Some of my favorite shows are based on eating odd things. We have a diverse group. I'm sure one man's ick is another's pleasure. Has anyone eaten anything they consider truly odd?

My strangest eats occured while stationed in Korea. While doing some Australian rappelling training, we were given some time off. A small group decided to explore the island and see what was kicking. We happened upon a resaurant that served raw squid. I decided to show my nuts and order a plate. There was little effort in the process. The "chef" asked me to go to the tank and select my live squid. I just pointed at one. He plucked it out of the tank, slapped it on a chopping board, busted out his meat clever and diced the tentacles right up. He slid the still moving tentacles onto a plate and handed it to me with a devilish grin. As I plucked the writhing tentacles up in my chopsticks, and placed them into my mouth, I knew it was a mistake. They stuck to your throat as they were going down. They moved around in your mouth. The taste wasn't all that bad. Like an oyster, only moving, and more leathery. I managed to finish my plate, as to not be deemed a pussy.

On a drunken night out with friends, we happened across a street vendor selling meat on a stick. Being late at night, and a few sheets to the wind, we were ready to feast. We asked what it was. Kaegogi(sp). Dog meat. It had been marinated, grilled, and slathered in hoisin sauce. I, and a few others, decided to try it. We had heard the rumors that they actually served dog meat, so why pass on an opportunity to try it. It was really good. Or at least that is the memory of that night that sticks with me. The marinating, sauce, and grilling really worked well. I do remember it being sort of greasy. Kind of like eating lamb.

Next on my plate, cricket tacos. I hear there is a place about 45 minutes from here that serves tradional cricket tacos from some region down in the southern hemisphere.

This is pretty tame compared to what you've eaten. Back in '94 when I was stationed out in Ft. Hood (Yes, we always happen to eat weird stuff while in the military) and we were playing around in the woods for about a month. Our Humvee ran over a rattlesnake and my buddy from Maine said: "I bet you never ate a snake before, dude." I declined but eventually succumbed to the peer pressure when all the country boys uttered the 3 magic words: "I dare you". Hey, that's all I needed right?

The roadkill deluxe wasn't too bad. It actually tasted like chicken but the meat's texture was funny. It felt like rubber but it did taste decent. Recently, I don't think I've eaten anything too weird.

Rose petals...

I don't really believe in eccentric eating, to me food is a means and not an end in itself, I have my vices, coffee, for instance and I used to really love blue cheese, once, most likely, an odd delicacy in and of itself in the old world.

But let's see, I've had deer heart that I gutted myself, rabbit baked in shredded carrot chutney (ha!) all manner of japanese seaweeds, octopus, elk, buffalo, moose and colloidal gold, as well as my dead great grandmother's ashes...

rofl

It's a terrible story but they were being kept in the garage in an urn , I accidently tipped them over and apparently it wasn't secured so *poof* a cloud of ash went up and I'm pretty sure I inhaled at least a little...

Good chod practice, lulz...

Dont ask why, just as kids, we do strange things....

Do crayons and paste count? If so, then I have logged many a school snack with those. Paste had an odd sort of minty flavor to it. Crayons, no real flavor, but somehow I just coudln't resist having a little nibble here and there.

Yes as kids.....this is pretty disgusting and I really don't remember doing it, but as child I used to eat garden snails.

Apparantly I'd squish them up in my hands all gooey and snotty.

Ewwwwwww.....man I dry reach at the thought now. Other than that, I can't say I've been very adventurous with strange foods. I mean I've eaten the standard things, but not any exotic creatures.

When I was in Sth Korea, I did however see the dog meat for sale. We were walking through a market in Daejon, when we noticed a stall some way down with meat piled up on it with bright red flesh. We wondered down there and sure enough there were dog heads, legs, bodies etc all piled neatly on this stall.

I immediately whipped out my camera, but the little Agima got most upset and started chasing me around stopping me from taking photos. Later I found out that it is actually illegal, henceforth her not wanting to let me photograph her stall.

I also found out though, that it is only the men that eat dog, at a certain time of year for their mojo. What is it about Asian cultures and eating weird shit and saying it makes them, bigger, harder, last longer etc? And I thought I had penis envy LOL.

I must have been lucky to catch this vendor while it was the time for dog. Though I could have sworn dog was available year round. You just had to know someone. I was also lucky that ours was just "meat on stick". No cute pooch face looking up at you while you feasted on his leg. Otherwise, I do think I would have passed on that late night snack.

This has nothing to do with the thread, but you reminded me of one of the saddest sights I witnessed while stationed in Korea. Me and a small group of folks I hung out with were in a village during the day. We were exploring the markets and just hanging out. We rounded a corner on a hill and saw a man on a motorcycle, or moped as that's what they really were, taking his game to market. He had a basket stapped to the back of the moped with some chickens in it. Chained to the back of the moped was a dog. Still alive. Being drug through the streets. He was erect on all fours and his poor paws were being ground raw. There was a trail of blood and flesh going down the hill behind him. The dog was obviously in pain and distress and resisting the dragging. I was instantly struck with rage, and it was all I could do not to knock that fucker to the ground and beat him down. It was the culture after all, and I would have been in the wrong to interfere. I remember being bummed out for the rest of the day, and that memory is one I still carry with me from that stay. I will say, I ate the dog sticks prior to seeing that, and wouldn't have eaten them at the time had I seen that before.

