
I'm currently writing numbers which are a bit more on the odd side. Things such as a combination of Jamaican music with rock, GOA with a slight hint of drum and base,..
Anyway, the last band I would more or less call "innovative" would be Tenacious D. Credits to those who have tried, but sometimes things just sound bad no matter how hard you try.

My point was that it wasn't necessary at all
I know what your point was. Luckily, I care not one bit what you think is necessary or unnecessary.
No big criticism, I was just being a smart ass.
Yes, I know you were being a smart ass. Hence my pointing it out in the post you responded to.

Ahhh...music...one of my favorite subjects. I admire you for being able to organize your tastes into an alphabetized post. I am much too scattered in thought to remember even half of what I love to listen to. I'd be better off trying list genres I am passionate about and then see if I can remember some of my top favorite artists within each.
First off I have to say Rush is my favorite “modern” band, and by modern I mean since the infiltration by the pop culture medium on the human psyche. To me they are their own genre and each individual band member holds an enormous technical influence over me. I play drums bass, guitar and a bit of keys but bass is my true passion. Geddy Lee is the school in which I continue to respectfully study for bass chops. I discovered Rush even before Satanism as a youngster, and to me Neil Peart’s lyrics reflect much of what I consider to be the Ayn Rand-influenced side of LaVey’s writings. Also – the guys in the band admittedly (obviously) challenge each other whenever they write new material in order to stay on top of their game. This is something that dusty old prog-rockers of the same era weren’t consistent in. (Would Rush ever write something equivalent to “Owner of a Lonely Heart”? Even for money?)
Hmmm, now to genres… • Dark Ambient (really enjoying Lycia all over again, these days) • Goth (Death Rock, Post Punk, Neoclassical, Neofolk – Christian Death to Death in June kinda stuff) • Traditional Country (the fun, rebellious stuff from the hills…not Nashville) • Appalachian Bluegrass (again, clearly NOT Nashville) • Glam Rock (NY Dolls, Sweet, Bowie, Wizzard etc, – NOT Poison) • Metal (mostly 80’s “shock” or “horror” Metal –Kind Diamond was a favorite of mine as a lad, along with his Glam Rock predecessor, Alice Cooper) • Classical (piano concertos by the truckload) • Tribal Percussion
That’s a good start, I suppose!

I'm going to be generic and state that I like black metal, death metal, and thrash metal, but one of my loves is German industrial. Industrial and aggrotech get an angry, pulsing, insane beat no other genre can achieve for me

I listen to almost every kind of music: ambient, blues, tango, classical, rock, electronic, soul, reggae, punk, indie rock, lounge, jazz, hip-hop, rap, Mexican folk music (except northern crap), psychobilly, rockabilly, heavy metal, batcave and deathrock, etc. My collection is not very big, I only have 200gb of music, that covers only the "basic" stuff of each genre, I'm not a connoisseur.
My favorite genre changes every couple of months I get bored very easily, right now I'm into Japanese electronic music, specially videogame soundtracks, I highly recommend the soundtracks of Dodonpachi Daifukkatsu, Mushihimesama Futari and Death Smiles , just in case anyone cares.

My musical tastes run the gamut. I had formal guitar & music theory lessons when I was young, and my teacher always made it a point of knowing what music I was listening to. She would give me practice pieces that I at first might have thought, "this sucks!" but after a time, I would realize where "this band" or "that band" got it's inspiration.
Good music is good music, regardless of the genre.
So, in no particular order and in no all-inclusive:
Dick Clark (great guitarist and banjoist) Mason Williams Joe Bonamassa (met him in San Diego. was outside chatting and smoking with his basist waiting for the doors to open, but didn't know he was the basist until we met the band before the show) KISS Metallica (pre-Black album) Megadeth (anything "Risk" and back. Saw them in concert 6 times, two of those in a 2 month period, and another months after) Manowar (Eric Adams' voice is just absolutely amazing) King Diamond/Mercyful Fate Helloween Judas Priest (after Rob revealed he was homosexual, certains songs took on a whole new meaning) Avett Brothers Louis XIV Alan Parsons Project (I wore out "Tales of Mystery and Imagination") Dave Matthews (saw him in concert Bob Dylan Anthrax Michael Franti & Spearhead Pearl Jam ( & Eddie Veder solo material) Sound Garden Amon Amarth Iced Earth Rammstein (anything in German sounds angry and agressive) Tommy Emamanuel Bloodhound Gang The Eagles T-Rex The Ventures Slayer Iron Maiden Joe Satriani SRV The Pixies Helmet
the list goes on and on, but from what I listed above (hey, it could have been MUCH longer), you can bet that another band in the same genre is also on my list.

