It would be a hideous wound to have a basketball sized pocket of frozen gas injected into your abdomen. Maybe it's just me? I would like to meet the guy that thought that one up. Wonder what kind of other none-marketable weapons they've made, bet it some sick shit.

It's made for divers. It's primary use would be against shark attacks. If you are going diving solo in reefs or in wrecks, it is better to have something than nothing.
I like Nemesis's idea. A gaping hole from a .50 rifle, or even from a 45 from a few feet away, beats the knife in your hand any day.

Thank you for the info that makes a lot of sense to have under water. Still will cool on dry land.
Seems sort of gimmicky to me. For sharks use a 'bang stick' or a spear. It doesn't take much to fend off a shark attack. Sharks are top predators and are not use to being attacked. They defend themselves at all costs. Nearly any resistance will cause them to break the attack. A lot of people work this way too...

I don't see it being very effective in the heat of the moment, or in a real emergency. However I'm sure it could be used for some pretty interesting improv purposes... like being the most badass watermelon opener ever.
I'm sure the knife would also chill the watermelon perfectly. sure the melon might split open, but on a hot day there would be nothing better than biting into an icy cold watermelon... mmm, scrumptious.
I suspect that a cursory knowledge of anatomy and some skill in knifeplay might be of more benefit than this injection system. Better still - carry a 1911 A1 (after gaining proficiency).
Although I am no fan of the author, I do share Dr. Lecters' enthusiasm for the Spyderco Civilian:
A more entertaining knife would be the samurai-machine gun, upon stabbing the watermelon *ahem* the assailant strikes the hilt of the sword releasing 20 rounds of small calbre bullets from a vickers-style gun styled around the sword handle, nothing more amusing than turning a victim into a fuckin donut!