Sadly,
I can only bring dry cat food and eel
to the parade of stomach stars...

There used to be a show called "Fear Factor" a few years ago on television...
I'm not sure if its still on
because i don't watch the box anymore...

But to the point-
They always had contestants eat the most unusual stuff.
(which was usually just boiled to kill any parasites)

examples would be...
Deer Penis, Cow Brains, Live Amazon Spiders.

But the real kicker
was most of the time
these fools would often have to eat their own puke
or just run out of time mid-chew and get disqualified.

I remember that show! I used to laugh hysterically at the things they would be made to eat. My favorite was a mixture of live maggots, cow testicles, and some other odd pasty substance [which I can only begin to guess].

Personally I used to go around eating spiders when I was a kid. I loved the way they tingled on the way down. I also used to take chunks out of the soap bar, I thought it tasted good in a weird way. My mother never threatened me with soap for swearing after I told her "Okay I love soap!".

A couple years back I went on a cruise with some friends of mine to the Bahamas. Apparently this was a luxery cruise and a variety of foods were available. Well weren't come of the oddest foreign "Delicacies" available.. My friends and I all dared each other to try the pickled eel and the boiled insides of a red snapper in some sort of salad? I'll have to admit the pickled eel wasn't so bad, kind of a tangy flavour to it, but quite chewy. The red snapper I found quite bitter and didn't find it tasteful at all. Of course knowing it was the insides of something definetly DID NOT help.

The things we try.

In different parts of Europe you find different kinds of rotten or bad food. I think this is worse then different kinds of meat. Like Italian cheese with maggots in it (they are supposed to be there) or rotten fish, birds or eggs. As a kid I went to Sweden in the summer when they had this strange fish "ritual" focused on something called a "surstroemning". This is made by canning a whole raw fish, waiting a few month, and then eating it when the fish is so rotten so the can is getting swollen. When the can is opened you have to do it under water to keep it from exploiting on you, and you have to eat the fish outside. The smell is so bad that dogs run away when they smell it. I was only a kid then so I didn't taste it. I don't know if Sweden export the stuff - I guess it would be viewed as biological terrorism if they tried...

Isn't this the same area that eats rotten shark? I forget what it is called and the country. I remember seeing it on tv twice, and both men could not stomach it or make it past the smell. Though that rotten fish in a can sounds like the most vile dish known to mankind. Burger King and beer, please.

my ol lady is icelandic and it's called Hakarl... shark thats been buried for 8 weeks, then hung up and dried for another couple months, cut and rolled into tubes, and eaten very quickly, usually with a shot of rotgut liquor.
she says it smells like strong ammonia, and claims to enjoy it. i dont believe her. it made anthony bourdain puke.

This 'worm cheese' (intentionally left with flies to lay their eggs in it) is apparently a delicacy in Sardinia, although I heard it is now illegal to produce due to local health and safety laws.
Not that it stops them though!

What turned my stomach most is not so much the fact that it contains live maggots.
It's the fact that, before it even makes it to your plate, every last morsel of the cheese has already been eaten, partly digested, excreted out, and eaten again... several times too.

Still, many Sardinians love the soft creamy texture this produces!

Having spent quite a number of years in the Navy travelling through S.E.Asia, I've eaten my fair share of interesting delicacies.Monkey, Rat, Cat, Dog, Donkey/Horse.

Back in Australia I've also eaten the usual Kangaroo, Ringed tail Possum, Snake, Lizard, Camel, Crocodile etc. There are some things I will draw the line at though, namely Bugs and Grubs.

The cheese Amina refers to is also big in the mountain regions of Spain.

We won't eat bugs but most of us will eat shrimp, and looking at them, one wonders if there's a big difference at all.

I think eating is pretty much a form of human insanity these days...I just want my caffeine, protein and antioxidants and I'm good to go.

I'm really upset today after learning some of the news coming out of the WWF and so forth on the decimation of the shark populations for shark fin soup. I hate modern East Asian culture.

Good point, although despite their name, shrimp do put forth a quite sizeable amount of flesh. I know I don't eat the shell's legs, poo tube etc anyway. Maybe that's all the difference.

Some big juicy cricket bodeis might be food for thought.

lol Wow there are some are some weird things that have been eaten.
What an amusing thread! haha
Ok, things i've eaten that are weird are,
moose heart, moose nose, moose eyeballs, moose brains.
We would put the moose on a rope and spin it over a fire basically all day.. cut out the tongue add a dash of salt, take a bite and pass it on.
My personal favorite is the intestines XD, put them on the tap like a hose and rinse out all the poop.. slice it open, soak it in vingear for a day or two and cook it up mmmmmmm.
Another thing i've eaten is a chipmunk.
My cousin and i couldn't find any grouse to shoot, and we were taught to only shoot what you are going to eat, so we gave up and shot some chipmunks! These ones were from the Yukon where there aren't many people, or much pollution. They were surprising delicious! \:\)

There's also a delicacy up there called moose potatoes, you have to be an elder to eat them, because, the belief is that the energy in them is too strong for young ones. What is it ? Well if a female deer is accidentally shot, and is pregnant. The baby inside lives off of these potato like things inside the mother >.<!!