Pretty much all of the metal and rock bands I'm into have already been listed, so I'll stick to classical.
Quite a few people have mentioned that they like classical, and some have listed excellent composers, but I haven't seen anyone list any actual works. Since the general inclination here seems to be towards metal, I'll list some of my favorite, darker works.
Also, being a string player, the vast majority of my preferences are for string pieces, so if you can't stand the violin and it's relatives, go ahead and ignore this.
First, my all time favorite is Prokofiev's cello sonata, op.119 in C. Barbara Switalska has an excellent performance of it on youtube, though my favorite is still Yo-yo Ma's interpretation.
Also worth listening to; Shostakovich - Violin concerto op.99 Dvorak - Cello Concerto in b minor op.104 Bruch - Romanze for Viola and orchestra in F Mendelssohn - Hebrides Overture op.26 Beethoven - Egmont Overture op.84 Tchaikovsky - Slavischer Marsch Vivaldi - "Summer" From the Four Seasons, op.8 Bach - Suite for unaccompanied cello no.3, bwv1009 - Prelude Mozart - Symphony no.35 "Haffner" Chopin - Prelude op28 no. 15 "Raindrop" Whitacre - Cloudburst Barber - Overture to "The School for Scandal"
Enjoy!

Here is 4 of my favorites, every one of them is a bit from different music style and genre.
1. My absolute favorite is Norwegian black metal band 'Gorgoroth'. Band is from Bergen, the second largest city in Norway. The band’s first studio album was 'Pentagram' released in 1994, but I'm a bit addicted to their two last studio albums: 'Ad Majorem Sathanas Gloriam' (2006) and 'Quantos Possunt ad Satanitatem Trahunt' (2009). My favorite song is 'Satan-Prometheus'. I'm so impatient to hear and maybe even be in the concert of Gorgoroth new work 'Under the Sign of Hell 2011'.
2. Second place is for 'Therion'. They were last autumn in Latvia and played in my favorite music club - melnā piektdiena. (http://www.melnapiektdiena.lv/) The club is easy to be found, when you are in Riga, it is located near the main street of the capital… I was on ‘Therion’ concert with my best friends. Therion is amazing Swedish Swedish symphonic metal band already from 1987 and is located in Upplands Väsby. My favorite song is ‘Harlequin’ from my favorite disc ‘Sintra Ahra ‘.
3. Third is ‘Dimmu Borgir’… Even my signature here in ‘the 600 club’ is derived from my band’s favorite studio album ‘In Sorte Diaboli’… I’ve all studio discs and I’ve all songs even in my mobile… I was in May with 2 my friends in Oslo Spectrum (in Norway) to ‘Dimmu Borgir’ concert, where they gave concert together with Oslo symphonic orchestra and . It was brilliant!
4. … And of course ‘Marilyn Manson’! Maybe he and plays a bit different music, but I’ve all studios albums and even singles from Marilyn Manson. I enjoyed his great talent many years. I started to listen to him, when I was teenager and sometimes I remember my addiction to his lyrics.
Of course I listen and enjoy other music as well…

It's hard to write it all down, but a bit of fun trying, so here goes.
I have a varied listening range, anything form Bjork, to Immortal, but my passion is for rhythm and blues, rock n roll, rockabilly, blues, doo wop, gospel, traditional jazz, hillbilly, big band, New Orleans jazz, basically anything rockin'! Love boogie woogie and real rock n roll.
Notable mentions:
Ray Charles, Emperor, Less than jake the dominoes amos milburn Mahalia Jackson Johnny Guitar Watson Big J McNeely Jackie Wilson Hank Williams The Robins Johnny Horton Little Richard Johnny Otis Johhny Burnette
Basically all the sun records artists.
and so on...
Does any one here get in to any of this type of stuff?

I love any music that is of a pure remnant and well polished- many different genres, including- Classic Rock Metal (Death, Viking) Industrial Trance (Psytrance, Anthem) Breaks Punk Ska Jazz (Smooth, Bebop) West Coast Rap Some R and B Various Instrumental (Ambient, Art of Noise)
My favorites in recent years are Ministry, Static X, KMFDM, Prodigy, Combichrist, Soulfly, Slipknot and any kick ass metal bands or Industrial bands. Tenacity is my tastebuds lately...
Country whines too much so I mostly dont like that except a little Willie Nelson or Johnny Cash.
So much music is commercialized and the art of laying down a track with gifted lyrics using mysticism has been watered down in the creation of some genres. Pop synth, sure Uncle Al Jourgensen was and still is the shit- even have a new album on the way AGAIN! But pop in general had its splash in the 80s and too many fucking pussies are on the mic ruining music.
