Wasn't it Spike Milligan who had "I told you I was ill!" written on his tombstone?

My own?
"Nope, still no change."
or (aping Magritte)
"This is not a Tombstone."

Cremated here too! My ancestors cremated their bodies and I will too. Tombstones are ridiculous. If you want to know my last message to the world it is something like a line from the dark tower series

There are other worlds than these

As a monument installer I see more and more people getting their own personal monument before they die. A.M.A. is right it's never to early to start enjoying the after life and what better way to do that than to buy your grave and have someone put the stone of your choosing in place so you may experience what your final resting place will be.

I personally have gone with a small pyramid made out of green marble from Italy. It 3'x 3'x 3'high. It sits at the head of a black granite grave cap. I like it a lot and I am grateful that I am able to enjoy my own grave.

Nothing twisted about that.

My uncle laughed himself dumb because it's a green pyramid. It's a trip! It is always a good idea to make your stone personal because to many lives are just a hyphen. Look at the dates 1900-2001, 1885-1925, and so on and so forth. The person's whole life is summed up with a little dash "-".

It tells me nothing of whoever had lived only when they were born and when they died. However I have not chosen an inscription but that's not a problem cause you can get someone to come out to the cemetery for $50/caricature.

Enjoy your life now not after.

I don't know how people can be okay with being buried in the ground. It's so disgusting! Cremation is clean, and there are lots of creative things you can have done with your ashes.

I was thinking of having my urn covered in small print quotes such as:

(on the front)
  • The very existence of flamethrowers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, "You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but Im just not close enough to get the job done." - George Carlin
  • Give a man a fire and he's warm for the day. But set fire to him and he's warm for the rest of his life. - Terry Pratchett
  • Dying is one of the few things that can be done as easily lying down. - Woody Allen
  • He's spending a year dead for tax reasons. - Douglas Adams

(And more somberly, but still in good humour on the back)
  • If its true that our species is alone in the universe, then Id have to say that the universe aimed rather low and settled for very little. - George Carlin
  • It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things. - Terry Pratchett
  • The truth may be out there, but the lies are inside your head. - Terry Pratchett
  • There are hardly any excesses of the most crazed psychopath that cannot easily be duplicated by a normal kindly family man who just comes in to work every day and has a job to do. - Terry Pratchett

and so on.

Since I'm not imaginative to think of one for after I get the hell out of Tennessee, I'll go with one that would work for right now:

"He chased a different dream....even to the next world.

I kinda like a Metallica lyric for my stone:

"My body lies, but still I roam."

Seems like it would catch a few eyes and make them think.

I own a plot next to my maternal grandfather. It is a humbling feeling to go out there. I'll go with my sig for now. I hope after I take a dirt nap: the rains abound, the crops return, and the flood is unleashed.

I have no strong feeling on the subject.
And since I'm not there to witness it; I do not care much how my family wishes to dispose of my remains.
Funerals are for those left behind and will probably involve grief.
Let them do what they want, as long as it helps them, I say...

But; in order to join in on this friendly and light-hearted banter.

I gained a great deal of respect for you in this post. My only complaint is that you didn't pick the perfect "sunset". It was good, no question. Superlative even.

However, this:

should prove a nice counterpoint.

Nice. I can't say I'd really thought about an actual epitaph until this thread. My family seems to have developed an odd system. My grandpa was actually cremated. 1/2 in the urn underground + 1/2 spread over his favorite spot. I seem to be the only other taker for the dirt nap half lol. Will make for some good haunting.

Thank you Mr. King.

The picture in question is of my homestead, well north of the Arctic circle, and actually taken in the middle of the night.

If you are in want of the same location; with the perfect sunset?
Only to happy to oblige:

I could not bear having a serious gravestone. I love gallows humor. Anyway, my gravestone:

"Here lies a Nigerian prince forced to create gravestones. Please wire 2000 USD"