I've also eaten all kinds of wild roots that you can dig up if you need to survive, beaver tail, rabbit, bear, fish head soup. (ewww)
Think that's it for me!!

I know, but there are more of them in certain 'outback' places than maybe they would like to have you beleive. You try telling an Australian Cattle Dog, that he just caught and ate an 'endangered' species and see how much he cares. LOL

And yes, being an Aussie I know all about he chocolate ones...

On the news this morning, there was a story about a man that got lost in the very remote area north of Kalgoolie, that survived the weekend by licking water off of rocks and eating termites.

Good on him!

Ok, now I am intrigued. Deep fried pizza and pie? Please elaborate. I am of the opinion you could deep fry a tire and it would taste good. I'm sure everyone is aware of some of the deep fried delacacies that can be found at fairs and carnivals. Such as....Twinkies, Oreos, pickles, and corn dogs. I have not seen pizza though. I love deep fried Oreos. I didn't care for the pickles.

I once had deep-fried Pepsi. Yes, Pepsi. Somehow they managed to inject the soda in a hollow ball of dough and plop it in the fryer. Didn't taste bad, didn't taste great. It was leaking through the batter into the paper cup before I even started eating it. It wasn't fizzy either.

In Scotland there aren't as many fast food chain places. There's only two McDonalds and one Burger King in a city of 200,000. Instead, we've got fry shops. They have an enormous vat of fry oil, and they keep the same oil for months. They fry everything they serve. Most popular dishes are fish and chips, and white pudding. White pudding is a sausage that's almost pure fat. It's white like fat. Yes, they batter and deep fry that fucker. Ick! They also batter and fry their hamburger patties.

They have little pies filled with steak and gravy and they deep fry those intact. The pie crust get's very crispy, and even greasier than it was before. They have little 10 inch pizzas that they fry too. The cheesy part doesn't get so crisp. In fact, it looks likle half the cheese melts and falls off into the fryer. The crust gets very crispy. It was damn tasy but my stomach wasn't too pleasesd with me 5 minutes later.

A friend of a friend, a native Scot, went overseas and was taken out for pizza. He said "what's this, I thought we were going for pizza? This hasn't been fried."

I hear that at Mall of America you can get deep fried cheesecake slices on a stick.

Tonight, one of my favorite shows "Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern", held a special Halloween viewer party. They selected viewers to attend a "feast". This was the menu, as much as I can remember.
crickets
ants
fried water beetles
fried hissing cockroaches
fried grasshoppers
fried tarantulas
raw blood
raw kidney
raw liver
roasted guinea pig

That's a contest I really don't want to win. I got the impression some of the winners were thinking the same thing.

I'm the only one who has eaten poop in here? Gross, I know. It was an accident though, but it did get swallowed. It was gross and it came back up about 10 minutes later. I was 15.

I've also eaten crickets, ants, snake, squirrel, and a potato bug. I got $50 for eating the potato bug but it wasn't worth it and I'm scared to death of those things. It tasted horrible and I puked it up after I swallowed it.

i have a mate who has also tried to eat "poop", but he can not remember why he did it

It's not that I wanted to do it. It was because me and some girl in high school were in a fight in the field. She had gotten me on the ground and well there was some poop there. Unfortunately she saw the poop to. Not only did I accidentally eat poop, I got my ass kicked that day.

4 dl blood*
4 dl milk
4 dl barley flour
1 egg
1 tbs dark syrup
½ tsp salt
dash of white pepper
dash of marjoram
butter for frying

*Bottles of blood for cooking can be found from the frozen food section of the grocery shops in Finland.

From Here

I am now totally grossed out... Just the equal amounts of blood and milk do it for me... I would imagine as a kid eating them seemed normal in his neck of the woods...

Frozen bottles of blood for cooking yum... Hell it's 2008 do they now sell flavored blood or blood infused with spices...

Now that I know blood pancakes exist, I will do my best to never find them on my plate... \:\)

Ta2zz, what you describe here, sounds very much like the "thing" that my family would make, back in the old country.

My grandmother would slice the neck of a chicken or two, and have them bleed out into a pan. Then they would add some ingredients to the thing, such as salt, pepper, and what ever, then fry it all up. It would solidify. They claimed it tasted like liver. Now, personally, I do like liver, but if someone wants something that tastes like it, I don't see why not just make liver.

Non the less, they thought it was great. But these are the same people that would eat every part of the chicken, except for the beak. Although, I've never even seen a beak left over. Makes one wonder ;\)

Oh, and yes, incase anyone has a wise crack about "who ate the feathers?," they at times used them as well to make pillows and stuff.

I guess when you were raised at a time, when fallen horses from combat were considered a delicacy and a treat, you learned not to waste to much.

The only odd thing I've eaten is a "Cannibal Sandwich". Also known as "Raw Beef". Popular here in Wisconsin. It's raw lean ground round spread onto either hard or soft rye bread then topped with salt, pepper and onions if you prefer.

Very tasty. Usually used for a holiday spread but popular during cookouts as well.

