I always thought Wikipedia was manipulated by powerful interest groups. Now I know it's true.

A veteran Wikipedia editor, known as "Zeq," who according to the emails is colluding with CAMERA, also provided advice to CAMERA volunteers on how they could disguise their agenda. In a 20 March email often in misspelled English, Zeq writes, "You don't want to be precived [sic] as a 'CAMERA' defender' on wikipedia [sic] that is for sure." One strategy to avoid that is to "edit articles at random, make friends not enemies -- we will need them later on. This is a marathon not a sprint."

Pro-Israel group's plan to rewrite history on Wikipedia

Does the fault then lie with the clandestine Pro-Israeli groups attempting to undermine our beloved Wiki? FUCK THAT. WE are to blame. Wiki is simply a website. If we in western society weren't so content with accepting Wiki as our immediate source for truth and answers, then this plan (true or not) wouldn't mean shit. It's the fact that fast, easy information is available and taken as truth by simpletons who can't be bothered to pick up some books and read. If they succeed in "rewriting history", then we have no one to blame but ourselves.

Fair enough point there, Octavius.

Wikipedia has a massive, unearned influence on what passes for reliable information. Search engines rank their pages near the top. Editing your own entry on Wikipedia has usually only been the vain province of publicity seeking celebs. But the website http://wikiscanner.virgil.gr/ interestingly exposes corporations, government agencies and political parties, including the CIA and the Vatican that have been editing entries on the site for one reason or another under the Wiki aegis of NPOV(neutral point of view).

However, this does not necessarily exonnerate Wiki's admin. from culpability in the matter of ripping-off the general public by claiming that the fake is actually the real via deliberate misinformation.

No one likes to be made to look a fool, Octavius, which is why all special interest groups hate their less than honorable activities to be exposed.

Most of the administrators at Wikipedia exercise their functions anonymously. The process itself is open, but the identities of the administrators are usually cloaked behind a username and a Gmail address. (Gmail does not show an originating IP address in the email headers, which means that you cannot geolocate the originator, or even know whether one administrator is really a different person than another administrator.)

If an admin has a political or personal agenda, he can do a fair amount of damage with the special editing tools available to him. The target of that agenda may not even find out that this is happening until it's too late. From Wikipedia, the material is then spread like a virus by search engines and other scrapers, and the damage is amplified by orders of magnitude.

There is no recourse for the "victim" of this, and no one can be held accountable. Once it's all over the web, no one has the power to put the genie back into the bottle.
