I have perused this site a few times and am yet to see a post of this nature, so in my infinite wisdom I have decided to bestow it upon you all, because Im good like that.

Possessions, puerile and fleeting to some, deep and meaningful to others (for the record, I am in the latter camp). Where ever you stand, I’m sure there are nick knack's, oddities and collectables which you desire.

So in this space, I ask you to share your wants and needs...because everybody has a want for things unnecessary.

Oh, and my want is this. \:\)

For over 25 years I wanted to get a custom engraved ring from http://www.heraldica.com, but something always stopped me. Right now it's the price of gold. I also can't make up my mind as to what I would want engraved. Nothing Satanic in this case. I was either thinking about the crest of the old country, or I also lean towards the great seal of the U.S. Would want it in 18k gold what ever it is.

I have a huge obsession with old occult books. I love leather hardbacks. Raised bands on the spine arouse me in ways no woman can. If I were obscenely rich I would make a point of amassing as many leatherbound tomes as possible, as well as paying to have my current personal library rebound in antique-style binding.

We can all dream, I suppose.

What? Like you wouldn't like to have a mass spectrometer.

I work to own what I want it’s a continual thing. If you find yourself wanting something for very long perhaps you are spending too much time wanting and not enough doing.

Wishing, wanting, praying, magical workings mostly a waste of time. Nothing beats doing something directly to reach your goal.

On the unobtainable things I would like, eternal life, the knowledge of the universe and the ability to comprehend it all are tops on my list.

Since I have an exceedingly large and ever-increasing wish list (the karmic lot of academics everywhere, if not humans in general), I'll only mention a few things for which I fiercely hunger at present.

1. Leonhardi Euleri Opera Omnia

At seventy-six handsome quarto volumes and still growing, the definitive scholarly collection of Euler's complete works makes clear that their author, the most prolific mathematician who ever lived*, was a human dynamo of the highest caliber—and it doesn't come cheap. The Series prima alone, which contains only the first thirty volumes, is priced at $4,400 by Birkhäuser, and unless the set is also printed within the United States, the sheer cost of having nine or so dozen pounds of books shipped from Switzerland would put the price far beyond my current means. Perhaps a university grant could be arranged...

2. Kurt Gödel: Collected Works

"Einstein had often told me," wrote Oskar Morgenstern (co-founder of game theory) in a letter, "that in the late years of his life he has continually sought Gödel's company, in order to have discussions with him. Once he said to me that his own work no longer meant much, that he came to the Institute [for Advanced Study] merely um das Privileg zu haben, mit Gödel zu Fuß nach Hause gehen zu dürfen." Gödel is to me one of the most engrossing figures of the modern world—distant, profound, unstable, hypochondriacal, and otherworldly—about whom I have read. The opportunity to absorb the spirit and content of his work at my leisure would be wonderful.

Yes, that's the title. This six-volume set is the largest bound collection of alchemical writings ever published, exceeding Jean-Jacques Manget's Bibliotheca chemica curiosa (thirty-five pieces in which are included in the Theatrum) by a wide margin. It has been made available online under the humorous title of Theatrum Chemicum Electronicum, but who wouldn't prefer a personal set?

Z.

* To any mathematically literate readers who would point out that Paul Erdős is in fact the most prolific mathematician in history, that is also correct. Euler is the most prolific by the number of pages published, while Erdős is the most prolific by the number of papers published.

I have to agree with you. I have old books all over the house, and keep finding things online I want but can't buy yet. Somehow, I think it will be a little while before I can drop 2-3 grand on a single book.

I would like down the road to have a classic type library, paneled walls, built in shelves, a big fireplace, and comfy chairs.

Oh, and a white bear skin rug, but pending that, a brown or black bear one will do.

I want as many musical instruments as I can get my hands on. If I were to get some more cash flow I'd definitely (slowly)nab myself a sitar, erhu, banjo, and a violin.

And call me silly but I've always wanted to put a real human skeleton like you'd see in a highschool science classroom as a conversation piece. My lover and I have a plan to theme our home as the day of the dead, we've kind of got a thing for it.
I've looked around a bit and they seem to run about two thousand dollars so a liiiiiitle out of my price range. But if I were to win the lottery my home would house the living and the dead.

I want it all!

Currently my roommates and I have 3 main things we are all putting money towards: a hot tub for the backyard, a pool table for the garage and a stripper pole for the living room. There are many other things I want but those are the ones that are being actively sought right now. One step at a time.

I'm with Morgan on one want. I love old books and would love to set up our new family room as a library of sorts. I've got a lot of good books all ready and would love to add to them a nice collection of old eclectic writings of all kinds. Floor to ceiling book cases that are actually the walls themselves stained a beautiful deep walnut, perhaps made of a maple with the wide growth bands or a true walnut, or even a knotty pine. I have the fireplace with a overly large mantel (needs re-casing but that's the easy part with this family of woodworkers). The sliding glass doors lead to a nice patio area with a canopy that will be used for sitting out there and reading during the summer, amongst some great cook outs. There is just something alluring about an old book with a hand tooled leather spine and cover, and pages that carry the weight of exquisite writing, whether it be block printed or having been hand written.

Another want is to finally get my arts off the ground as a business, but that will come in the very near future. The plans have been laid and the process is in the works. Web designing started, pictures of completed projects being collected and compiled, and office/work space setting up for future works are all in strong progress. It's just a matter of time and energy making sure they are all completed to a "T" now.

The list of wants could go on and on for material matters. A new motorcycle for myself (hopefully by mid summer), a new truck for my other half (more economical than his current beast), a few new shiny toys here and there. But those will come in time as the "work" type plans start to pan out and I know working towards the primary will readily lead to the secondary wants. Just a matter of time and staying on course.

Thanks Room 101 for sharing. Those books are great examples of the kinds of books that would be delectable to own.

Surly there are things that you desire that require a great deal of time to work toward? There are very few out there that crave a thing and have the means to simply have that desire fulfilled immediately.

No one is debating that hard work is the surest way to accomplishing ones goals, I’m pretty sure I made no mention of praying, wishing or Magic. I simply asked “what do you want”. This is simply a forum in which others can share their wants and desires for OBJECTS.

The unattainable, while being things that my peak your interest or make you hard, have no place here. As I mentioned in the thread description, this is a “positions” thread. While some of the subjects mentioned here may be hard to come across, they are very much attainable.

And yes, I concede this point, not everyone here is a Satanist.

I want to watch a movie and see in the credits “Written by William Wright.” I’ve been trying to get my scripts sold for a number of years now, but I’m still an “aspiring” screenwriter. So I guess what I want tangibly speaking is money from the sale of a script…but for me it’s about more than just money. It’s knowing that I did it, I really fucking did it.

Until then, all I can do is work to improve my craft. If what I write is hot enough, it’ll sell.

It is a never ending list.
My environment is very important to me. My surroundings (sight, smell, sound, "feel") are constantly being manipulated to be the most pleasing to me.
I either have or am working on floor to ceiling curtains, candelabras mounted on all the walls, an epic sound system (since my music means so much to me. It's practically a religion in itself.)ect. But it will never be enough. When I am done on the inside, I will complete the outside, and out as far as my might can reach for my ideal environment. But at least for now, I have my little enclosure.