Well, eating raw beef would not seem odd to me.
i eat allot of raw meat, and have found that beef is best. pork is another good one that falls into the raw category.

i have to say, i did chance raw chicken once, and it give me the shits really bad, and it made me vomit too much..
i would call it a salmonella surprise,,not very good.

another thing i do like, and if there is any Scottish people here, they will know what i mean.I absolutely love haggis.
for those that are not familiar with it, it is a steamed pudding made of finely minced sheep heart, lungs and liver cooked inside a cleaned out sheep's stomach.

sounds allot worse that what it is,

more or less comes down to the rule of mind over matter (for those wanting to test it)

They call them cookouts for a reason. Because you are supposed to be doing some cooking . LOL.

Not that weird, but this weekend I am going to smoke a log of bologna(let the gay jokes begin) and then grill it for smoked grilled bologna sandwiches.

Out of curiosity, would these blood pancakes be served with any toppings? Like we serve ours with syrup, butter, whipped cream., etc.

I'd have to say that the weirdest thing I have ever eaten is a chocolate donut ball (those Hostes things) wrapped in a slab of Salami. I ate it out of boredom and it turned out to be pretty damn good, the few others that were adventurous to try it enjoyed them as well.

I spent 20 years in the military and made it to a lot of places around the world. I ate a lot of things. Why? I don't know. I've had:

Camel, horse, peacock, lizard, snail, monkey, dog, rat, snake, "ranger stew" (anything you can find under a rock or crawling on the ground and stick in a pot), haggis, squid, octopus and balut... look it up... google an image. No, I won't eat balut again.

Balut tastes like... balut. There's an "eggy" tasts and a pungent smell and it's crunchy if you're eating an aged version where the chick is more developed than in the early stages.

Hahaha I havent thought of Fear Factor in forever! I used to watch it every monday night when it was on. My dad and I actually sent in an application for the family episode, but we missed the deadline. I don't think i've ever eaten anything too weird though...the most exotic food ive ever eaten though was a fruit i ate in guatemala called a leecha...at least i think thats the spelling. it looks llike a multi colored nurf ball on the outside with all the tentacles and stuff, but on the inside its a fruit that has the consistincey of a thin jello...its like candy over there. its my favorite fruit now though!

The strangest thing I have eaten is canned dog food. Ol'Roy Lamb and Rice. I heated it, taste like canned stew. Not that strange, I know.

Recently a friend of mine made egg drop soup. Anyone heard of it? Basically it's Cup O' Noodles with raw egg mixed in. Looks pretty sick.

Are you kidding me? Egg drop soup. That is some of the best Asian soup ever. If you get the real stuff, not this Ramen crap, you will see. Whenever I hit an Asian place for food I always order a soup. They rock.

Egg drop soup is the shit! You should try making it if you're into that sort of thing, fake. It's ridiculously easy - basically all you need is broth and egg. You break the egg into a bowl and mix it up with a fork - then drizzle it into the hot broth. Yum! My mom always added a few green onion chunks too - mmm good.

Made with raman? Sounds awful.

I'd make sure the hens are vaccinated against Salmonella before doing that.
Food poisoning is a bitch.

Also, don't forget where the eggs come from.
Hens don't have a special hole for eggs and another for shit...

The egg cooks almost instantly in the hot soup... I myself like whipping an egg into chicken soup here and there... I find whipping the egg with a fork as you pour it into the soup makes it cook to the consistency of grated cheese...

I guess the real warning here would be to make sure your soup is hot enough to thoroughly cook the egg...

How about "Menudo" - and not the Mexican boy band...

My wife and I were Jones'n for some of this delectible treat one hungover Saturday morning - okay Late Saturday morning, and I stumbled upon this restaurant that looked like a house... okay, it was a house, that looked like a restaraunt... anyway.

I go in an order two large servings of this delicious soup/stew/traditional Mexican hangover cure from this lady that looks like my wife's grandmother. I do this in my best Spanish, and I pat myself on the back for talking coherently in any sort of language at that point...

She says something about a "pata", and I wasn't really listening, so I did my best improv and inferred "sure, go ahead, whatever, weird old lady". She ladles this shit into these ultra-large styrofoam vessels, and I am so pleased with having procured our necessary "medicine", I give my "muchas gracias", paid, and away I went.

So, "Menudo" is a sort of stew made with cow stomach as the main ingredient, combining this with hot red chili, garlic, cumin, and onion to season, and corn hominy added at the last who knows when of cooking - but it's fucking good, and it's a regular in "these here parts...".

What I wasn't listening to, was that "pata" is actually "foot", like "animal foot", and more specifically in this instance (and in all Menudo instances) "pig's foot"... which mine happened to have a healthy heaping of. Now, I know this, but it was a difficult morning, and I'm not great at "fast" Spanish, and I was really just trying to get out of that place. So I dig in to my wonderfully brilliant, liquidy red/brown experience only to notice a huge lump of flesh, which I continued to attempt to consume... when I arrived at... what I can only describe as... a knuckle.

My Spanish improved 1000%, right then and there.

But it was delicious...

