NEW YORK (AP) -- An ex-convict went on trial Thursday on charges of raping, torturing and burning a Columbia University graduate student in a 19-hour attack during which her eyelids were slit and she was forced to take so many painkillers that her liver failed.

Robert Williams, 31, sat with chained arms and legs, his head lowered, as the prosecutor delivered an opening statement that left several people in the courtroom weeping.

Williams turned the victim's small one-bedroom apartment into "his torture chamber" and violated the 23-year-old woman "in every way imaginable and in some ways unimaginable," Assistant District Attorney Ann Prunty told the jury.

Prunty said Williams stopped the torture only after the victim _ who at one point during the ordeal tried to kill herself _ blacked out from hours of pain caused by knife wounds, boiling water, battering and sexual assaults.

"Then he could no longer feel power over another human being," Prunty said.

Williams is charged with kidnapping, arson, burglary and sexual assault. He faces life in prison if convicted.

The defendant's lawyer, Arnold Levine, tried but failed to have Williams declared mentally unfit for trial. Levine did not make an opening statement.

The victim, a Columbia University journalism graduate student, found Williams in her building's elevator in the Hamilton Heights neighborhood of Upper Manhattan when she came home around 9:30 p.m. on April 13, 2007, Prunty said. She said he followed her to her fifth-floor apartment and attacked her.

During the brutal ordeal, Prunty told jurors, Williams raped the victim, poured boiling water over her, hurled a pot of bleach in her face, ordered her to gouge out her own eyes with a pair of scissors, sealed her lips shut with glue and duct tape and slit her eyelids with a butcher's knife.

After one assault, he forced the woman to swallow a fistful of pills from her medicine cabinet and wash them down with four beers, Prunty said.

Doctors later said the woman's liver had failed, probably because of the medicine, and that a liver transplant might be necessary. Fortunately, the transplant was not needed, Prunty said.

The woman at one point tried to plunge a pair of scissors into her own neck in a bid to commit suicide.

After about 19 hours, Prunty said, Williams tied the naked, unconscious woman to a futon with computer cables and set it on fire. The woman awoke and smelled smoke, broke free and made her way to the hallway, where she was rescued.

Prunty said Williams' DNA was found on the victim and her clothing, and her DNA was found on his clothing. Security cameras captured him trying to withdraw money with the woman's ATM card, she said.

During the time she was conscious, Prunty said, the victim studied Williams closely. Prunty said every scar and feature she later described to police matched the appearance of the defendant.

Why haven't I heard of this in the news before? I think this could also go into the "Definition of Sanity" thread elsewhere on here. Honestly, this guy should be fried, or pumped full of poison, not sitting in jail for life (probably with a chance of parole) soaking up our tax dollars. Goddamn liberal NY!

I live in nyc, I knew about this, its just so horrid that you dont want to think about it.
As a single woman, there is always the possiblility that something bad could happen.
This is the very bad thing.

It wont matter if he lives or dies, no matter what happens to him, it will never equal the damage that he inflicted on her.

I can't believe she actually survived this. As I was reading the story, I thought she'd been found dead or something, right up until the end where it said she made her way out into the hall and escaped. Goddamn, that girl's got a hell of a will to live. Hopefully she's got the strength to deal with the aftermath that will haunt her for years to come.

If something unimaginable like that happened to me, I could only hope I'd be as tough as she was. Hopefully I'll never have to find out. Fuck.

There is a very disturbing movie you might want to take a look at. It is mostly factual, though I think they omit some important facts, and sugar coat a bit of the harsher ones. The movie is _An American Crime_. You may have to do some searching to find this one. It is a 2007 release, but you probably won't find it airing on Showtime any time soon. It is based on an Indiana case of child abuse in the 1960s. The movie does not do full justice to the torture this child endured for a long 4 month period. I know of other cases more extreme, more hideous, and just as heinous as this case you posted. The names escape me at the moment. Sadly, these types of crimes are not one in a million, but a bit more frequent.

 Quote:
A Young, Tortured Girl is Dead
On October 26, 1965, Indianapolis police answered a call saying that a girl had died. The call came from a pay telephone in front of a Shell station in a poor section of the city. The caller was a teenaged boy whose voice had not finished changing into that of an adult man. He sounded very nervous and directed the police to the address, 3850 East New York Street, at which they would find the dead female.

When the cops got to the dingy, rundown, clapboard home to which the anonymous caller had directed them, they found the emaciated dead body of 16-year-old Sylvia Marie Likens. She was covered with bruises and small wounds, later revealed to be cigarette and match burns that numbered over 100. There were also large areas where the outer layer of skin had peeled off. Likens also had a large letter "3" branded on her chest. However, the most remarkable injuries, by far, were the words in block letters that had been burned directly onto her stomach: "I'M A PROSTITUTE AND PROUD OF IT!"

Room where Sylvia's body was found.

Thus ended one of the most horrible crimes ever committed against a single victim.

The crime had been perpetrated by an informal group of teenagers and children, some as young as 11 and 12, led by a 37-year-old woman. That woman's name was Gertrude Baniszewski (pronounced "Ban-i-SHEF-ski" rather than the more fittingly ominously sounding way it looks like it should be said: "Ban-i-ZOO-ski"). Sylvia and her younger sister, the 15-year-old disabled Jenny Fay Likens (she had a limp due to polio and a brace around that leg) had been boarding with Baniszewski since early July.

