Besides its long-known cardiovascular benefits, here are even more reasons to have a glass or two of red wine a day:
(the article is a little "basic", but still informative) From Health Benefits of Red Wine by Chris Hana
1. Red wine helps prevent the possibility of various neuro-degenerative illnesses and diseases. Studies show that because of the high resveratrol content of red wine, its properties can help aging people avoid the development of diseases and illnesses common among them such as Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease.
2. Red wine is good for the heart. The specific substances in wines like tannins and flavoniods can raise the levels of good cholesterol or high-density lipoproteins (HDL) in the person's blood. Its antioxidant properties also help in the reduction of bad cholesterol or low-density lipoproteins (LDL) in the body that can prevent a person from developing various cardiovascular diseases, heart attacks, as well as strokes.
3. Red wine helps reduce the harmful effects of food poisoning. The properties in red wine can help cleanse the body from toxins. Aside from preventing food poisoning, it can also help the person to avoid varying levels of dysentery and acquiring diarrhea.
4. Red wine can cure and prevent various gum diseases. Caused by inflamed muscles in the gums and weakened tooth, gum disease is a common mouth problem to some people especially to smokers. Experts advise people who suffer from gum diseases to drink red wine because the polyphenols in it can reduce the presence of free radicals that causes the infection and bacteria proliferation inside the mouth.
5. Red wine can prevent certain cancers. Because of the wonders brought by resveratrol in red wines, experts believe that regular and moderate consumption can help fight possible cancer cells from proliferating.
6. Red wine can suspend the progression and possibility of dementia especially to the elderly.
7. Red wine can serve as blood thinners for people with high blood pressure because it contains blood pressure lowering-substances and compounds.
8. Red wine can provide healthy skin. Thousands of polyphenol can prevent the damages brought by cell oxidation process and results to healthy and young looking skin.

Miscellaneous tidbits:
"Researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham recently reported that male mice treated with resveratrol had an 87 percent reduction in the risk of developing prostate cancer compared to rodents that did not receive the nutrient." ------------------------------------------------------------ "The results of a recent study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry demonstrated that both red and white wine are effective in controlling the growth of several strains of disease-causing streptococci bacteria."
There was also an interesting article I came across a while ago, that mentioned that the phytoestrogens in red wine can actually bond with estrogen, thereby easing the symptoms of menopause in aging women. I can't find it, though, not even with Google. Oh well. I'm having a glass of Chianti...

I had no idea either, just how many benefits can be derived from a grape skin (that's where all the magic happens, and why white wines are not as "healthy" as reds--they only use the flesh of the grape in whites, and include the grapeskins in reds).
There has also been discussions pertaining to what selections of red wines have the most resveratrol. So far, the darker reds like Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are higher in resveratol than other reds, but only minimally.
By the way, I found the piece of the article describing the binding of the phytoestrogens to estrogen:
The Phytoestrogen Effect Resveratrol is also known as a phytoestrogen. In the 1940s scientists found that phytoestrogens in clover were responsible for certain infertility conditions in sheep that ate a diet exclusively of clover. They discovered that phytoestrogens have similar properties to estrogen, the female sex hormone. Due to this similarity, phytoestrogens are able to bind to estrogen receptors acting like the estrogen that is naturally produced in the body. Therefore, diets that include red wine may benefit certain conditions affected by a decrease in natural estrogen including menopause, breast cancer, osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease. Moderate amounts of red wine, such as a glass per day, may provide enough resveratrol to protect against estrogen depletion in the body.

Does anyone really 'need' a reason to drink red wine? Do naked girls from a french vila still step on wine? is that the smell i smell? or do machines crush wine these days? Sometimes capitalism and mass production takes the beauty out of things you know?

Myself, I like to go to the Total Wine and More store (there are several in my area). They have MASSIVE selections of wines grouped by country of origin--Italy, Spain, Australia, California, Local (Florida), France, etc. Some have an entire wall set aside for hundreds of vintners to select from, some with a description printed on the outside of the shelf. They also carry liquor and imported beers (sold singly or in 6-packs to cases). Not to mention glassware, cigars, and tools for the bar. It's just fabulous.
I'm not too keen on Yellow Tail. I've sampled both their Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon, and thought they tasted too acidic and cheap, like they didn't age long enough or something.
For whites I like a medium-dry Pinot Grigio, or a Riesling, and for reds, from what I've had thus far I prefer Italian Chianti over Cabernet and Merlots. I recently finished off a nice bottle of Chianti from Castello di Tavolese, and it was only $8.99. I'll be buying more of that later on in the week (don't want to interrupt my health regimen by letting my red wine intake slack off! lol). I could drink white all damn day, but they're so high in carbohydrates that after a day or two my face breaks out in terrible acne. I don't seem to get that from reds, so I'm sticking with my Chianti.

I think you're right-on about the Yellow-Tail... but I think it's a "regional" thing, rather than a "cheap-winemaking" thing. The Chardonnay does have a bit of an overdeveloped "oakiness", and tastes a bit too alcoholic (a strange complaint from me, I know). I think it's the climate, the air, the plants, the bugs, the soil. Paired with the right food, these characteristics could be actually valuable, though. Unfortunately, I haven't found it yet - maybe a spicy chicken something...
What about Black Swan?
Honestly, I think Californian wines are underrated, because no one believes that the U.S. could make good wine (or it used to be that way - there's still some wine "snobbery" going around). I myself have to admit my prejudice.
Californian, or French Chardonnay, and a good German Riesling for the whites.
Spanish Rioja, Italian Chianti (I'll check out that Tavolese, Nemesis, thanks), and a good Cabernet for the reds.
I haven't had much experience with Pino Grigio, Sauvingon Blanc, and many, many others I'm sure. I'd love suggestions on particulars.
And... what about the Cheese?
Port Salud on a Sesame "Wasa" crispbread, with a nice dry Chardonnay. - I highly recommend.