I am familiar with this soup. I think it's a New Year's tradition to serve this in the Mexican community. I have a major problem with the texture of the tripe used in this meal. As a kid, I hated hominy as well. So this is very hard for me to eat. When I visit my inlaws in Texas, and this is offered, I will sip the broth and munch on some of the other ingredients used. That usually gets me in their good graces. The broth downright kicks ass. Never had it offered with feet though. That would only add to my dilemma.

When in doubt when ordering a meal from a cosina like that, I always put my wife on the phone and let her do the talking. That way I don't end up eating cow ass in a broiled pig's skull. Give me a huevos con papas burritto in red sauce, and I am happy.

Yes, ohhhh, yes.... I think it is a "rite of passage" here... and being "Half-Mexican", I think I was expected to pass the test.

I was sitting in my grandmother's kitchen - a thousand years ago... and they gave me a bowl of this wonderfully noxious concoction.... I was eating it, but I too, never did care for the texture of the "tripe"... as I'm eating this, my cousins sitting around, watching patiently, but expectantly...

"Do you like it?"

"Yeah"

"Reeeaallllyy???"

"Yes, it's good."

"Do you know what it is?"

"No, this is like corn or something, but this other stuff..."

"It's Cow-Stomach!!!!" "Aahahahahahah!!!!!!"

I think I passed the test, and now I am considered "Mexican-enough" by my cousins.

I am now truly Mexican...

I truly love the stuff, but I'll pass on the "pata" ... "gracias"

FP - come down to the real border town, I won't do you wrong, and we won't order anything weird, I promise....... unless we want to ;\)

Cocina = Kitchen. Which is pretty much where I went for this.

New Years Day... the Granddaddy of all hangovers... I think this is why it is "Traditional". It's got the protein (ugh), the liquid (hell yeah), the carbs (hominy), and the spice (red chili) to put that zing in your step... as you make your way to the bathroom...

Ah-ha! You've just cleared up a bit of a mystery for me - I've always wondered why some free-range eggs have skid marks on them!
The wierdest things I've eaten are fish eyes, a christmas beetle, and the odd spider/creepy-crawley when I was a kid. Kind of pales in comparison to dishes like Blood Pancakes, but I have strayed slightly from The norm. \:\/

This might qualify as weirdest things you have imbibed. One boring night while stationed in Korea, we decided to rip into the tequila and Night Train. We were drunk and bored and in need of something to do. We decided on playing some kind of dare game or "who's the man". It consisted of trying to outdo each other with some kind of stunt or dare. Eventually this game always ends up in a call to either the cops or emergency services and someone in the back of an ambulance. I forget what the other folks brought to the table. But I remember it got around to me. My roommate and I both chewed tobacco and kept a spit can that we would use. It had a pretty good week's worth of spit in it. So I announced that I would pass it around for everyone to add another lugie to it, and I would drink it. Well my fate was sealed. I had to drink it after announcing such a bold proclamation. The can was passed around and everyone got their chance to clean out their throats and nasal passages into it. I received the can and it was time to man up and guzzle. Which I did. I drank that shit like it was iced tea on a 100 degree day. After I drained the can, I was declared the winner. No one wanted to try to top that. I managed to get it all down and not puke it back up. I was used to swallowing my chewing tobacco anyway, so it really wasn't too bad. The Night
Train surely helped me. Good times.

Ah fuck! What can I bring to the table now after the previous 5 pages of Gourmet revulsion?

I have tried the “worm cheese” when I lived out in Spain. It was actually really nice; I would describe it as “meaty”. The textures and sensation of moving in your mouth was the hardest to get over but I strapped on a pair and chewed. They served the cheese with a desert wine??!! It was a sweet as hell, but it complimented the cheese no end, and I dare say the alcoholic content helped my nards grow to the point that I could eat my fill. Really, if you can get over you inhibitions eating something that’s still moving, then try this. It’s great.

5 years ago I was in Morocco (Marrakesh) with a friend of mine and we get to talking to a guy in a market (yes, I know, it sounds like the setup to hostage situation); food and such is the topic of choice. One things leads to another, and after my friend buying a carpet (which to this day he claim was his idea) we find our self’s lucky enough to be invited back to the families home for a meal.

This was during the time of Eid Al-Kabir (Eid Al-Adha), which marks Abraham’s sacrifice of his son Isaac to God, and is a holiday celebrated by Muslims around the world.

The food was fantastic. I mean fucking inspired. Our hosts were friendly and courteous, and handed back the wine I had brought with a smile on their faces. (I had no idea that they viewed alcohol in such a negative light. But as I say our hosts were very forgiving).

When we got back the hotel, I Googled the name of the dish we had just eaten, turns out it was balls.

I just about fell out reading your last sentence. Priceless!!

I'm not one that ventures easily into eating crawly things, or for that matter what some have ventured to eat here. Just the thought of crawlies and my stomach wrenches so hard I seriously debate hitting the bathroom. The ironic part.....if I can get past the smell of a drink or really like the smell, I'll try it. I know, I know....it's all in my head!!

I've watched many of those food shows and some of the things people try on them just doesn't do it for me, at all. Humans....the one animal that will try to eat just about anything. I think Fakepropht has taken the "cake" with his can of "spit". At least for me he has. ::stomach wrenches again at just the thought::

All in a day's work, sir. Sometimes testosterone forces us to make bad decisions.