You can read the full, though long story at Crime Library

I think any form of justice in cases like this is unsatisfactory for the people involved: the victim and her loved ones.
If it were one of mine I’d have to do it with my own hands to feel any sort of justice had been served. Torture by proxy just wouldn’t cut it. I'm not a fan of the death penalty but I'm a huge fan of personal revenge.
I remember watching the film ‘Lady Vengeance’ some time ago and thinking that’s the way I’d do it. Get the fucker in a room, tied up, and give all the family and friends (and victim if they were able) a go at him in whatever manner they see fit.

People do horrible things to children, and other adults. Esp if they think no one cares, or that they can get away with it.

There have been some horrible case of this in nyc, where people know what is going on and just do nothing.
One girl was kidnapped, burned, beaten, raped repeatedly, and passed along to whomever visited the house before she was killed and left stuffed in a rug in a lot.

Then what happened to Nixaminaya. (I know I fucked up on her name).

Honestly, some stuff is just bad, there are lots more of fucked up stories from nyc, but I really dont want to think about it anymore today.....

I have quite a few thoughts on this subject and the state of a society that allows this to happen. I am not really of a mind right now create a well thought out essay but I do feel the need to respond here. So, in no particular order my thought on this:

This is horrible, but it is the inevitable consequence of living a white light society of complacent sheep. If you drop an egg on the floor it will break. If you let a fox loose in the hen house you will lose some hens. Is a human predator any different?

Does the victim and their family believe in gun control? Do they believe in the death penalty? Just playing the numbers, like most college students they believe in the left liberal white light secular humanist nonsense that allows human predators to fuck up the world at will.

Why does the vast body of human sheep concern themselves with protecting the 'rights' of this sort of human trash?

Most people walk around in what is called the 'white zone' - totally unaware of potential threats around them. Predators are very sensitive to this. It is like blood in the water for a shark.

If someone attacks you, shouldn't you have the right to kill them? No legalisms, no rules of evidence, just drop them dead.

Will the victims parents 'hire' someone to kill this guy in prison. I would. Is this wrong?

There are several things you can do prevent a thing like this from happening to you. Be aware of your surroundings. Do not look like a victim. Be resolved in your mind to fight to death before you even get into a confrontation. When attacked, fight like your life depends on it - because it does! NEVER go anywhere with your attacker - fight him in the open right were you are. Attack the eyes. Action beats reaction - always attack whenever you get the opportunity.

I find this truly horrifying.. If this had been done to a member of my close-ones, I would most likely go insane, find this man, and destroy him. I have been saying since I was at the age of 12, people who commit these type of things, SHOULD be destroyed. The victim and there family should be given the right to attack them with all of there force, stick them in the ass, give them knife wounds, make them feel everything they've done to their victim[s].
Inhumaine...

I see your point, there cannot be done more damage to one person than commiting theese crimes. Rapist and other sexcrimminals should have death-penalty!

I dont look at him like a predator. To do the things he did, I think he went beyond a predatory state, into a psycho state.
I dont think he was right in the head, but he was right enough in his head to try to blind her, and get rid of the evidence.

It was a black on black crime, in a bad neighborhood, if I remember correctly.

Sometimes, even knowing what to do, and how to defend yourself wont stop an attack. He was over a foot taller than her, and had over 80 pounds on her. There really wasn't much she could do. She pretended to be blinded so she could remember ever feature on him, and she tried to survive. Sometimes, surviving an attack is all that you can do.

What a sick bastard. Killing him would be too good for him (at least in my opinion). I read somewhere that most sex offenders do not live long in prison or they have to be housed in a protective custody area because other inmates will kill them. I say, "Let them kill him" or at least after they torture him for 19 hours.
What is it that makes a person want to do these things to other human beings? How can they do these things?

One thing struck me as really odd in this case. The story states, that the attacker followed her from the elevator to her apartment. Most people, especially women, living in New York City, would have had alarms going off in all directions, if a stranger that they have not seen before, got off their floor, and was heading in the same direction as they are. At the very least, most would have stayed in the hallway, until the stranger went into the apartment where they were going.
This is not a judgement call, just something that caught my attention.

It was late, she was young and tired.
She got overpowered, then shit happened.
What she endured is beyond belief.
Her will to survive is incredible.
She pretended to be blind after some stuff he did to her so he wouldnt cut out her eye, just cut her eyelids.
He's getting locked up for a long ass time.
I wish her much luck.

I hope that piece of shit goes into the "general population," and they find out what he did. Probably would join Dalmer on the express ride to wormsville.

This kind of shit makes me f*&^%$# sick. I can't believe anyone has the tenacity to do something this horrendous to another human being, that did absolutely nothing to them in the first place.
This guy should be tied to a street pole and publicly flogged until he loses consciousness. Then he needs to be sent to prison to be raped buy the largest man there, and just as his wounds from the previous flogging are about to heal, he should be flogged again. This is to be repeated until the day that he is to serve his death sentence. Which of course should be something akin to being drawn and quartered. All of it televised.
Even that does not do the poor victim justice, but it will make many think twice before attempting such a heinous and unprovoked attack.
I think cruel and unusual punishment should not extend to those who are willing to rape, torture, or maim another individual regardless of sanity. They do not deserve to infect this planet.
