I myself am quite partial to single malt islay whiskies. Some of my favourites are Ardberg, Lagavulin, Talisker, Laphroigh and Bruichladdich. These are quite petey, but that's just how I like it.

No ice, just straight up. With maybe a couple of drops of water.

I'm one of those that can't drink whiskey even when my life depends upon it. I don't know why and I sure tried a lot, from the cheap Walker to the more refined stuff, but after one sip, I always wonder who's cat died and got caught in the bottling process.

I can down any sort of booze but whiskey, no thanks. I'd rather drink old car oil.

I am the same with tequila. As soon as it touches the back of my throat, it's all I can do to chain-smoke and down Coke for the next 30 minutes to keep myself from ruining my shoes.

Question: Has anyone had Hypnotic? Everyone over here seems to love it, but I have yet to get my hands on it. I understand it is some mixture of vodka and wine, which really doesn't sound like a good morning, but may prove for an interesting drunk.

Hypnotic is really good, especially for martinis.

I discovered something this week that will probably make everyone laugh but here goes...

I have arthritis and this winter it was hurting like a bitch so I tried this home remedy of soaking raisins in gin and eating them. Well, it seems to be working - something about the gin being made from juniper berries which contain anti-inflammatory properties. So, after soaking all these raisins in good Tanqueray gin, I wasn't about to throw it out, so I drank a shot and it was delicious. It is sweet and dark from the raisins, so it tastes almost like a liqueur, and I am feel'in no pain!

Diavlo, I always felt that way on Karaoke night at the bar and I wasn't the one drinking! I worked there, so there was no escaping the fools that thought they were Elvis, Madonna or anybody else but themselves, after a few shots. It took me some time to get used to Crown Royal, but some times that was what I needed after a WHOLE night of those damn yowling cats.

Clicks, I've heard of Hpnotiq. It's a blend of fruit juice, vodka and cognac. At least the bottled version sold here. From what I was told, it's a good drink. I'm not sure about the mix you're refering to, with the wine and vodka. Although that does sound interesting too.

LOL Lucy, careful with the Tanqueray. It'll sneak up on ya and the next day might not be so nice. There are some great recipes for Tanqueray out there. If you like your "grape juice", check out some of the other drinks made with it. I had some customers that would insist on Tanqueray over any other gin.

I'm with Dutch on this one. Verbatim. Single malts from Islay, and, thanks to the efforts of Room101, Jura. I absolutely understand how some people can't stand the stuff, but I suspect it's about what you're used to. Drink only single malts. Don't ruin them with ice or some kind of mixer. Also, bear in mind that these are taste explosions, not swill for bilge drinking. Put in some drops of water and settle down for that peaty, smoky flavour to spread around your taste buds. Bliss.

Very interesting, actually. I've had multiple bone breaks due to skateboarding and mountain biking, and the bones get to hurting pretty bad when it's cold. So I'm wondering if that may help me also. I have no idea what causes the pain, really, so it's something to google.

Anyway, in the spirit of staying on topic, I would like to ask a question. Absinthe happens to give me my favorite drunk, however, I hate the licorice taste. Anyone know of anything I could mix with it to cut the taste? I've used Kahlua for a little while, and it gets the job done to a certain extent, but the taste of the absinthe is still painfully apparent.

I like to mix it with strong wormwood tea. Wormwood is extremely bitter which cuts the sugary taste of the Absinthe. It also increases the chance of mild visions or hallucinations so I wouldn't be operating any heavy machinery or even light machinery, for that matter. The last time I indulged in this combination I saw an electric blue tinge around everything I looked at, which is weird because I had got the same effect when I took a viagra.

And for the record, that is ALL the viagra did, proving it doesn't affect women the same as men. Either that or it couldn't make me more of a sex machine than I already am.

2 shots of Malibu
2 shots of Crown Royal
2 shots of apricot schnapps
1 shot of Bacardi 151
1 can of Red Bull

Mix all ingredients in a large glass

Apologize in advance to all those around you for your future behavior

Enjoy!

LucyFur, will try. Just as long as the licorice taste goes.

And 6, that sounds like it would take me out of my usual calm drunk. It's only one shot of Bacardi in that entire drink, but with my past experiences with it, I can only assume that someone is going to get their wallet stolen. But hey, why would he leave himself open just to piss in an alley?

Now, a simple question. Whiskey Dews: never tried it, but a few people tell me it's a very bad mixture to be sitting in your stomach. It just so happens to be that everything likes to fuck with my stomach, so I really don't want to try it if it's as harsh on the stomach as I am told. Is it true that it doesn't sit well? Also, what odd mixtures have you all found that go decently with whiskey?

In my case any strong drink is good in order To help some particular ritual. Let`s sai that you can use it as a core part of the ceremony, and after consacrate the drink you share it with theothers participants, or even with the forces you invoque. What I dont like is mixing the alcohols: beer + vodka, o wine + tequila, etc. In order not to addulterate the substance, I believe is good to keep it as clean as possible.

Wormwood is a bitter herb. It's one of the main ingredients in absinthe: in fact, 'absinthe' is the French word for 'wormwood'. It comes, ultimately from the Latin:

"Et tertius angelus tuba cecinit: et cecidit de caelo stella magna, ardens tamquam facula, et cecidit in tertiam partem fluminum, et in fontes aquarum: et nomen stellae dicitur Absinthium, et facta est tertia pars aquarum in absinthium; et multi hominum mortui sunt de aquis, quia amarae factae sunt."

"The third angel sounded his trumpet, and a great star, blazing like a torch, fell from the sky on a third of the rivers and on the springs of water--the name of the star is Wormwood. A third of the waters turned bitter, and many people died from the waters that had become bitter." (Revelations 8:10-11)

Clicks, if you find that you dislike the licorice taste in absinthe, you might want to experiment with different brands. That particular taste comes from another herb, anise, which is the main flavouring ingredient in other liqueurs such as pastis. (One of the main French producers of asinthe, Pernod, eventually switched over to producing pastis after absinthe was banned.) But now that more and more brands of absinthe are becoming available once again, you may find some that include less anise than others, and are more to your taste. Websites like the Wormwood Society include detailed user reviews that generally mention the balance of flavours in each product.

(Apologies if you already know all this)

I like absinthe myself (licorice taste and all), but my own favourite spirit is cognac: I drink the finer varieties neat, but I also enjoy mixing cheaper VS cognacs in a long drink, with lemon soda.

My favourite liqueur is green chartreuse. Chartreuse in hot chocolate is a delicious dessert drink.

Oddly enough, I've discovered some of my other favourite drinks through fiction. I first tried Whiskey Sours after reading about them in Raymond Chandler's novels, for example. I discovered Lillet after Thomas Harris mentioned it in Hannibal--it's a very good aperitif. And while I don't usually drink sherry, I had to give Amontillado a try, in honour of Edgar Allan Poe.