I have learned there is a local South American restaurant that actually makes authentic cricket tacos. That is on my "to do" list. I shall post a review and perhaps a video if I make it there and sample them.

Tobacco spit isn't that bad. In fact there is a drink in South America that is made from women chewing corn and spitting it into an urn. The pulp is allowed to ferment and strained into an alcoholic beverage. I could be wrong in the spelling, but I think it is chiche. Spit + tobbaco + alcohol = YUM.

I can honestly say the weirdest thing I have eaten was a banana that came wrapped in plastic.

Just to look at how unnecessary a plastic wrapping is on a fruit that has its own natural protection from the elements.

I often look at how unnecessary and wasteful humanity is, even an ape wouldn't do something so absurd as wrap a banana in plastic.

Where I am from, there is this charming dish called "patitas a la vinagrette" it consists of boiled or steamed (I don't know) cow bones with some fat on it. I don't know what the point is, it's far from tasting good.....

I worked as a sushi chef for about 5 years. I started off as a sushi bitch. I forget the actual Japanese name for it . But I was the dude that did all the shitty prep work and cleaning. Eventually I became a real chef. Part of the initiation is they make you eat nasty shit. I had to drink/eat a cup full of saki , salmon eggs, flying fish roe, squid brains, quail eggs and sea urchin .

How awful. All that protein mixed with alcohol. Not saying I'd like to drink fish slop, but anyway, your description, in some way, reminded me of the feminine hygiene to be encountered in English bars. Whilst cunnilingus being my favourite sushi dish, I have had to refrain from putting some rather poorly prepared dishes anywhere near my mouth. Still, if one becomes hungry enough.

Ugh, eating roe was the worst experience for my tongue. Too salty, and the texture just made me want to gag. Foie gras, is also something I would not recommend, unless you enjoy having something brown and tasting of butter to coat your tongue and pallet. I swear, if I ever see that stuff again, I'll chuck it at the nearest wall.

I'm actually fond of trying things at least once, food wise anyways. There was one time I was served what looked like meatballs in a red sauce. It was really good, but I noticed that my friends were laughing so hard they couldn't breathe. Naturally, I was perplexed by their attitude, and when it came down to tell me what I had eaten, I threw it all up, and beat the living daylights out of my friends.

What I had eaten, sad to say, were a plate of Rocky Mountain Oysters. Or, commonly known as Bull Balls.

Last week a few friends and I made an impromptu trip to the coast. On our way we passed a little roadside business with signs advertising over 60 different kinds of jerky. After a little discussion we flipped a U-turn and went to check it out.

Inside was jerky Heaven and we spent about $60 on jerky: alligator, wild boar, elk, salmon, ostrich, yak, venison, antelope, buffalo and turkey.

The yak jerky was definitely the best but they were all very, very good. I plan on going back in a few months when the owner said he would crocodile and shark jerky.

WOW! I would love to try some of the jerky... mostly to be able to say you have eaten the various animals, but a buddy of mine liked to go and get random jerky(ies) from a place where he goes 'shroom hunting in the spring. two of the better ones were the "Apple/Jack" and then "Superman"... apple jack was of course apples and jack daniel's while the superman started to burn a little bit and then kept getting worse... it was amazingly hot.

Not nearly as strange sounding as some of the meat selections I've read here, but Durian Fruit. I picked it up at my local asian market. I have never eaten a fruit before that tastes like gym socks and has the consistency of tapioca with fibers running through it. The smell doesn't help when you are trying to eat it. If you ever need a stink bomb set one of these out to ripen for a day, just cracking the box open will give you hours of work getting it out of the room.

Does a handful of live harvestmen count? They have a sort of bittersweet taste to them, but you have to remember to pick the legs off first, or else they'll stick to the back of your throat.

...it's amazing what you'll eat during a camping trip.

I've tried Rocky Mountain Oysters, but I knew what they were beforehand, so it ostensibly spoiled my expectations. There are very few occasions when anyone should put balls in their mouth, unless someone's getting off in the process.

So if I get this straight the actual weirdest thing you have eaten is earwax and you found it more palatable than 10 year old cheese.

Thought hard and reread the thread and I'll be damned I'm pretty fucking boring in the foods I eat as well as fussy over food temperatures and textures. When I was younger I did the ketchup on mashed potatoes or rice thing for a few months.

Weird but good from my younger years is Cheerios or Rice Krispies with vanilla ice cream.

Ah, well, Morgan, I certainly apologize. Let Me try to phrase this in a format less likely to be frowned upon:

In response to the topic "weirdest things you have eaten" Ny own contribution is that I have eaten cow's brains. I have actually done so (eaten cow's brains) on two separate occasions. This is the weirdest thing I have eaten of which I can think.

Certainly more than a "one line post" but containing essentially the same information. Let Me add more information just in case:

I bought raw cow's brains at a local butcher shop in Pittsburgh and cooked them Myself. I did so because I just wanted to try them and so I could say that I actually had done so. (Opportunities such as this topic in this forum were foreseen.) The first time I cooked them they were actually quite tasty, though the second time not so much. I think that I didn't cook them as thoroughly as I needed to the second time.

Again, Morgan, I apologize for My unintended infraction of the etiquette rules here. I humbly beg your forgiveness and promise to try to avoid such mistakes in the future.

LMAO! Reminds me of what my mother used to tell me... I would eat anything as a child, and dog shit was one of them. The other was just worms... she said I would pull them out of the ground after a good rain and eat the worms... she said I had so much dirt in my stomach she would not be surprised if they can survive in there. And being a child, it scared the hell out of me thinking I had worms in me so I never ate another one.

Meatloaf with melted Kraft singles on top was served for dinner. They say not to bite the hand that feeds you, but if this is what you are being fed, it could actually be a good idea.

The weirdest thing I've ever eaten is actually warm English goats cheese, which was just utterly disgusting as it both smelled and tasted like vomit. Other than that, I love tørrfisk (dried fish) which for some reason tends to be seen as quite weird to people who are not familiar with it. It's really good, though. Cod's tongue is also really good, but perhaps a bit weird too.

I would however like to try the traditional Norwegian dish smalahove (sheep's head) and haggis. From what I hear, smalahove apparently tastes tastes like any other salty meat, but I think I'd be quite disgusted by the look of it.

I would have to say the weirdest thing I have ever eaten was snake and squid. Snake I would have again, it had a very interesting taste. It did not taste like chicken like I had kept hearing. I'm not sure how to really describe it.

The squid was nasty. It was one of those things I wish I had never tried. Slimy and just... unless you like sushi, I would not recommend squid.

I have eaten a food that might not be very bizarre as much as very unique to the point that it can be called weird. Its African dish pounded yam. They bake it in the shape of a ball (white), and you dip your hand in a bowl of hot water and pull a piece of the pounded yam off the ball, its almost like uncooked dough to the touch. You then dip the pounded yam into a bowl of soup- usually fish, but not always. It actually tastes very good. Its the African version of chips and salsa.

Should I say it...? Oh well, raw meat is probably among the oddest things I've eaten though I'm sure there's way weirder. It's called "tater" , this finely ground up red jelly, and its supposedly a Polish delicacy. I have it like twice a year.

Hmmm… have an experience a bit similar to the original post by Fakepropht although it involved marinated mushrooms, not squid. It was, according to my hosts in Belarus, a vodka-snack. The marinade was transparent, slightly lemony and spicy and yellowish-brownish mushrooms were swimming inside it. In the mouth, these mushrooms proved wholly resistant to chewing. They were squishy to the point of dissolving, but never did. They were lined with long, tough strings of fibers that seemed un-cuttable. The stuff grew all the time in the mouth, and upon swallowing, it fought all the way down.

I spontaneously reached for the vodka.

cat food .__.
yeah, I was watching my cat eat (the dry cat food stuff!) and it kinda looked good so I gave it a try... It was awful. I mean, how can he eat that?! But after I had washed the taste away I decided to try the wet food... which was even worse...
oh, and sometimes I eat horse food (the pellets or whatever) its kinda good... lots of vitamins and stuff..

I strongly believe in a healthy balanced diet too? So if you can whoof down all the minarals and vitamins our bodies need then, it doesn't matter how you take them in; All they need to do, is get to the stomach and your body will take care of the rest. The vitamins in the pet food has more nutrients in it then synthetich vitamins. I swallow a couple of cherry seeds and pineapple seeds once in a while to get nutrients and vitamins I normally would never get.

My brother dared me once to eat a bacon treat for dogs. It tastest like a rotten piece of rubberized dead meat, with alot of extra chemicals in the flavour. It had the texture of plastic and if some one paid me 100$ now! I still would never try dog or cat food again!; unless I was starving to death and it was my last source of food on the planet!!

Once, when I was a preteen, my friend/mentor came over for a sleepover camp-out in the backyard, and we decided to make "nature soup" out of plants growing in the backyard. We used honeysuckle, clovers, clover blossoms, dandelions, and these little sweet purple flowers. It might have turned out alright, except I put too many clovers in and made it terrible and bitter (not surprisingly, since I ruin everything I attempt to cook).

Oh, also, this isn't that strange, but I love raw oysters on the half shell (I eat them plain; no lemon or horseradish or anything). My personal record is 90 in one meal, and I'm planning to break that next month.

Fried aligator. They were selling it at a fair. It wasnt bad...tasted similar to chicken. It was on a stick in little cubes like a kabob. Ive tryed rice with octopus in it too which I was not a fan of. The little suction cup things creeped me out.

heh... honestly? the weirdest thing I've ever eaten?

Sand.

I used to eat sand. Dunno why; "pica"? Maybe... it's not as if I was malnourished or anything - I just liked the texture... I'd never consider it nowadays... taste buds change, I guess. Maybe I was just a weird kid ;\)

Grubs - they have a nutty taste.

Chocolate Covered Bumble Bees - reminded me of a Nestlé's Crunch.

Rattle Snake - Wasn't really like chicken, more like frog-legs

Frog Legs - pretty good if they're cooked right

Armadillo - Fried, it reminds me of a mix of pork/lamb

Shark - Gross, I was half-expecting it to taste like Swordfish, big disappointment. It was more fatty tasting and less like any sort of fish steak.

Squirrel - Gamey. I've had it grilled and rotisserie style. Maybe if it was boiled to tender the meat and seasoned it wouldn't take like a dish rag.

Fried Rocky Mountain Oysters - testicles. Pretty damn good, I've had Bull, Sheep and Goat.

Jellied Monkey Brains - I'm not sure what the jelly was made of, reminded me of that ASO Sauce they sell in Asian Food stores. The brains themselves were pretty good, it was the Jelly I wasn't too fond of.

Gator - It was like chicken with a strange after-taste. Wasn't really bad but the texture tricks your mind into 'Chicken' so you expect to taste it.

Ostrich - in a Burger it's not bad. Sort of reminds me of ground turkey meat. As a steak, it tastes gamey to me. Like rank beef, or bad meat.

Escargot - Snails. I favor the smaller version, the larger the snail the flavor changes. Garlic and ginger have the right flavor enhancement. It's pretty good if it's prepared and seasoned properly. The larger type it tastes like what you'd expect Snail to taste like. Gross.

Caviar - Fish eggs. I haven't tried a type I didn't like. I eat a lot of Sushi so it falls into that category for me. Some brands are better than others. I had some generic Baluga once, totally nasty.

I think that about covers it for weird food.

Octopus for me. It tasted ok, but was like chewing on rubber. It's almost impossible to break down to swallow it.

Beef nuts. They tasted like shit to me. My father tricked me into trying them.

I have tried caviar, and surprise surprise - they tasted too fishy for my taste.

I have also eaten rabbit, squirrel, and raccoon. The squirrel and rabbit were really good, but the coon had a bit too much of a gamey taste.

All kinds of birds - quail, pheasant, and dove to name a few.

I used to have a friend who worked at an animal hospital/vet and one day a poor little kitten came in w/ a broken leg. Anyway, after multiple attempts to fix the leg, it wasn't healing and so they were forced to amputate. Now, the leg was just going to be thrown in the trash, so my friend put it in a bag in the freezer and brought it home for me to eat. So I skinned it, boiled it a bit then fried it w/ some brandy and seasoning. It taste just like chicken! It really did!

Also, I once ate a moth. Don't eat a moth.

I'm going to add 'Buzz Buttons' to my list. My blog here includes some details and links to places you can buy them to have your own Taste Trip.

I've tried all sorts of edible flowers but nothing quite like this. You'll have to try it yourself to get the full experience. It makes your mouth buzz then neutralizes the Miracle Berry tablets I took beforehand (these alter the taste of sweet & sour foods).

Totally weird!

Living in TX now, I can add tripas(kinda like Chitlins), lengua(tongue), and menudo(intestine, hominy soup). I refuse to eat the sweetbreads, grilled guts, brains, eyes etc.

I endorse everything in your list, including the parts you won't eat. I promise that sweetbreads and brains are way better than they sound. Eyes can go either way. Lengua tacos are fucking amazing though. That's one of the things about moving to Colorado that I'm most looking forward to.

Your first post after vanishing off the map for 6 years is about THIS? LOL.

Glad to see the rumours of your death were vastly overstated. \:\)

Some fungus called, "chicken of the forest." It grows on the trees up north here. They are considered to be a delicacy. It was good fried with a little salt.

Hey, I'm just sticking my toe in the water. Still trying to catch up and remember folks. Now if you don't mind, I'm off to finish my pig penis taco.

The weirdest (to me) thing I've eaten so far would have to be a live beetle (while intoxicated, and in a state of substance-induced hypomania lol). I'm not sure what kind it was, but it was BIG, haha, and it bit back.

The weirdest (again, to me) things I'd like to try eating would have to be human flesh (no, NOT Dahmer style), live monkey brains, live baby octopi/us/whatev., and that fish.. um, fugu is it? That poisonous/potentially fatal if not prepared *just right* puffer fish.

I'd love to be a filthy rich, eccentric, weirdO someday. \:\)

I've eaten Kangaroo and Wallaby but I would probably call that more unusual than weird. And when I was a cook on a cattle property I would crumb and cook buckets of calf testicles during marking season. They are actually really yummy!

I have a pretty adventurous pallet and will pretty much try everything, including the local cuisine in foreign countries that they warn you could make you sick. I figure if the locals eat it then it is okay...

Funnily enough, the one thing that I cannot stomach is straight milk! It makes me dry-reach and I can only have it with flavour or on cereal or in stuff. When I was younger I tried on many occasions to conquer this aversion but it is just disgusting!

I've eaten a rattlesnake, many alligators and octopus as well.

Once, on a dare (and I was drunk) I ate a june bug and a spider.

Oh, that reminds me, I've also eaten crickets. My son had a bag of them with some kind of Dorito like seasoning on them that he got from the Asian grocery store.

My parents went to Peru and picked out the guinea pigs that they were going to eat for dinner. There were just a shit-load of guinea pigs running around the restaurant. It was like with lobsters except with fur and squeaking.

I wonder if a boiled guinea pig screams?

While in the army, we use to make coffee with mountain dew we nicknamed it jet fuel. I find that the strangest. In ranger, training ate a lot of strange things. Nothing stranger than others listed.
